Cherene Hello! I started this group for obvious reasons, nice to see you all. Anyone can feel free to add topics. Anyone reading either of these books yet?

message 2: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) I'll try and get to World War Z this month :-).

Look at you go girl!

message 3: by Kristie (new)

Kristie Hi Cherene! (And Cathie!!)

I just finished Gone Girl in June and I'm hoping to "read" World War Z this month, so the picks are perfect! I'm actually planning to listen to the audio version of World War Z. I've been told that it's fabulous with a lot of famous people doing the reading. I've got the extended version on hold at the library. :)

message 4: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) Hi Kristie! ~~ waving :-)

message 6: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) Love it!! :-). See that huge grin ~ it's mine!!

I love monkeys as much as fireworks...one of my favourite animals to inhabit this beautiful world.

Thank you Kristie :-). I'm still smiling :-)

message 7: by Cherene (new)

Cherene Famous people reading World War Z? I might need to try it. I totally abused the free trial for Amazon's audio purchase spot to get an audio of Ocean at the End of the Lane. I plan on removing my free trial as soon as I'm done the book. I know, it's horrid, but I hate audiobooks. And I don't buy books (usually-cough) until I know they're my favorites.

On that note, thanks for joining me. I was beginning to feel lonesome, nice to see some familiar faces.

message 8: by Kristie (new)

Kristie Happy to be here!

I am not a fast reader so I started listening to audiobooks in my car over the past several months. I never liked them before because I felt like I was cheating by listening instead of reading, but now I'm starting to like them.

I've never bought an audiobook though. I always borrow them from the library. Usually there's a shorter wait list for them too.

World War Z has a few different audio versions. There is an abridged book version (about 5-6 CDs), a movie version I think (it's with the actor narrators, but only about 5-6 CDs again), and a movie tie-in version (that one combines the two, so it's about 10 CDs). I've heard the longer one is the best, so I have a hold on that one. Looking forward to checking it out.

message 9: by Anima (new)

Anima Miejska Hi, I'm really happy to be here, Cherene, thanks for letting me know about this group. I was looking for some smaller group due to my interests and here it is :).

I follow NYTimes, I have a weekly newsletter with their ranking of bestsellers and the picks for this month are very much to my interests, so all perfect, and what's most important, some familiar, friendly faces here :)

~~~ waves to Cherene, Cathie and Kristie ~~~
message 10: by Anima (new)
Anima Miejska Hi, Vanessa, it is good to see you here :)
message 11: by Cherene (new)
Cherene Hello to you as well. Thanks for joining me.
I finally sorted all the ARCs I have handled since may 2013 (many I am still waiting to read or receive) and it turns out I have about 87.
LoL. No wonder I'm so behind.
message 12: by Cathie (new)
Cathie (catitude) Hi Anima and Vanessa :-)
message 13: by Cherene (new)
Cherene I was thinking about reading the books prior to the sequels, but I don't think it will work. Too many of these novels are sequels to 10+ books.
So, those of you that have to read things in sequence might have to fit the other books in. Sorry.
message 14: by Liana (new)
Liana (lianasiobhan) Hi everyone
<-- another crossover from the Goodreads Group lol
I can't wait to get started on at least one of these two books. I never got to read Gone Girl with the other group and World War Z looks so good so I think I'll start there (after I've finished "Dead Ever After" as I only read one book at a time otherwise I get lost lol)
message 15: by Cathie (new)
Cathie (catitude) Hi Liana :-)
message 16: by Kristie (new)
Kristie Hi Liana! :)
message 17: by Cherene (new)
Cherene Welcome! Thanks for joining us. : )
message 18: by Melanie (new)
Melanie (Perpetually Reading) (melanieasato) Gone girl sounds good :) but all the World War Z copies from my library's been checked out :/ have too look around for more copies...poor college student problems
Cherene Just a heads up that August reads poll ends July 15th to let our library borrowers grab their copy. Make sure you vote if you have a preference. I think I'm going to stick with the top 2 picks. That way if someone's not interested in one book they can still check out the other.
I picked my copy - of World War Z - for 6 bucks at Walmart. My library had a lot of holds. Does your library have access to digital copies? I usually find eBooks have a way lesser wait list. Also, they are forced to be returned on time which speeds up the process.
message 20: by Melanie (new)
Melanie (Perpetually Reading) (melanieasato) I'm not really a ebook kinda person. I love holding the real deal in my hands. But I'll definitely check out the Walmart nearby!
message 21: by Cindy (new)
Cindy Hi there! Just joined this group this morning! I'm very excited to be a part of this group! I often use the NYT bestsellers list as my reading list! I've already read Gone Girl and look forward to starting the next book on your list!
message 22: by Kristie (new)
Kristie Hi Cindy! Welcome to the group! :) We are also reading World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War this month, if you are interested. Look forward to seeing some of your thoughts on the discussion threads.
message 23: by Kilani (new)
Kilani  (kilisky) Hi everyone I'm just joining the group. I'm really excited to start reading the NYT Bestsellers list. Lately I haven't had much time to read so I hope joining Good reads and this group will change that.
message 24: by Anima (new)
Anima Miejska Welcome to the group, Kilani :)
message 25: by Cherene (new)
Cherene Welcome, Kilani. :)
I've read so much more since joining Goodreads. I bet you will too. You find so many interesting books and conversations that you can't help but read more. Welcome to the group! :)
message 27: by Kilani (new)
Kilani  (kilisky) Thanks for the warm welcome everybody :)
message 28: by Anima (new)
Anima Miejska So how is everyone doing? What are your other latest reads?
message 29: by Kristie (new)
Kristie Hi Anima! I'm doing well. I haven't had much reading time in July. Hopefully, August will be better! I'm almost done with The Casual Vacancy and I'm working through When She Woke. Both are good books. I'm also about half way through a few others that I'm hoping to finish up soon because I have some great reads planned for August! Hoping to squeeze in some reading and relaxation time this weekend. :)
How have you been? Any plans for the weekend? Any good reads lately?
message 30: by Anima (new)
Anima Miejska Yesterday I finished Tell the Wolves I'm Home and I think it is a very good book, the topic is a difficult one (AIDS, dying, friendship, loss, coming of age themes) but the book is set in '87 and it was an interesting experience to timetravel to a not so distant past. The book is also well-written and the pace is quick so it is a good read to ponder over important topics instead of struggling with the language and composition.
Now I'm reading The 5th Wave, I've started a little bit earlier than the buddy read date set for the first of August in a different group, but I have a huge pile of books to read in August (all interesting) and some challenges to complete thus my choice.
I don't have any specific plans for the weekend, I hope to find some time to read :)
I'm also waiting for the discussion on Joyland, which I read two weeks ago (I could stop myself, I was so curious about this book)
message 31: by Kristie (new)
Kristie I'm planning to start the Fifth Wave as soon as I finish When She Woke (hopefully this weekend). I'm also planning to read Joyland this month, but probably a little later in the month. I have so many books planned! I didn't get to World War Z this month, but I'm hoping to squeeze that in too.
Tell the Wolves I'm Home looks so good to me. I've been wanting to read it for a while, but never seem to find the time. I'd like to get to it before the end of the year. I'm glad that you thought it was good.
message 32: by Anima (new)
Anima Miejska Tell the wolves I'm home is definitely a book worth reading, although it took me some time to get to it either.
I didn't get to World War Z as well this month as well, but I don't give up and hope to read it in September as it is going to be a month with less books scheduled :)
I hope we can discuss the 5th Wave later in August, let me know when you finish, I'm really interested in your opinion about it :)
message 33: by Kristie (new)
Kristie I will Anima!
