I read about a book and all I remember about it is The heir/prince is dead or ran away and the younger brother has to go though ceremony and not expected to live though it. m/m

Not exactly, but a bit like The False Prince, which, BTW, I really enjoyed.

If still looking, can you add any other information? For example, was the ceremony religious or military? Was he expected not to survive because the ceremony is physically dangerous, or because gods/demons/spirits or whatever might kill him? What was the purpose of the ceremony -- coming of age, or to prove his worth, or a coronation/taking of office? What was the 'feel' of the book -- fantasy, military/adventure, science fiction?
