Sadie Forsythe | 32 comments This is a general "is it possible/how to' questions I've agreed to beta read a book for someone. Yea me. They've sent me a mobi file. Thank you much.

My question is can I take notes on my kindle and then somehow send the file (including notes) back to them? The taking notes part is easy. I just don't know how they are saved. If, when finished, I transfer the file from my kindle to an email will it include the notes or are they only saved on the device, meaning the file I return will be the same as before I took notes on it?

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Betsy Notes on your kindle are saved in a separate file on the device. All notes on all books go in the same file and I believe would stay with you and not go to the author when you return the book.

Sadie Forsythe | 32 comments I was afraid someone would say that. Guess that's my easy method out the window then. Thanks Betsy.

Betsy I'm wondering if there isn't some kind of code inserted into the actual kindle file, however. How else does the kindle know where the note goes? I suppose it could just be by locations, since the location gets saved with the note in the separate file.

If you want the author/publisher to have your notes, you could probably copy the notes for that book to a text file and send it with the book.

Oh, there's an idea. I hadn't thought of that. Good one.

Sadie Forsythe | 32 comments Before the thread is closed as having accomplished it's goal, which it has. In case anyone else, like me, wants to know haw to actually do this I found some directions on Techhive.com.

1. Connect your Kindle to your PC.

2. Open My Computer (or just Computer if you're on Vista/Windows 7), then look for Kindle in your list of devices.

3. Double-click the Kindle icon, then open the Documents folder.

4. Look for a file called My Clippings.txt. Copy it to your desktop (or folder of choice), then open it in Word (or your word processor of choice).

You'll see that the notes are sorted by book and by date--very handy.
