Chandeep Singh How does one take the chance of writing Harry Potter . I am a big fan of the whole series but I am equally amazed at the thought process behind it.
then to top that you completely change that and write Casual Vacancy
how do you do that ?
Bravo but please enlighten us

I am a major Harry Potter fan and when I read this book I was genuinely surprised. Were you expecting this book to come as a surprise to many readers?

message 553: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin When can you make a new book that's related to harry potter? Maybe a series about Harry's children?

message 554: by Katy (new)

Katy Do you plan on writing other young adult books?

message 555: by Halah (new)

Halah Did writing The Casual Vacancy change you in anyway? Did you learn new things, pick up writing habits different from the Harry Potter books?

message 556: by Jason (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jason Casual Vacancy proved that you are as gifted a writer with adult themes as you are with young adult oriented material (although the Harry Potter novels were masterful for any generation). What projects and genres are on your horizon? What interests you?

message 557: by Paul (new)

Paul D Cookson J.K. Rowling, Would you ever consider having this book made into a movie? Also were some of your characters based on any friends or family? Thank You, Paul D Cookson

The Literary Connoisseur How do you feel about how The Causal Vacancy turned out? Plot ending and popularity among readers wise.

message 559: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Is the boyband Samantha likes One Direction or based off of them?

message 560: by Mahima (new)

Mahima Khosla Ma'am i love your harry potter series its just awesome, will you write any fiction like this in future?

message 561: by Nikki (new)

Nikki What was the most difficult change to make when it came to writing The Casual Vacancy as opposed to writing the Harry Potter series?

message 562: by Sian (new)

Sian Absolutely loved this book Jo. It really accurately grabs a small town and exposes it in such a honest way that you can't help but feel for every very real character. My question is this - is the only character flaw that Our Saintly Fairbrother has the fact that he died? This book seems very much about showing that no matter how people may view a person, they're simply that, a person. Not good nor bad. They all have their own reasons for their actions. But it seems Barry Fairbrother is the only one about whom no negative aspect is revealed. Is his character flaw his lack of life?

Michelle Tomlin Why veer so very far from the fantastical genre in this new book? Do you plan to return to that genre?

message 564: by Book (new)

Book Worm what was your inspiration behind this book ?And did you worry about people not liking it after you had a successful novel(Harry potter) ?

message 565: by Chris (new) - rated it 3 stars

Chris Do you believe that at some point in our lives, each of one of us shares at least one trait, with all of the inhabitants of Pagford? If so, what does that say about human nature, society, and ourselves as a whole?

message 566: by Rustin (new)

Rustin Petrae What prompted such a dramatic switch in genres from fantasy to general fiction?

message 567: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl I've read all your HP books and absolutely loved them. I am assuming C.V. is nothing like the Potter books. What could you say to me to convince me to try Casual Vacancy?

message 568: by Shug (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shug You had an excellent understanding of the cultural and familial demands on modern British Asians, how did you research this?

Pauline Connolly When is your next book coming out?!

message 570: by Pablo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pablo Porras zúñiga Dear Joanne:
I am part of the generation that grew up with Harry and now, I read Casual Vacancy. I liked it a lot, the final was unexpectected and the book has a very good plot.
My question is: Was Krystal really pregnant?
Thank you

message 571: by Tamanna (new)

Tamanna How did you think of such an intriguing plot?

message 572: by Isabel (new) - added it

Isabel Johnstone blogger Did you ever consider publishing the Casual Vacancy, or any other book, under another name since it is such a departure from the Harry Potter series?

message 573: by Wayne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Wayne What was your favorite part of Rhe Casual Vacenxy that you wrote about ?

message 574: by Laurie (new) - rated it 4 stars

Laurie Melton Is there any character in The Casual Vacancy that you can relate to? Why?

message 575: by India (last edited Jul 04, 2013 09:50AM) (new)

India I looooooove you sooooooo much! I was wondering if harry will make a big comeback? Oh please give it into consideration.
thanks

message 576: by Harland (new)

Harland Writing a completely different genre from your previous work, did you think that this would also be a hit?

message 577: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Halpin While reading this book, there were times I thought decisions were going to be made, and different events would take place. Because of this, the ending caught me so off guard. It was lovely to be surprised, even if it was tragic and once again brought me to tears as you so often have in the past. My question is, how do you keep a linear perspective while writing each character? In other words, did you plan out each character's fate in the beginning, and intertwine them before writing or did that happen as you wrote them?
Beautifully done. Once finished, I couldn't stop thinking/talking about it. It really hit home in places, and it was brilliant. Thank you.

message 578: by Manpreet (new)

Manpreet Singh You have covered almost everyone from Children to Adults. My question is who will be your next target Audience?

message 579: by Holly (new)

Holly Your descriptions of characters have really inspired me in my own writing. But which character in "The Casual Vacancy" did you feel the strongest connection to?

message 580: by Jenny (last edited Jul 04, 2013 09:58AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jenny Teddy wrote: "I listened to the audio version of The Casual Vacancy. I loved the reader. I despised every adult in the story...and most of the children.
Can you tell me why?"

