Chase turned over the leaf he was studying. There was something off about it, he just didn't know what."The veins look a like they have something in them that's not natural" he said under his breathe.
Chase had been rubbing his finger along the leaf but stopped when he saw someone not all that far away from him.It was the girl who'd been in the forest.
Chase didn't know whether to feel happy or annoyed. He ran a hand through his hair, making it stick up in places.
"Hey! Didn't I see you in the forest?"
She looked over at the guy, and them looked around to make sure he was talking to her. "Um, yes. I hit my head on a branch," she replied, skipping over.
"Uh-huh. I remember. Sorry about that" Chase said, raising an eyebrow at her skipping. She was a cute kid; he liked that she seemed carefree and happy. It was a stark contrast to how he usually felt.
"Studying this strawberry plant. Something is off about it. I think the chlorophyll is tainted. See how it's has a purple tinge to it?" Chase said, holding up the leaf of the plant for her to look at.The veins in the leaf did seem to have a bit of a purple color but nothing too obvious.
"Hmm. Odd," she noted, studying the leaf. "I'm not sure what to make of it though. Botany was never my strong suit."
"Yes well, I've always been interested in plants. Learning more about them in order to discover new ways to use them is my favorite thing to do" Chase exclaimed, letting go of the plant's leaf. And then he remembered that nothing really mattered anymore. Not since his dad had died."Well it used to be my favorite thing to do. Not so much now. I really don't even know why I'm studying this thing" he said, indicating the strawberry plant.
"It's not like there are any microscopes around here. And there's no point in studying it in the first place"
"I bet my aunt would beg to differ. She's a botanist at NYU, and she studies all sorts of plants like these. Are you a Demeter kid?"
"Demeter? Nope. I'm the son of one of the muses, Melpomene. Melpomene is the Muse of tragedy and all things drama" Chase said, sitting down on the ground for no particular reason. He didn't really feel like standing anymore."You've probably never heard of her. As far as I know, mom didn't have any other kids except Fionah and me"
"I've never met a Melpomene camper before, but I think I've heard of her. I know a lot of Greek myths. Even before I came to camp, I loved to read them. Now that I am a demigod I'm glad I know so much because I know most of the monsters that are out there and I would know what to do if, you know, I ever actually saw a monster."
"Oh wow. Well that's good. I don't really know much about the gods. There didn't seem to be any reason to learn more about them when I could be learning more about plants" Chase chuckled a bit at the last part."You probably think it's really weird that I like plants so much considering who my godly parent is"
"No, not really. I think it doesn't really matter who your godly parent is. It's who you are and what you like that counts. Like me. I'm a daughter of Athena, which tends to surprise a lot of people, but I like to talk a lot and gossip and other stuff. But I'm also smart."
Chase nodded slowly, agreeing with her. Gosh, this kid really was smart!"Huh. I've never thought of it like that" he said, looking her up and down. She looked pretty young, probably 14 or something. Her hair was shortish and stopped at her shoulders.
((Lol, looked at her profile :D ))
((Oh, for a second I thought you were psychic or something.))"Oh yeah, I'm very philosophical. You know in the half hour a day I act serious instead goofing around," she explained.
((Bwahaha))"Mhm"
Chase looked down and quickly drew in his breathe.
Half of the stem of the strawberry plant was black and looked burnt. Purple lines snaked and twisted around the base of the stem, pulsing a deep purple color.
"Me either" Chase whispered, staring at the plant with growing horror. It looked sick. He put his nose to hit and took a big whiff. The scent of rotting flesh filled his nose. Ugh! It didn't even smell normal!
"I don't know" Chase said, digging his fingers into the dirt around the plant. He grasped the base of the stem and started tugging lightly, trying to get the plant to come up along with it's roots. It went up with very little resistance and Chase gasped again, staring at the plant's roots.
The were glowing a purple color.
"Okay. Um... I can't think of scientific explanation for this so I'll just resort to irrational and magical possibilities. Someone put a spell on it?"
Chase studied the plant closely, turning it over in his hands. "I don't see any evidence of any spells. I don't know how to explain it exactly, but there's are lot of variables in this that don't add up. They just don't seem to point to a spell"
"Okay, then we can rule that out," she said, racking her brain for other solutions. "Um, it was growing right above a tank of some potion that seeped out."
((Huh? It is?!))"I don't know. I feel like I recognize this smell. For a while I was on Olympus with my mother and she had to strike a deal with the god of the dead. So we went down to Hades. All the vegetation growing there had a similar smell to this plant"
((I have no idea, I'm making stuff up like crazy. What did you have in mind?))"Well, the Underworld is under California so I don't know of its that. Maybe it's a message from Hades?"
((That it has something to do with the Underworld and there's some master plan or something, lol))"More like a warning" Chase said, fingering the plant. He picked it up and held it at arms length.
"I think I'll go take this to Chiron. Maybe he'll be able to figure out what's up with it"
Chase looked at her. He didn't see how she could help but it wasn't like he needed any help in the first place."I don't see why not. Follow me!"
And with that they both walked off.
((How about they go to the Big House. But could you be Chiron?))
((Sure. And I haven't read the books in forever so my Chiron impression would probably be just as bad. Idk, we'll see what happens I guess!))
she walked with Cody beside her, she wasn't usually a jealous person. but now? she was. she was extremely jealous of Lark, but as usual she wouldn't let it show
Cody sat down in between neat rows of strawberries. He picked one and ate it before offering another to Lace.
she took it and smiled taking a small bite of the yummy fruit "i agree... Magic food tastes much better than regular food" she says recalling what he had said in the dining pavilion
