Jen (giantrubberduckydoom) | 15 comments So I got my HD tablet, but it had dead pixels so I took it to my local B&N Store. The Specialist said BN will no longer make tablets or update the ones that are out. BN will sell tablets, but it wont be nook. Basically they will sell other companies tablets that can download the nook app.

I asked him about the other ereaders (non tablets) he had a horrible poker face and said that he can not guarantee that they will be continued or updated. That the company is keeping a tight lip and it really depends on how the company goes. It is not looking good for BN ereaders. So I just returned the tablet. I REALLY hate Amazon, but with BN in the wind and the stability of the Kindle.... I just don't know.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I have not heard that Jenna, I really hope that is not the case I really love reading on my Nook HD and can't imagine B&N getting rid of them after the success they have had with them.

I like you am not a huge fan of Amazon, I will say that I have downloaded the kindle app and do load free ebooks on my tablet, but I would really be sad if we no longer had the Nook.

Veronica (veraj121) | 167 comments I did hear this earlier this year. There was talk of B&N going out of the ereader business. There was also talk of Microsoft buying out the Nooks. If this is true, it may effective as of 2014. I heard this on the one of the news channel. I also attached a link from tech bits...

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments There are a few other threads on this group. I have been doing a lot of reading and have a pretty good view of what's happening.

B&N got to a point where it became too expensive to own a company to manufacture the readers so the next generation will be made by some other company in partnership with B&N.

My daughter has a Google Nexus 7 but it's made by ASUS which is a major tablet manufacturer, not by Google. I think that's what B&N will do too.

They are realizing they are in the business of selling books or ebooks, not computers. Microsoft owns shares of B&N (something like $300 million) but will not buy them out as was previously rumored.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I am fine with whatever they need to do to stay in business, it saddens me to see and hear about bookstores closing, if getting a 3rd party for the Nook, then I am good with it.

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments I would hate to have to buy everything online. I love to browse a real book store.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments Me too Christopher, I spend hours in the bookstore!!

I also love reading my Nook in the bookstore.

message 9: by Jen (new)

Jen (giantrubberduckydoom) | 15 comments I wish I had a bookstore close to me. B&N is a 40 minute drive away :( Closest thing to a bookstore I have is Target.

message 10: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments There are 2 in north Austin. The biggest one in an upscale shopping center called the Arboretum is sometimes packed with people. The first time I got my nook I went there on a Friday afternoon and bought some coffee intending to sit down and read with the wireless. I walked all over the store trying to find a place to sit down and couldn't find one!

The wireless thing really draws people and they love the comfort of reading and drinking coffee in a book store.

message 11: by michelle+8 (new)

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) Being able to buy books without going to the bookstore was the biggest reason that I got a Nook. I'm a SAHM in a one-car family, so I have a lot more time for reading than I do for going to the bookstore. As a result, after I got a Nook I went from reading about 5 books a year to 50.

But, I really don't want to switch to a Kindle because I have more than 100 books on my Nook that I haven't read yet. I'm happy with my Nook, and have absolutely no reason to want to switch to something different. I guess if B&N lets some other company take over production of the Nook, I just hope it will still be around and not too much changed.

I much prefer Barnes and Noble to Amazon. For Nook owners I'm sure you can still buy books and I don't see a point to purchasing something different if you have Nook. For new ereader purchases is what I wonder about.

From what the clerk told me Barnes and Noble will not be making tablets anymore. They will most likely outsource with Microsoft making a tablet that is Nook compatible and has B&N's seal of approval/promotion. It will not be a Nook tablet anymore.

As for the Simple Touch and the Simple Touch Glowlight. The clerk said he could not guarantee or confirm that B&N will continue with their ereaders. Although when he said this his face looked like I know something, but I'm not aloud to say anything. That is my interpretation.

Should B&N not continue with the ereaders, ebooks should still be available -unless the company takes a drastic turn- but as far as Nook software updates, new features, and new nook models... that would probably not continue.

If this is the case I am not sure it is wise to purchase a nook as a new ereader.

I REALLY hope this isn't the case though. I am waiting to see what happens with B&N before I purchase though.

message 13: by Michele (new)

Michele | 1 comments Same here I love my Nook. Before buying we looked at Kindle and the Nook compared and decided on the Nook. If I didn't get a Nook I would hardly read.

message 14: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments I would still recommend them. If you already have a smart phone or tablet the new features may not be that interesting to you but if you don't it's a great introduction to the android/google world and you still have the nook reader.

