schmorireads (lorinicole33) when will you start the challenge? I REALLY want to do it!

like that one with the street! Would have a lot of different streets to choose from...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I like the prime numbers one - if someone will list the ones that are primes! (Math is not my friend.)

message 204: by Elizabeth (NC) (new)

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments I know that summer is often a time of travel, but maybe an anti-travel (similar to the anti-wedding) and read a local book. Try to make it as local as possible (hometown, region, state)--more local than simply your home country.

Nicole | 155 comments Am I the only one counting down the days until the new challenge is posted? I think I have as much fun picking books for the challenge as I do reading!

The summer challenge will start June 1st. Don't worry, we are all counting down the days....I love going on a "book scavenger hunt".

I misread this and thought it said put your finger on your pie and started thinking about books with pie in the title or about pie. (Sorry, I'm a little hungry).

Was really going to suggest, since June 13 is International Knit in Public Day, that we celebrate by reading a book about knitting (fiction or non) in public.

message 208: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Since June, July, and August are months 6,7,and 8, go to your GR "To Read" shelf, and read a book with a 6, 7, or 8 in its numerical order on your shelf. So you could read book 6, 7, 8, 66, 67, 68, etc.

message 209: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 400 comments I don't know if this has been posted yet, so please forgive me if it's a repeat.

Since Summer is a time for vacations and many of us are struggling just to make ends meet--Pick a country that you would love to travel to and read a book wherein the author is from the country and the book is set there.

...6876. No, not really, but sometimes it feels like I have that many!

I love the idea :-)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments I thought of another one:

Read a book with the word red, white, or blue is in the title.

message 212: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Since Cynthia keeps track of the tasks completed, complete the task that was least completed in the spring challenge or that was most completed in the spring challenge.

message 213: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) Not sure if anything similar has been mentioned yet, so apologies if so ... I've read this thread sporadically so bound to have missed some!

Summer is often the time for going to music festivals and enjoying music outside. Read a non-fiction book about a band or musician, or read a book with some kind of musical reference in the title.

As we all love books so much, read a non-fiction book about a bookshop, a library or the love of books.

There are some great suggestions here! Can't wait to see what Cynthia gives us!!!

message 214: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments June 6th is D-Day read a book pertaining to any events of World War II (D-Day, Holocaust, Pearl Harbour, Japanese Internment Camps....)

June 19th is Garfield the Cat day - read a book of comics or a graphic novel

Read a book with more than 500 pages

Read a book entirely outside

Read a book that was nominated as a group read but not selected (you can look at old polls)

Read a book written in the 1800s, 1900s, and 2000s

Read a non-fiction book

Read a book about Native Americans, since they were in America long before July 4th, 1776.

Summer Loving - read a romance novel with a cheesy cover.

Very good suggestions.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) I am new so I am not sure if these would be good ideas or not but I thought I would at least try to contribute.

Ideas:
June

- June is National Adopt-A-Cat Month, read a book about a cat or with cat in the title.
- The 4th week of June is National Camping Week, read a book with something about camping in the title (ex.tent, cabin, camp, etc.)
- June 12th: the baseball was invented, read a book about baseball or something related to baseball in the title.
- June 24th, U.F.O. day... read something about U.F.O's or aliens.

July
- July 3rd, Dog Days Begin, so read a book about dogs or with dog in the title or something related to dogs.
- July 4th, Fourth of July, read a book with red, white or blue in the title.
- July 28th, first finger print taken, read a mystery or crime book.

August
- August 2nd - Read a book about friendship to honor friendship day.
- August 22nd - Be An Angel Day - Read a book about angels or with something related to angels in the title.
- August 28th - Dream Day - Read about about dreams or with something dream related in the title.

message 217: by El (new)

El Libraries and/or bookstores often have a shelf of Staff Picks recommendations. Choose one book from the selection that looks completely opposite what you would normally read.
(Or ask a library or bookstore employee if there is no specific shelf - but you must read their first recommendation, whether you would normally read it or not.)

That sounds great, but who do you ask if you are the librarian?

message 219: by El (new)

El Haha, it's like asking who cuts the barber's hair...? :)

Well, then you could do the bookstore portion, or ask a fellow librarian. (Maybe a librarian from a different branch?)

I guess I could force myself to go to a bookstore...LOL

message 221: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Haha, you don't have to buy books when you go there, just get the title of a book. I often go to bookstores for coffee and take pictures of titles with my camera phone that look interesting so I can get them at the library. Yeah, I'm a library nerd too.

It's just that....I have this problem....when I go in a bookstore....I can't leave without buying something....

message 224: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Yeah.. that's why I buy coffee.. or my fiance something. you could wait until you need to buy someone else something.. hrmmmmm.

Lori (batchelorxyz) | 158 comments Kristen wrote: "Yeah.. that's why I buy coffee.. or my fiance something. you could wait until you need to buy someone else something.. hrmmmmm."

I used to embarrass my kid by walking around writing down ISBN numbers in the bookstore.

