Okay so I bought my 1st Kindle Keyboard 3G + Wi-Fi November 2010 and my Paperwhite October 2012. I try to alternate between the two to extend both lifespan of each product. I notice that I was using my Paperwhite a lot because when I closed my case the light didn't go off and when I tried to select a book from the cloud it would not download so I rebooted and it seems okay. Thus I switched back to the KK which at this time has lines going across the screen (I think because I my PW resting on top of it and it affected the screen.) So, I am reading using the KK and I now notice that the screen saver does not appear if I leave it for over the amount of time. The screen goes blank but it must be still on because within three days I have had to recharge the battery. All this to say I think I might need to buy another Kindle. I am just wondering if I brought a iPad if the life span would be longer. I was against the iPad because it cost more and I would only need it for reading (I already have an itouch) and I'll have to buy the itunes cards to use it where as Amazon is flexible to International/overseas customers. So, I would like to know what you all think??

I still have my Kindle Keyboard, too (3G + WiFi, bought October 2010). Nothing wrong with it, yet.I use it 2-3 hours each day.
When it gives up the ghost, I would probably buy another Kindle. Definitely not a tablet for reading.
My Kindle went blank also a couple of times, even when it was new. I sweated a lot trying to turn it on but it was impossible. Finally, after maybe a day, it was OK.I am fond of my Kindle even if it is the cheapest one, so I don't think I will buy a "better one" in a near future.
I got the kindle fire and then my mom bumped it off my lap and the screen broke. I got a kindle fire HD after that. I had the fire for about two years.

I have had the same type of Kindle for just a bit longer. I bought the leather cover with the "hooks" that slide into the side of the Kindle and the Kindle itself powers a really great light that slides up and out of the upper right corner of the cover.
Reading at home at night I obviously have lights on, but sitting in a theatre waiting for the previews to start, it's great light and easy on the eyes.
Since they are no longer made any more, i.e., AMZ decided to "improve" what wasn't broke by creating the paperwhite, which apparently has a backlit screen (I've never seen one in real life). The "improvement" reduced available memory for books by about 2/3 if I recall correctly.
So when my works-just-fine "old" Kindle goes to electronic heaven I'll probably have to replace it with a 3G paperwhite. Definitely not a tablet or even a "fire" as I have no reason to lug all that weight around just to read.
My USD .02.

And the PaperWhite is a FRONT-lit screen, not BACK-lit. Which is what makes it so different.
I love the PaperWhite. But I don't think I've ever had more than 2 dozen books on it at the same time. The Cloud is fine for me.
My timeline:
2011-01 - Bought first Kindle
2011-10 - My mom finds out she can read library books on Kindle. I basically lose my Kindle.
2011-12 - Bought Kindle Fire, to replace my lost reader and add some capability.
2012-01 - Bought smallest/lightest Kindle, since I find the Kindle Fire is too big and bulky for regular reading
2012-12 - Bought PaperWhite, so I wouldn't have to constantly adjust a light source. I LOVE it!
Thanks all for your responses. This could be a stupid questions....but some have said they won't get a tablet when their kindle breaks down, when you say tablet are you reffering to the IPad? I want a kk again but they only have used ones for sale and I need a kindle that has the 3g componet so I guess I'll buy another PW eventuallly and store my books on my computer. I know they are saved in cloud through Amazon but I don't trust that they will always have space and room for everyone plus I just like the idea that I have it.
I read for more than 4 hours most days depending on how I like the book.
My original kindle from 2008 still works but I don't use it often; I upgraded to a k2 in 2010 and a paper white last year
> I know they are saved in cloud through Amazon but I don't trust that they will always have space and room for everyone plus I just like the idea that I have it.I would recommend checking out Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/. I don't trust Amazon to give me permanent ownership of the books I buy from them, so I manage my ebook collection through it. My calibre is backed up in numerous places (some on the cloud), so at least I know that my books aren't going anywhere.