When they sell all of the existing nooks they will still be great machines. Eventually somebody else will make them and your nook HD will be the 'old' model and you might want to upgrade. I plan on using this one for a long time. My wife still loves her nook color, has no interest in a new one.

message 15: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I would recommend them as well, if B&N plans to put their name on the Nook, or whatever the device will be called, I'm sure that it will be a good product.

I would just hate to see that people are settling for the Kindle because they don't know about other devices, I will continue to support the Nook.

Thank you for this. What I heard months ago is not too much different from what the clerk told you. I will definitely support the Nook, B&N. But for now I will stick with the Nook Color and the IPad.

message 18: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 167 comments The only thing that the Kindle have over Nook is the international access for the ebooks. The Kindle is used in different countries. Nooks are only able to access books nationally.

message 19: by Christopher (last edited Jun 30, 2013 03:58PM) (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments You can always access your nook books over the web too.

https://mynook.barnesandnoble.com/ind...

They did away with the PC apps in favor of the web reader. It's easier to maintain and you can get to it from anywhere.

Book stores have always been my getaway places. A fun site for book store fans (note this is NOT a porn site, despite the title! it's all about bookshelves, libraries and book stores):

message 20: by Jen (new)

Jen (giantrubberduckydoom) | 15 comments Well I decided on a Nook HD+ 16g. I figure I might as well buy the more advanced software since there probably won't be update on the nook tablets.

I decided to stick with B&N because I really do love B&N and want to support bookstores. Amazon may be intragrated with goodreads and have stability, but it isn't a company I want to support. Charging $20 extra to remove advertisements and then charging another $20 for a "wall adapter" so I can charge my device by plugging it into a wall... REALLY?! There are other practices that irritate me about Amazon, but it really boiled down to supporting a bookstore. There has been a depressing decrease in bookstores that I have noticed and I would hate for B&N to follow suite. So in the words of Delrea I will support B&N to the bitter end.

Well, my thought was that eventually my Nook will have to be replaced, and at that point I hope I don't have to switch to a Kindle. If Nooks are still available then, I'd rather stick with them.

Jenna wrote: "Charging $20 extra to remove advertisements and then charging another $20 for a "wall adapter" so I can charge my device by plugging it into a wall... REALLY?!"

I didn't know about the extra charge to remove ads -- I only heard about that today. That is INSANE, and another good reason why I have absolutely no interest in having a Kindle.

message 23: by TheThirdLie (new)

TheThirdLie The ads are only on the lock screen... how much time do you spend on that, honestly? Is it enough time to scoff at saving $15 on the device?

message 24: by Jen (new)

Jen (giantrubberduckydoom) | 15 comments Q7XR2 wrote: "The ads are only on the lock screen... how much time do you spend on that, honestly? Is it enough time to scoff at saving $15 on the device?"

It's the principle of the thing. It is more like watching television then reading a book where you are subjected to advertisement that you don't necessarily want or need. It is that you have to pay extra to remove ads especially when the ad version is the same cost as a nook that does not come with ads.

message 25: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (mattsmama) | 77 comments Yep, it's enough to scoff at. When I purchase something, I don't expect ads.

message 26: by TheThirdLie (new)

TheThirdLie You should always expect ads these days. Open your browser, go to a store, open mail, drive down the highway... ads everywhere. Glancing at one for the two seconds it takes to unlock abdevice is nothing is compared to the onslaught of ads you can see every day.

I'm just saying if I were deciding between the two devices I wouldn't make such a fuss over the ads.

message 27: by Jen (new)

Jen (giantrubberduckydoom) | 15 comments Amazon says it displays it on the screen saver and on the bottom of the home screen. I get bombarded with advertisements all day long which is precisely why I don't want them on my ereader. I love getting lost in a book. It is a getaway from everything else. So to me ads are a big deal. When I to my library or to read a book I don't want to see ads for Claritin or toilet paper. I am not interested in watching the latest blockbuster. People love reading for all different reasons, but for people like me forcing me to pay more to be ad free is just insulting. Different strokes for different folks :)

message 28: by TheThirdLie (new)

TheThirdLie There was an update that gets rid of the book suggestions at the bottom of the home screen.

Different strokes is right. I just enjoy the Kindle and like to try gettingbpeople to hate it less. I enjoy both readers really, started with the Nook.

message 29: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments You can run the kindle app on the nook HD if you have some of their books and the books will be saved to your SD card (if you have one) so they won't use up B&N space. That may be useful if you want to buy books with a lot of pictures that use up disk space.

