Many of us grumble about all those vowels in spelling challenges, so here’s a spelling challenge with a twist. When you sign up for the challenge, post the Goodreads links to the titles of five of your favorite books. Spell out those titles – but without the vowels! In their place, however, you will substitute other letters.
Go to www.random.org and use the random number generator to choose a number between 1 and 18. The first number you get will indicate the letter you must substitute for all of the As in your titles. Repeat the process to select the letter you must substitute for the Es, Is, Os and Us in your titles. If you get a letter that you’ve already gotten for another vowel, try again! You’ll need to have a different letter substituting for every vowel in your list. When you've made your substitutions, please repost your books titles with the substituted letters in place of the vowels. See message #4 below for a sample sign-up post :)
Then spell out your book titles in the usual manner, using the first letter of a book’s title (excluding A, An and The), the first letter of the author’s first/last name or the first letter of the first/last name of a major character in the book.
EXAMPLE: You choose The Cat in the Hat as one of your five books. Your first randomly-generated number is a 6, so according to the chart below, all of the As in your title would be replaced with Hs. Your next random number is a 10, so your Es would be replaced with Ms. Your remaining random number is another 6, but since you've already used that, you roll again and get 13, so Is in your title would be replaced with Rs. Your new title would look like this: Thm Cht Rn thm Hht.
If you’d like, when you finish your first round, you can start over again with another list of five book titles – maybe five titles by one of your favorite authors?
1 = B 2 = C 3 = D 4 = F 5 = G 6 = H 7 = J 8 = K 9 = L 10 = M 11 = N 12 = P 13 = R 14 = S 15 = T 16 = V 17 = W 18 = Y
CHALLENGE RULES: : * Books must be at least 150 pages long. * For each book you read, please indicate the title, the author and the date you finished reading it. If you’re using a character name, be sure to post the character name along with the title, author and date. * Books may only be used for one task in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged : ) * We provide a link to each participant's initial post so you can find your post to update as often as you'd like. When you complete the challenge, please post your entire list as a new message so we can all congratulate you on a job well done :)