Now I just make sure I go to Half-Price Books so when I do buy something it isn't terribly expensive. LOL

message 226: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Lol. My fiance feels the same way when I whip out my cell phone and start snapping photos. I go "library-hopping" when I run out of books, and hit up all the closest libraries when I can't find all the books I want at one.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) Nothing is wrong with Half-Price Books I love that place.

I love to go library hopping and it is nice to hear I am not alone LOL
I get very excited at the thought of a visit to another library :)

Rachel Erin | 21 comments Let's all get to know each other...

A book written by an author who has the same first or last name as you

Depending on your gender, a book from Jezebel's 75 books every woman should read or Esquire's 75 books every man should read

A book with a character who has the same proffesion as you

A non-fiction book about your favorite subject from school (history, art, math, etc.)

A book set in the city/state/country you're currently living in

Also, spread the love and read a book from the 'unpopular books' shelf of goodreads

message 234: by Sarah D (new)

Sarah D I believe if you go under explore then click on books it's a shelf in there. I like that idea!

message 235: by Sarah D (last edited May 13, 2009 05:27PM) (new)

Sarah D There is also a list in there called "Read These In School - Would Have Preferred A Root Canal"

That's great!

Or, what about go here http://www.goodreads.com/list/best_by...

and choose a book that's listed under the decade you were born.

message 236: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Sharon,

Today I was dropping off books at the library and I told my fiance I had a fine of 20 cents. He told me to go in and pay it. I was like uhoh that could be dangerous. Sure enough I came out with three more books when I already have like 30 books out. I just can't help myself.

message 237: by Lori (new)

Lori (batchelorxyz) | 158 comments I found the unpopular shelf...and I count myself lucky that I have only read one of them. And only one is on my TBR. LOL

Shannon SA (shannonsa) QUESTION FOR CYNTHIA: First, a THANK YOU for The Spring Challenge! It was the first I've even done, and am thoroughly enjoying it, although I won't finish all the books by end May, and will definitely do the Summer Challenge too. Question: are we allowed to use unread books that we allocated to the Spring Challenge for the Summer Challenge (assuming they fit a task)?

message 241: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Oh yes that's fine - you could even re-read a book you used for this challenge once the next one starts. And you are most welcome.

message 242: by Donna Jo (last edited May 16, 2009 06:03AM) (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 207 comments Read a nonfiction book about a religion other than your own. If you are Christian, read something other than a Christian denomination, for example, Islamic, Jewish, Wiccan, etc. If you are atheist or agnostic, you have a wide choice. When reporting back, you need not state your own religion.

message 243: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments Lori wrote: "I found the unpopular shelf...and I count myself lucky that I have only read one of them. And only one is on my TBR. LOL"

I checked out the unpopular shelf as well, and have also only read one of them, but thought it was a great book - The Red Badge of Courage. Two more are among my TBRs, but I also saw at least two that are also on the list of 1001 Books You Should Read Before You Die.

This leads to a question: Does unpopular mean it's a bad book/story? There may be some excellent books languishing there unnoticed and unappreciated. Rachel, you had an excellent idea!

message 244: by El (new)

El I think "unpopular" could mean many different things, from poorly written or no plot/character development to something universally considered to be "uncool" to something people plain did not understand or read at the wrong time in their lives. The Red Badge of Courage probably falls into the latter category - most people read that in high school I think and high school readings notoriously become unliked by so many people.

I seem to have that problem too and it is very strong.Buying something else doesn't help because I only have eye for the books and can't concentrate on other things around.

I better don't try that out because it will make it worse for my mental health! And the one of my boyfriend when he is around with me!

That one was in the previous challenge.

message 248: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Not really a sugesstion for an actual task.

Limit the number of books for the 5 point and 10 point to 1 book and the 15 point to 2 books (we did have one task that was 3 books, which was a lot for just 15 points). Since it looks like a lot of people are going to be completing the challenge, possibly limit the 25 pointer to 2 books.

message 249: by Alice (last edited May 17, 2009 01:18PM) (new)

Alice (aliceg) | 254 comments read a book of short stories

support a local charity shop and read a book you buy from there

i always want to go out and buy new clothes when summer comes: read a book with an item of clothing in the title

read a book with june, july or august in the title

find a member of TNBBC (other than yourself!) whose birthday is in june, july or august and read a book from their list that they have given 5 stars (or a variation on that one could be to read one of their TBR books)

Read 3 books which are listed in the BBC's top 100 reads that you haven't read before

In honour of your first school (who were probably the people who taught you to read), read a book that begins with the same letter as that school

Ask someone you work with to recommend a book and read it (if you don't work then ask someone in your family or a neighbour)

As it's actually winter in australia read a book set in australia just to let them know we're not ignoring them!

The Universities break up for summer in June (slackers!) - look at the list of degrees that the university closest to you run and read a book about the first subject listed

Do some research into when the company you work for was founded and read a book that was published in that year. (if you don't work use a company that a member of your family work for or the last company you worked for).

Find the person who posted directly after you on your first post in the summer challenge thread to be and read one of their books that they gave only 1 star to! (If they haven't rated any as 1 star go to the next person down)
