Let's plan our Summer of Sherlock. I suggest we read Sherlock in order of publication. The starred ones are the novels.

*A Study in Scarlet, 108 pgs
*The Sign of Four, 129 pgs
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 448 pgs, 12 stories
The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, 321 pgs, 11 stories
*The Hound of the Baskervilles, 256 pgs
The Return of Sherlock Holmes, 474 pgs, 13 stories
*The Valley of Fear, 120 pgs
His Last Bow, 242 pgs, 8 stories
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, 303 pgs, 12 stories

What pace would you like to go? The novels are pretty short so we could get through them pretty quickly.

Here is a proposed reading schedule if we read all the books including novels and short stories. We can always make changes. I say we would start on Friday, the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere. This schedule goes up until the end of November.

June 21 - 30: A Study in Scarlet, 108 pgs, 10 days
July 1 – 10: The Sign of Four, 129 pgs, 10 days
July 11 – 31: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 448 pgs, 21 days
August 1 – 21: The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, 321 pgs, 11, 21 days
August 22 – Sept 11: The Hound of the Baskervilles, 256 pgs, 21 days
Sept 12 – Oct 6: The Return of Sherlock Holmes, 474 pgs, 25 days
Oct 7 – 16: The Valley of Fear, 120 pgs. 10 days
Oct 17 – Nov 6: His Last Bow, 242 pgs, 21 days
Nov 7 - 27: The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, 303 pgs, 15 days

Another option is just to read the novels.
June 21 – 30: A Study in Scarlet
July 1 – 10: The Sign of Four
July 11 – 31: The Hound of the Baskervilles
Aug 1 – 10: The Valley of Fear

What do you think? Any ideas or changes?

message 3: by Taylor (new)

Taylor I think we should go with the first proposal and read both novels and short stories.

message 4: by Pink (new)

Pink I don't mind either way, just novels or all books. I won't be re-reading, so I'll join in from The Sign of Four, which I can't wait to read!

message 5: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) I think we should do both in published order!

Amle | 28 comments I love Sherlock, so I'm happy to have an excuse to re-read the stories.
I was fortunate enough to find a collection with a few of them in French at a used-books market for a bargain price, so it will also be a nice opportunity to see how well they come off in the translation.
Count me in!

(Update: forgot to add that I'd be up for reading everything, novels and short stories, in order of publication.)

Catherine (yarnmama10) I also like the first proposal. I am excited to get started. :-)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments That first schedule sounds perfect. I'm excited!

message 11: by Taylor (new)

Taylor I just bought the Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes so I am very eager to begin :)

message 12: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Burnett | 4 comments I'm in on Holmes and Watson. Originally proposed schedule is good.

message 13: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments So we're starting A Study in Scarlet today?

message 14: by Eline (new)

Eline (elmare) I'm in too, and I like the first schedule as well. :) Might be a while before I get my hands on the books though. I'm moving houses and guess who just packed basically all her books down in cardboard boxes...

message 15: by Susan (new)

Susan Oleksiw | 119 comments I like the first schedule. I got the complete works years ago, so I'm ready (for once).

message 16: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (yarnmama10) I started A Study in Scarlet last night. Very readable so far. :-)

message 17: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Craig This a great idea! Thanks for starting the thread.

message 18: by Doreen (new)

Doreen | 5 comments This is great :) I have started reading Sherlock a while back and am happy to join a scheduled read. Am already a couple of stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and will be joining the discussions then, but looking forwards to your impressions and opinions to the first two novels, too.

message 19: by Ken (new)

Ken W I'm new to the group and Sherlock is definitely on my to-read list, not sure if I can catch up to you guys with all I'm already ready though! I do want to read them in order like you are doing though so I'm not going to skip to "Hound". We'll see how I do, I'll keep you informed.