Actually, I think it's even simpler than that. While Calibre is great for managing your library of ebooks, I only recently heard of it and downloaded. Prior to that I simply hooked my Kindle up to my computer with a USB cable within fairly short order of getting new books and copied them to a folder called KindleAll.
All 1600 of my ebooks are safely there, and so far as I know AMZ isn't storing them in the cloud because I never requested it. Once they're on your computer you need not worry, well except for the obvious about backups, and crashes, and stuff oh my.
You can also download your books directly from AMZ to your computer I think.
Just a thought.
Eric
If you can download your books to your computer, another place to 'store' them would be DropBox. That way you would have access on your computer (any computer). I enjoy the DropBox because I have on occasion gotten books on other sites that are .mobi files. I use it because I do have a KK (circa 2010) and I have recently started reading on an iPad. I do enjoy the iPad. Have gotten my sons to start reading Kindle books on their Nexus 7.
Message 13 may be a suggestion for the problem Anika mentions in the first post. A hard reset has been effective when I've had problems with my KK - screen going blank or freezing. Amazon has a trouble shooting page for each of the Kindles that tells you how to do this. If that doesn't work, contact them directly. I would not replace the KK unless I knew it could not be fixed. My KK with 3G wifi was purchased in Oct 2010 and works fine. I do plan to get a PW maybe later this year because I like the screen lighting. I will not purchase a tablet for reading because the screen is back lit.
**The battery life posted on Amazon is based on reading 30 minutes per day. (That detail is posted somewhere inconspicuous.) If you're using yours 4 hours a day, you will have to recharge more often.
Syahira wrote: "tried doing the hard reset thing?"I've done it for my PW and it worked fine. But I saw that option on the menu. For my kk to work today I had recharged my battery because I guess when I fell asleep last night instead of going to the screensaver it went blank but was continously on. However since recharging it seems ok but I'm going to have to be mindful to make sure I turn it off. But I didn't see the option for a reboot/reset on the kk in the menu. So while I think I might not have buy another kindle soon another part of my questions was should I buy an iPad instead of another kindle. Some stuff that does cost more is of good quality and can last long. Thoughts??
it depends on what you are looking for - if you just want an ereader, then stick wiht kindle - if you want something more inclusive, then look at an ipad - personally, I like my kindle and don't see a Fire or an ipad replacing it anytime soon - i have a touch and it has its uses (like getting stuck on the metro and using the app) - but reading all the time, no thanks
Eric Alan wrote: "so far as I know AMZ isn't storing them in the cloud because I never requested it."The "Manage Your Kindle" page will show you everything that is in the Cloud.

It's not on the menu options for the Kindle Keyboard. To restart the KK, hold the Power button for 20 to 30 seconds. You continue holding the power button even after the screen goes blank. Your KK will reboot.
Also about battery life - Leaving the wifi on also shortens the battery life. I turn wifi off when I'm not using it.
I still have my Kindle Keyboard and it works perfectly... But I've not used it since I received the Kindle Paperwhite as a Christmas present... :)
Why not replace your battery when your KK 3G dies? BatteryShip sells them for $24.95. Has anyone considered doing this?
My first reader was the Sony in 2008. It was still working fine when my husband bought me Kindle for my birthday in 2008. I used that one until the switch broke in 2012 (almost exactly 2 years of use). So, I replaced it with a Paperwhite, and my husband got a Fire at the same time. I read every day on top of my 8 hours of computing at work so the frontlit reader that does not cause eyestrain is the key for me. My husband who was more interested in the multi-use option loves his Fire. I have not previously backed up my library, but you all make good points so I will be doing so this weekend.
Wow, I've read some great ideas! I don't know about replacing the battery if and when it does die. It does not look that simple like changing the battery in a watch. And since I'm international I won't be sending it back to Amazon. I've never heard of BatteryShip from where I'm located. I've been mindful to make sure I either turn off my KK or make sure the screen saver does appear. I have been all this time turning off the wi-fi feature both in my kk and pw. If and when it my kk breaks down I'll probably just buy another PW. I think over time the quality might be made to last longer. And at present their prices are reasonable at least to me. It sounds like though everyone mostly received a kk within the last few years. I love my PW :-)
Still have our 1st gen Kindle DX (the one with Sprint service only). Still works, although we notice the battery life is a bit shorter than before. Also have a 3rd gen Kindle with wifi only. And iPad, for occasional nighttime use. Of all of them, aside from battery life, the one that seems to be wearing out is the 3rd gen Kindle. I can use my iPad, but whenever possible, I still like using the real Kindle. Lighter, easier to hold, easier to read. Etc.
I own a kindle paperwhite, this is my third, the other two, older keyboard models, broke down after six to nine months, same problem, a sudden screen disarray showing dark spots and rays, no way out to fix it, Connected to a computer USB kept working as a hard drive anyway. I hope I can keep this one for a very long time
I am on my first kindle a k3 keyboard wifi only which has been going strong since february of 2011. So close to 2.5 years now more than happy with it I use it with the amazon lighted leather cover. I recently purchased a paper white for my father for his bday and I am almost convinced I should get one for myself, I do love having the cover though I wish it would still fit the paperwhite. Purchasing a new one when the one I have is still working is a bit of a turn off as well, as much as I want the paperwhite I don't "need" it at all.
I just got my first Kindle for Christmas last year and it is going strong. I kinda worry after some of the comments if I should get another one and split the time. Mine is just the basic $69 one. I want to get a used touch so that it had text to speech. I also listen to books when I can't read and have to use a different device. I'm thinking if I got another I could listen to the same ones. Don't know how a refurbished one from Amazon would be.
