Kelley I am hesitant to get involved with Hicks's series because even though none of the reviews have accused the works of misogyny, the whole set-up feels a bit anti-female to me, what with the villains being all female and the most important "good guy" characters being male.

So, someone who has read this and the earlier (later) series, tell me: does this series give off the tincture of misogyny?

Jon Messenger My experience with the series was exactly the opposite. When you get into the series, it starts off by showing the all-female warrior race as the bad guys, but it doesn't take long for you to delve deeply into their culture and realize that they might not be the bad guys after all. You come to love and respect the aliens with some taking on the role of co-main characters.

I really recommend this series. It's really well written and does a great balance between the two waring factions.

Pretty much the alien society is maternal. Nothing in it should offend anyone; even vastly different religious views seem reconciled at the end. Remember, it is fantasy, fiction, and meant to be enjoyed: it is not a pattern to live by!

Mostly you will find the aliens very different from any you have read about before.

In a strict sense, yes, human women do fight. But the books really focus on the aliens, not the humans. That is the uniqueness of the series.

Denise This series is about the fight from the human perspective. Very little is known about the aliens, their motivations, or anything! It follows one ensign from contact to about ten years, but yes there are women who fight. There are women who kick butt, and make huge sacrifices to protect their comrades in arms. this series follows battles and political struggles. the next set - In her name - Gives a prospective from the aliens side and explains motivations. The main character in both sets is male but there is no disregarding that this a female alien race that can wipe out the universe but they do have purpose.

Guess I was lumping them all together. Good point.
