I have only read 2 chapters, but so far I am very interested in learning more about Mariam and her family. I haven't decided if I believe her mother's or her father's side of the stories she is explaining, but for some reason, i am leaning more towards the mother. guess we shall see.... so far it is an easy read...

message 8: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Wamsley | 52 comments I have been wondering the same thing! I hope it's the father because it would be better for her, but I'm guessing your probably right about the mom telling the truth. :( Poor kid. It also seems to be well written so far, I'm excited about that. Well written books are just so much easier to enjoy.

Well, after reading thru chapter 5, I'm even more into the story, and feeling sorry for poor Mariam. I don't wanna give too much away about the ending of chapter 5, but wow!

message 10: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Wamsley | 52 comments I'm on Chapter 18 now. I am so invested in this story I can hardly put it down. My heart is so broken for what she has gone through and is going through. This book is pretty intense.

message 11: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 10 comments I was the same way Brandi! This book is phenomenal. There was one point towards the end that had me crying on the metro, this book is simply fantastic and there's not a lot of difficult prose. I feel so bad for these women! If you haven't read The Kite Runner I strongly sugget that one too. I haven't read the authors latest book, but I'm confident that will be a good read as well.

Wow you are moving right along.... I'm not quite that far but I'm really engaged. This is a wonderful gripping book. Makes you want to keep reading.... I'll have to try the kite runner soon! I'm only on ch 8

So much has happened in Mariam's life in just part one! I'm really excited to see what happens in part two.... She has overcome lots of trauma in just a few short years. I couldn't imagine being in her shoes. Poor child...

message 14: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Wamsley | 52 comments There is so much emotion that I can't even put it all into words. I can't imagine being in the shoes of these girls who are forced to become women way too soon. I feel like I can't on, but I can't stop now. I hope there is a happy ending for them.

Very compelling story of these young women and women rights in general. To not have voice and be heard or taken seriously or have any value on ur life except being a footstool for men is very heart breaking.

message 16: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Wamsley | 52 comments It's books like these that make me realize how lucky I really am.

message 17: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Wamsley | 52 comments Oh my gosh, I just finished the book. I haven't read a book this intense in a long time.

Ur absolutely correct Brandi. We don't realize how fortunate we are to be born n freedom

message 19: by Liza (new)

Liza | 35 comments I'm going to ignore this whole thread until I start reading. I read the Kite Runner and it was kinda disturbing, well some parts were. I pretty sure is one of those types of stories as well. I'll start sometime in July. I am stuck in 4 books now.

I am on Chapter 30! I can not believe what has happened with Laila and her family! I was NOT expecting that at all. I did however, expect her not to meet up with Tariq again, but I wasnt expecting what happened to him either! This story is getting more and more sad.... So far, I don't know how the relationship will turn out between Mariam and Laila but I do like how the author has placed them together in the story!

message 21: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Wamsley | 52 comments I was shocked too. I was hoping Laila would be one of the lucky ones, but then everything came falling down around her. I think the most heartbreaking thing is that both of them were just kids when things went so wrong for them.

Ok, I am so behind on this book it's crazy! I have been really busy at work, and haven't been feeling great! So, I just read how they tried to escape, and was brought back home. What he did to them! OMG! How terrible, why won't they kill him! I hope to finish this today or tomorrow!

message 23: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Wamsley | 52 comments Yeah, I thought for sure they would get away and when they didn't I was deflated. I was so afraid the little girl was going to die.

message 24: by Liza (new)

Liza | 35 comments I finally cleaned my palette of books started in June. I have just started this book. Hope to add my two cents by the end of the month.

I never read one book at a time.

Ok! Great we would love to hear your thoughts on this one!

I can only handle one book at a time! - I am normally a pretty slow reader, but i get really excited when i finish a book!

message 26: by Liza (new)

Liza | 35 comments SO I finished part 1 (half way thru part 2). I feel sorry for Miriam, to be born out of wedlock and have a father whom I feel would have wanted her to be a part of his family if not for custom. Her mother committing suicide showed Miriam that she truly believed that without Miriam, she had no life. I see how her mom could feel this way.

As for Miriam's husband, considering the custom and circumstance, he appeared to be a decent man. Until Miriam had too many miscarriages and he became mean. Him making her chew pebbles and breaking her teeth was wrong and also reminds the reader that the women were not people but property.

I like your part-way through review! And this was truly a sad store! I really hated her husband!

message 28: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Wamsley | 52 comments Yeah, that part with the rocks upset me too. I kinda got sick to my stomach. He was a very two-faced man.

message 29: by Liza (new)

Liza | 35 comments I finished Laila's part (2). She had a pretty good upbringing/life until her family was blown up. Then Rasheed, her savior, came along SMH. That evil man. Just because they are your "property" doesn't mean you have to treat them worse than you'd treat a dog.

I am now halfway through part 3.
