Too many people underestimated his fighting ability.

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Hah, I love that one :) So true.
I borrowed an edition of Sherlock Holmes from the library a while back, and I think it included the Sidney Paget illustrations ... they were amazing. How do you choose just one?!?

David (dvader) | 13 comments I hear ya...I should say that this illustration was from the Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist.

Maybe I'll create a Sidney Paget Sherlock Holmes illustration quiz.

I especially like the first one because it's just so Holmes-y. Ya know? Just the way he's leaning back thoughtfully, eyes closed in calm concentration, hands clasped in front of him. I just love him.

Mel. If you like that, then you'll love this one.

description

“What a lovely thing a rose is!... Our highest assurance of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers.”

Later on..."Do you see any prospects of solving this mystery, Mr. Holmes?"
"Oh the mystery!" he answered, coming back with a start to the realities of life.

The Jeremy Brett version was spot on with this scene as you would expect.

Ooh yes, another good one! I love the way he signs them. That little S.P always in the corner. His handwriting reminds me of letters carved on a stone wall or something.
