Aditi How was it for you, transitioning from Harry Potter to The Casual Vacancy, considering that they are poles apart in every way?

message 1663: by Dana (new)

Dana I know when I read a book, there are moments I wish I could be inside and stop something from happening. Were there any points in this book that you wish didn't happen, just for the sake of the characters, but you put it in anyway just to make a story? Would you want to be inside this story?

message 1664: by Dixie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dixie Goode Dana. I know just what you mean! As a kid I first experienced that with Johnny Tremain and where the red fern grows. Knowing the tragedy made a better story but still just laying there at night imagining I could get into the book and warn them to change their future. .

Carole Weave-lane Yes I would agree but there is an undercurrect them of death in this book -I canot deny it.

message 1669: by Janette (new) - rated it 5 stars

Janette Has anyone read both the British and the US English versions?

I ask because I keep being snagged by the "like Mexicans streaming into Texas" phrase - I cannot believe it was in the original version. Do I have to buy a British version to read what JKR really wrote, or is this phrase in the original?

Thanks.

message 1670: by Dixie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dixie Goode Janett. I think she must have done so, I didn't read it in the British Edition but I found this review in the Winnipeg free press and it said the following

"The Casual Vacancy's flavour, like that of the Potter novels, is intensely English. Teenagers don't kiss, they "snog." Councillors don't take bribes, they get "backhanders." Poor people collect not welfare but "benefits."
Which isn't to say Rowling is oblivious to North American culture. She uses the lyrics to American pop star Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad as a key motif. But sometimes her reach across the pond rings false, as when she writes that kids from the Fields underclass invaded Pagford schools "much as Mexicans streamed into Texas."

message 1686: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Wells Why did you decide to write a book primarily for adults when your young adult books were such a success?

message 1687: by Theresa (new) - rated it 3 stars

Theresa I loved the Harry Potter books, and must admit that I was a bit skeptical about reading The Casual Vacancy. But it was excellent. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.

Was the book based on real events? Or did you invent everything?

message 1688: by Cara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cara Howdy!

I review books by women authors for The California Journal of Women Writers (check us out at www.tcjww.org) so my question would be---

To what extent does "being a woman" influence her as an author or influence specific characters (I'm thinking specifically of Samantha and Krystal)?

If she was feeling really generous, I would also love to interview her as an example of a high profile female writer ( me and probably 60 million other people too but hey, if you don't ask you will never get an answer!)

message 1689: by Nirti (new) - added it

Nirti why did you try something other than your celebrated series harry potter , "The Casual Vacancy" and "Cuckoos Calling" both are not as appreciable as harry potter . you could have continued with the magical world of witchcraft and wizardry as many of us want some more of it. hogwarts stoy has not exhausted

message 1700: by Marnie (new)

Marnie Arianto Yay! Thank you for this giant opportunity. I have read the book. I love the story as i am also a parent for my two children.

My question would be "what make you so change, i mean the gendre of the book, from Harry Potter which is a fantasy and now family drama story?

But you did it great. This book remainds on the importance of a parents and family.

Best Regards

Marnie
