Again, these books are hard work. I think they are worth it, but I would not have been able to enjoy them as a teen. I think I read them in my late 20's early 30's.
Are they something like The Silmarillion? Because I love The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but I could never make it through The Silmarillion. Well, I only tried the one time, but I've never felt the need to go back and finish it.
