NBRC: Tower Teams Read 2013, Round II discussion
Haha, guys, I'm going to finish, I'm up to 10/15. These days I don't watch much TV except for the HBO blockbusters like Game of Thrones and my kids are grown so more lovely reading time for me.Just conserve your reading time for the August challenge...
Nicole wrote: "I think I just don't read as fast as some of the people in this group! :D"I completely agree with you Nicole. My goal for the year is to read a book a week. I thought that was going to be a hard enough goal, but it seems a lot of people are reading so much more than that. :)
I guess it matters at which stage of life you are at as to how much you can read. When I had three kids at home including one of my children who is special needs and working in our business I read zilch. Maybe five books a year. Now my kids are grown and I work part time and from home a whole lot of time opens up for things we want to do not things we have to do. Take heart, people! You're all doing fine.
I already get made fun of enough for how much I tend to read. Looking forward to the perks of hitting the big 5-0 myself!
I know personally it really depends on what kind of books you're reading. I read recently that most YA novels are written on a 5th grade reading comprehension level (difficulty of sentence structure and vocabulary, not necessarily theme or topics). It's a lot easier to blow through something like that than it is a more adult novel. That's not to knock YA - I read a ton of it myself - but I never fault myself for taking a bit longer with other genres.
I agree, Ashley Marie! Some genres are much easier to blow through than others.I'm reading The Twelve, sequel to the Passage... and it's NOT easy to speed through. But I did A TON of reading yesterday -- finished the last 30% of Light of the Moon, read almost 10% of The Twelve, AND 20% of B is for Burglar.
I've finished SIX now. I'm struggling with the Twelve, as I love it but I feel like it requires more attention and I read slower than other books. Maybe the "big book intimidation" factor is playing a role, I dunno. I really want to read more of the Sword of Truth series, but book two is 1000 pages and it just feels like it would take me weeks haha!
Argh, GR didn't show any new posts in this thread, sorry! I guess I'm one of the speed readers in the group, but I'm with Lisa -- my kids are grown, I only work part-time, and my hubby is rarely home, so I have LOTS of time to read. I also deal with frequent bouts of insomnia, and when I can't sleep, I read.
I'm kicking my own butt on reading, doing NOTHING else the past two days. I've read a TON of pages! :DI really want to finish this challenge haha.

Maybe the "big book intimidation" factor is play..."Sword of Truth isn't that bad, actually. They were the first "big" fantasy series that I tackled. They are written in that "simple YA" way, which makes them easy as hell to just wack your way through, regardless of the daunting 1000 pages.
Don't know if that helps, but thought I'd offer the experience ;)

I am definitely back. I have finished Moon Child which is not a long book but it counts. In a few hours the High Summer Read-a-Thon is starting and I am hoping to read 5 books during this week long Read-a-Thon and then I have just one more book for this challenge.
I am also ready for the August challenge. Still mid move, looking for a job I don't know how much reading I will be doing but I have several books for all categories lined up.
Just realized that I forgot to put Ship Of Magic on my MangoTango bookshelf yesterday so I don't know if it is included in this weeks total.
Lisa - (Aussie Girl) wrote: "I think we are all gearing up for the August challenge."I don't know whether I should try to plan for the August challenge or not. When I *do take the time to plan, I end up changing my books a dozen times (or more!) so I feel like I've wasted all the time I spent planning ahead. I think I'll probably just wing it at first, then start some planning if it looks like we'll need help getting categories done on time LOL
I just picked a handful of books that would fit some of the categories and I can pick and choose from at the beginning. Later in the challenge I'll fit books into specific places!
I was wondering how we were going to do this challenge. Do we claim categories one at a time as we are reading the book that fits? Thought this might work better than claiming multiple categories and not getting to them in the time available... Give everybody a chance to work on available categories.
Jane wrote: "way to go Lisa and Evana.I have just finished

Aren't they amazing! Maybe we can do a buddy read of the final book in the series in like four months time ;)
Check out Monsieur Mango's challenge post. He explains everything! Basically it's a "claim one or two spots at a time" situation, based off what you're actually reading, rather than claiming whole categories.
I think it should be easier this way, and everyone can participate in any category without feeling like they're stepping onto other's turf.plus we will be able to switch it up if we get bored with a category!
Time Lord Steven wrote: "Check out Monsieur Mango's challenge post. He explains everything! I usually have 3-4 books going at the same time, so don't anyone panic if I claim 3-4 slots :) I know others who focus on one book at a time, and that's perfectly ok too! We all have different reading styles :)
It's posted, Nicole, but only for reading right now. It will probably open up for posts later this week. Mango Tango August Challenge
I think a few things are going to be tweaked in the next couple of days -- to make it easier for us, less 'restrictive' -- which is part of the reason the thread hasn't been opened yet for posting :)
Thank you, Barb. Now I can start thinking about which of my books for next month fit into which slot ;) I'll probably be trying for 5 or 6 novels to help out in the group challenge.
I need to start thinking about my August books too -- but I still have some July challenges to finish first!
I'll be reading the Harry Potter series in August for a challenge in another group - "Read a series of at least 5 books from start to finish." I promised my daughter-in-law that I would finally read HP when August rolled around. With the WBY buddy read, I should be able to find somewhere to put them all into our challenge.
If nothing else, Evana, I'm sure they're on other readers' shelves :) You can count books you've read from MT members' shelves OR from other teams' shelves.