I don't mind amazon owning goodreads. It was a family owned site before they bought it and they may bring a lot more to it. It's a really nice site and I've really enjoyed these forums.

In defense of Jenna, its more than just the ads (even though the Nook has no ads, comes with a wall charger and is less expensive. I don't know. I think I would prefer the Nook. Or maybe its just me). She is mainly talking about supporting bookstores such as B&N. I myself rather go to a bookstore when purchasing paper books. If we keep ordering online, we may no longer have the option to physically shop at a bookstore.

message 32: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments I agree. We need to support the book store by buying real books too.

message 33: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments Hear Hear!!! You must go to your local B&N or any other local bookstore that you have in your area, we can't let them all die, I would be lost without having the opportunity to shop in a bookstore.

message 34: by Nina (new)

Nina (marshnina) | 60 comments Ya know I agree that we should support the bookstores. I however never seem to find the time to actually go anywhere to shop. I work 10 plus hours a day and at the end of the day I want to sit down and relax and get off my poor aching feet.

message 35: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments One of our stores is near the mall. If I have to go to the mall (kids) I usually manage to make a trip to B&N as well. Our other B&N is close to work and I make it over there at lunch sometimes. I may only have 30 minutes there but it's worth the trip, great escape.

message 36: by Christopher (last edited Jul 04, 2013 12:23PM) (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) | 135 comments Some more thoughts for those who are still thinking about buying the nook HD... you really do get a lot for the money. B&N made this incredible machine to keep up with their competitors and then added google play (a really desperate and expensive move) and then had to slash the price because they couldn't afford to keep making the machines. They are almost giving them away!

I try to buy things when they have been out for a while. I have a 3D HDTV that cost less than $400. If I had bought one when that technology was new it would have cost three times that. This is a good time to buy. The next generation of nooks may have more features but may be more expensive.

The Nook Touch no longer comes with a wall adapter. I was pretty irked when I bought one for my stepmom and discovered that.

I still have the ads at the bottom of the screen on my kindle -- I'll have to see if I can figure out how to kill those.

message 38: by Jen (new)

Jen (giantrubberduckydoom) | 15 comments Maybe you got a defective one. I bought a friend a nook simple touch and it came with the wall charger.

if you want to remove ads on an ad kindle you have to pay amazon to remove ads

Yeah, that seems to be the case. There's nothing on the site about an update regarding the home page ads. I was actually kind of pleased when I won the special offers kindle because they used to have GOOD special offers. Now it's all just ads.

The Nook definitely wasn't supposed to come with an adapter, we checked thoroughly. Perhaps you were lucky and got one from before they changed it.

Seems I was mislead by a couple reviews of the product. My apologies.

Deb (runnergirl77) | 6 comments I'm not sure about B&N dropping their Nook eReaders. After all, they are continuing to come through with new Nook accessories, like the Wireless Speaker, which was approved by the FCC just this last March. Why would a company continue with production, introducing the Nook speaker just a month ago, when they plan on withdrawing from the market?

I am confused by this. I have the Nook Color and the Simple Touch Glow. Both of them came with a wall charger adapter and a USB charger - all in one. So you are saying this is no longer? I know they dont sell it separately. But buying with the device, this has been discontinued?

message 43: by Jen (new)

Jen (giantrubberduckydoom) | 15 comments I dont know. I just bought a simole touch and hd + tablet and both came with cable and wall chargers.

This is what it says at B&N: Charge via USB to a computer (Charging time: approximately 3 1/2 hours from computer) or from a wall outlet using a power adapter (sold separately)

The adapter is included for the Glow Touch.

Deb (runnergirl77) | 6 comments This thread is, on the whole, speculation. I have a source within B&N who says that the Nook is NOT going away. What will be changing is who makes the Nook. B&N currently manufacture the device; they are looking to outsource the manufacture to a tech hardware/software company to produce it with the Nook label. This is not unlike Asus manufacturing the Google Nexus, or HP manufacturing under the Compaq label. The brick and mortar locations will still sell the new Nooks, as well as provide customer assistance.

It makes sense, as they are a RETAIL business. They don't print books either, but they do have a printing company print their classics with a BN label....

Since I have the Nook Color and Nook Simple Touch, I've decided not to get the HD+. These devices I mainly use for reading only. My Ipad I use for reading also. But I use it for work, school, and all of personal functions.
