Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I finally have a day off tomorrow, Cindy. It is my wife's birthday but we will probably spend it at the hospital. Regardless, I can sleep tonight I think. I'm starting to have hallucinations from sleep deprivation at this point.

message 753: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know how many times I have pushed myself to the point of hallucinating from exhaustion. I'm glad to hear that you will be able to sleep tonight. Tell your wife happy birthday for me. You are fortunate to have such a wonderful wife that supports you and would spend her birthday at the hospital with you and your mother. Maybe you could have some flowers delivered to her at the hospital?

message 754: by [deleted user] (new)

Gonna watch a movie with Jeff now. Made good progress today with Swan Song, visited with the in-laws, and now I'm tired. Have a great night everyone!

Brenda Seaberg (cricketseaberg) | 241 comments Okay, this sucks. We had to take Grandma to the ER Friday because she fell again (didn't hurt herself with the fall in her living room, fortunately) - she said her left leg was really weak. They're pretty sure it was a Tia (mini stroke, basically). She's now listing severely to the left, without realizing it. And it seems her eyesight has really failed more. So - the doctors said she has to stay in the hospital for 3 days, then they said she needs a nursing home for 24/7 care. Prayers, please. I've got a lot to take care of over the next few days.

message 756: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) I am currently eating dinner, before I have to rush to fix a galla dinner at school. I don't think it will be very galla-ish though, seeing as we're getting famously drunk tonight. I also need to prepare for tomorrow's nine a.m class (which I don't even want to pretend I would enjoy going to).

message 757: by Rick (new)

Rick Shepard I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother Brenda, I'll be sure and keep her in my prayers.

message 758: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments Your grandma is in our thoughts, Brenda.

message 759: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh Breanda, I am so sorry to learn about your grandmother. I will keep her in my prayers. And your family also.

Thinking of you as well, Brenda. Hope she recovers quickly.

Evans Light (evanslight) A beautiful 75-degree zero-humidity day here. Just finished up some delicious stir-fried leftover thai noodles, and am settling into a rocker on the front porch to start back on SWAN SONG (still at the beginning of Chpt 59) while the kids play with the cat in the yard.
Why can't there be more days like this? *sigh*

message 762: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm on chapter 67. Attempting to finish this so I can complete my other commitments and review a couple of books. Been making good progress lately. I do need to wash clothes and clean my house today, but I'm reading in-between chores.

message 763: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Sounds like heaven Evans:) Can't say I've had much time to read lately, but if I'm lucky I may be able to make big strides tonight.

message 764: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments Well, it has been a hard day with mom. She is better mentally, but can't walk still, can't feel when her bladder moves so she is catheterized and may have to learn how to do that to herself. also she couldnt make it through an mri, sso they have to do another one which wont be til tomorrow. I tell you, if I were her I would not be in as high spirits as she seems to be. Looking forward to a long night again.

message 765: by Sam (new)

Sam Arnold (samharnold) Finally I have time to enjoy the first UK episode of Under The Dome. Wow the effects are amazing.

Maybe it helps her spirit to know that her both her sons love her and are there for her.

8:10 p.m. and we just put in the movie Freedom Writers. Don't know if it is any good or not, but the description caught my eye.

message 768: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Sounds like a positive update Adam:)

message 769: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments At this point, Addy, any positive is welcome. Thank you.

message 770: by [deleted user] (new)

Just got home and plan on reading for at least two hours tonight in-between cooking Jeff something to eat.

message 771: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) I'm having the most boring lecture on dramaturgy ever. Because she doesn't teach dramaturgy, but memories. Whaaat?

message 772: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Seaberg (cricketseaberg) | 241 comments Calling the nursing home to get a time for my 74-year-old father and me to go in and fill out the paperwork for my grandmother, who was admitted last night. Then we have to make an appointment for he and I to talk to her investment broker, probably next week. And he told me last night I can extend that day - he wants me to go with him to make his funeral arrangements. Ok, I want off this ride! I didn't sign up for this! Argh! Be strong, be strong!

message 773: by Anthea (new)

Anthea | 19 comments Sorry you're dealing with that, Brenda. Having aging parents is an emotional roller coaster.

How is your mother doing, Adam and Evans?

message 774: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Seaberg (cricketseaberg) | 241 comments Thanks, everyone. It's been a trying week. But her spirits are up, and rehab has started. I don't know what she'll get to ever go home, but I'm not telling her that!

message 775: by Jason (new)

Jason Parent | 69 comments Good luck with everything, Brenda. Hope things get easier for you.

message 776: by [deleted user] (new)

It almost broke my heart when my mother was admitted to the nursing home Brenda. I will say that she developed a few close friendships with some of the staff and that made me happy. Hang in there! We are here for you!

message 777: by [deleted user] (new)

I am planning on reading for an hour or so then I have to do some things tonight. Cheated on dinner and ate some leftovers. Hope everyone is having a pleasant day. I am hot right now. Summer came back to bite us in the rump.

I remember going through the whole process when my father had to go to a nursing home. I don't think you can ever be fully prepared for it. It's one thing to think things through logically, but another to actually have to go through it with family. I wish you the best of luck, I'm sure things will go well!:)

Evans Light (evanslight) Hope everybody finds their way through troubled times. My thoughts are with you.

Here's a mild distraction from troubles at home...was driving through a small town today and saw a sign at a Habitat for Humanity REStore advertising all books for 25 cents. Pulled in and found these oldie goldies.

See that one with the black cover? That's an excellent condition first edition printing of a very famous book. Can anyone guess what it is? : )
(I'll share the answer later)

Also picked up some vintage Bradbury, a couple very hilarious 1974 porno novels (side-splitting descriptions...I'll have to share a few choice selections sometime), and also that book that predicts that the alignment of the planets in 1982 will end the world (I love books on failed prophecies). Also scored a nice vintage F. Paul Wilson novel...keeping an eye open for the other two in the trilogy.

You got it, Brenda! Nice work!

But Cindy, this copy was first printing, August 1976. Doubt it's worth anything much, but you can bet I checked it thoroughly for autographs!

It's almost 11 p.m. and I just got home. Only spent a little over an hour at home since 6:30 this morning. I'm exhausted. Didn't get any reading done today but I'll be back tomorrow in full force. Staying home Thursday after work.

Hope you get some rest, and a chance to read tomorrow! I'm doing research on Kent Haruf, preparing for book club tomorrow. I lead a discussion on his new book, Benediction.

message 796: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) It's 13.10 here, and I'm currently relaxing on the sofa. I'm about to take up my reading (who has suffered greatly in the past 14 days after school began). I'm having a few days off (because UNI is awesome), and I'll spend my days nerding instagram and reading.

message 797: by Rick (new)

Rick Shepard So, at 5:30 this morning, the windchimes in front of my place started crashing really violently. I poked my head out the door to see a big old black bear trying to steal the birdseed. He would grab the birdseed holder, which is on the same pole as the windchimes, and when the chimes would sound, it would freak him out and he would run out back until they stopped. Finally after 3 or 4 tries, he apparently just called it aday. I'd never seen one that close up in real life. I know they can be dangerous, but he (or she) was so cute.

I've never read Kent Haruf. I picked up Plainsong a while back, because I thought it looked really interesting, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet.
