Well done Geoff!

The 39 Steps is a good movie, if you can find it. Need I say anything about Wuthering Heights! Nice to see a guy reading Emily Bronte:)

Finished it last night, so now I feel like I can genuinely encourage you to keep pushing on - it's worth it! Now I can't wait to get my hands on more David Mitchell.

I read it a couple of times as a teenager - really enjoyed it. Might be time to dip my toes in again?

Kim Marie | 894 comments I'm starting late to this challenge but have only picked up my copy of The Silver Linings Playbook from the library today. It doesn't look very lengthy so I should be able to have it finished by the end of the month :)

I read it first in my early twenties and even now, twenty years on, I still feel like I'm reading it for the first time. Go on, read it again:)

message 209: by Trina (new)

Trina (trina88) Finished my reread of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets so that's another knocked over for this challenge.

Well done Trina:)

message 211: by Trina (new)

Trina (trina88) I don't think I'll get through Cloud Atlas. At the moment I'm really only reading it on my lunch breaks at work, and reading other books at home. But I definitely will finish it at some point.

Jackmeister | 713 comments I've read my book into movie, City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, I gave it 4 stars, I liked it, the start of what looks to be like a good series.

It is a pretty good series but I don't think the later books are quite good as the first one

I haven't read the book but I loved the DVD. Hope you do. With your five ★ rating, I will definitely read this one now. Thanks.

Nicola | 1161 comments I'm over half way through Atlas Shrugged / Ayn Rand and am loving it! But as I've said before it's a long read and quite heavy. So haven't finished it but should have it knocked off by the weekend...

I am terrified to read that because of the damage it is sure to do on my wrists. Thing weighs like two kilos.

Lol.... My main problem is that it is the small paperpack and small writing... I haven't changed my glasses yet and this book proves I need to! But it's a great read anyway and I'm so glad a friend gave it to me

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) My copy is 1200 pages long I think - would probably be the longest thing I've ever read, and probably take me a good 2 weeks. I don't read long books very effectively. :P

Ashleigh wrote: "I would sit at a table when I read that."

I would say that is a good idea.

That's enough to put me off! That's the equivalent of 3.5 books for me;)

I have had that on my TBR for a while now Nicola but find that it's just way too long to fit into any of these challenges. It would definitely be the equivalent of 2-3 books. Maybe you can count it as such??? Lol. My husband read it and loved it so I will get around to it at some stage. Just not when I'm doing a challenge!! Good on you for giving it a go and I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Yeah that's the main reason I still haven't gotten around to it.

Okay - so it's a long book. But is it any good?

message 228: by Donna R (new)

Donna R (goodreadscomuser_ainsco) Barabbas by Pär Lagerkvist Barabbas by Pär Lagerkvist ★★★★

Squeezed in one more for my 'Season Anthony'! It seems to me I have a reading buddy, almost like listening to an audiobook - I can hear and see him as the various characters. Can't stop now and have started a personal challenge for all things Anthony. Will he be an Inuit, the Pope, Gaugain, Henry II ..... Can't wait.

Oh and before I forget - I enjoyed the book!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Phrynne wrote: "Okay - so it's a long book. But is it any good?"

I'm mainly interested because it was the inspiration for one of my favourite video games of all time, Bioshock. It has a tremendously good reputation, though.

Not really. I believe opinion is actually very divided.

message 231: by Grant (new)

Grant Dobson (quincetuple) I'm going to use this as a way to read one that's been on my shelf for a while unread, Sleepers by Lorenzo Carcaterra.

For anyone looking for a suggestion, one of my favorite books to movie title's is The Beach byAlex Garland :)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Well using Goodreads as the universal average, 150,000~ reviews resulting in a touch under 4/5. I'd say that's a good reputation considering the sample size.

Liam wrote: "Well using Goodreads as the universal average, 150,000~ reviews resulting in a touch under 4/5. I'd say that's a good reputation considering the sample size."

Sorry Liam. Misunderstanding. I didn't mean to debate the fact that it is a classic and lots of people like it. What I meant was that people have hugely different opinions of it. The people who don't like it REALLY don't like it. The reviews make very interesting reading and so far have not made me inclined to read it. So I was interested in what Nicole thought.

message 234: by Kim Marie (new)

Kim Marie | 894 comments I have to admit to being a bit disappointed with The Silver Linings Playbook as the main character has quite an obsession with an American football team (the Philadelphia Eagles), in which I have no interest at all. Perhaps the movie version will be more to my liking.

I'm really enjoying it! The only thing that is making it a long read for me is the small writing in my version and the fact I need new reading glasses!

The world of dystopian novels has always been divided, you either love it or hate it! There never seeems to be a middle view - I've jst reread Brave New Wrold for my bookclub and I was the only one who loved it - the others hated it and some couldn't even finish it and I think Atlas Shrugged is the same...

It's an interesting mix of the future while still referencing the 1930s world it was written in....

The movie is quite different to the book. I didn't think there to be many similarities at all.

I enjoyed the movie of The Silver Linings Playbook more than I liked the book. They changed a lot and left out a huge amount of the book which is usually a bad thing. In this case if you don't like football it is a good thing!!!

Sarah | 33 comments I almost got all the way through The Lord of the Rings this month. It's been a while since my last foray into Middle Earth so this really showed how much the movie versions had coloured my remembrance of the story... despite my best efforts to separate the two!
Still a favourite escape.