I so agree! I don't think "realistic" versions of people have to mean they are completely unlikable. This had to have been a conscious choice to create such characters.

message 581: by Nouhaila (new)

Nouhaila Moqaddem Dear J.K Rowling, How do you identify with each caracter in the book?

message 582: by Ashton (new)

Ashton Gray Since you wrote the Harry Potter series and thats what most people think of when they hear J.K Rowling , do feel that most people wont like this book because its not what you were known best for?

message 583: by Deb (new) - added it

Deb I feel that in America Hollywood and television are glamorizing teen age pregnancy and glossing over the reality of the entire experience, never delving into the consequences that are lying in wait for both the mother and the innocent child. With Krystal, you seem to project teenage pregnancy and its dynamics realistically. What are your thoughts on teenage pregnancy? Babies having babies? From where do you think solutions need to come?

message 584: by Denise (new)

Denise Cohen In the Harry Potter series it took 7 books to come to a conclusion. Was it harder to write one book that completed the entire story without the chance of finishing it in a sequel and did you have as much backstory in this as in the HP series?

message 585: by Luna (new) - added it

Luna What made you want to write The Casual Vacancy? How did you come up with the idea of it? Did you have to completely finish Harry Potter before starting on this book or did the idea come to you before finishing Harry Potter?

message 586: by Anna (new)

Anna I haven't read it yet, but my mother did. And she wanted to know: What did you tried to show when you killed a little girl and her brother?

message 587: by Ethan (new) - added it

Ethan Why did you write a adult fiction novel after your huge success with the children's fantasy genre?

Eleanor You're an expert at creating characters that aren't necessarily bad people, but can be very unlikeable at times. Is this a conscious effort? And what are some of your favorite not-so-likeable protagonists?

Mariah Grace Which came first: the world of Pagford, or the people who inhabit it? Did one inspire the other, or was it a suitable marriage from the start?

message 590: by Maria (new) - added it

Maria I have just a few questions here:

1)Did you plan the unfortunate ending of Krystal Weedon from the beginning, or did it just end up that way?

2)Did you have to stop sometimes while you were writing and remind yourself that you aren't trying to do anything remotely close to Harry Potter? Was it hard to break free from the world of Hogwarts?

message 591: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Sahulka I'm very curious to klnow how hard it was for you to adjust from writing Harry Potter and being "stuck in his world" for so many years, to writing an adult "drama"?

message 592: by Janice (new)

Janice Todd This was obviously a switch in writing style after the seven Harry Potter stories, a genre where you had success. Switching genre and style, did you have anyone give more indepth feed back critique to help you change your style?

message 593: by Leonita (new)

Leonita Noviandri what makes you write The Casual Vacancy? afterall, your previous book is all about fantasy, what makes you jump that far to another genre? :D

message 594: by Allilyn (new)

Allilyn Harry Potter was a fabulous series, more towards the children range. How did you go from writing a children's series to such a serious and true topic? Was it hard or was it easy to go from such a different topic?

message 595: by Lora (new)

Lora Waeckerle In an interview, JK Rowling said that this book was very personal to her and she felt compelled to write it. My question would be:

Due to the personal value this book has to you, which (if any) character do you relate most to?

message 596: by Jen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jen Amador Of the many characters in The Casual Vacancy, which was the one you found the most important to write and develop?

message 597: by McKenzie (new) - added it

McKenzie Templeton The Harry Potter Series has been translated into 74 languages and has sold about 450 million copies. Knowing this, does it pressure you to write more iconic best sellers (such as The Casual Vacancy) and make sure they will sell like the Harry Potter series?

message 598: by Sue (new) - rated it 1 star

Sue Ellis Patrick wrote: "If you could ask J.K. Rowling one question about The Casual Vacancy, what would it be? In celebration of the paperback release, J.K. Rowling will answer one winning question about the book from Goo..."
I thought the book was Awful from Beginning to end.
I stuck it out but I have never read such a depressing book. My question is
How depressed were you when you wrote the book. If You weren't?! Why on earth did you choose such vile story lines and disgusting language?
Thank you

Mauricio Tanzi Hi JK,

When writing the book did you have the notion in your head that this could help people around the world that the social issues of UK are also global issues?

message 600: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Neal I think you are brilliant! I am curious if you plotted out the entire book or if these intricate plot lines come naturally to you. I hope you are not afraid to write another youth novel or sequel. I am sure it is fearful to live up to such an epic series like Harry Potter but I hope you realize your followers will love it as long as you keep that amazing voice and description. I am curious what prompted this novel? You must be truly interesting to be able to write about two books on both ends of the spectrum. When is the next book available? Your voice is so strong and you have a magical way of describing things you write about anything and I'd still buy it. I suppose I feel a but smarter after reading even rereading any one of your books. I hope theses words find you. Good luck. Jenna Neal
