My personal canon/interpretation is that Durc and his mate Ura who was also mixed (if he actually got to mate with her) would have to leave Broud's clan because if they had a child who didn't look completely clan he would order them to get rid of it. And maybe they would end up with the Lion Cave of the Mamutoi.
I love this fan fiction regarding Baby & Durc

Thanks for recommending that. It was great, I've never read that before.
Your very welcome. Thanks for telling me.

Thanks for that link. I like it all but especially last paragraph "...But I do not use the Internet, because I know myself too well. Once I got on the Internet I would get so distracted, I'd be basically giving one of my books to the Internet because I wouldn't be writing. I'd be playing on that machine."

How do you shelf it?
Oh you read it online (see msg 56) but if you want to document that you read it you can just pull the book up (msg 61) and change the green button to READ that will "shelf it".

I've read "Durc" by PeterLion and probably several of the fan fictions for that fandom on Fanfiction, net. Also you should check out the fan fiction section on the EC.fans.com message board. One of the best ones I've read on that site is about Durc and it's called "Song of the Grey Wolf" by BarbMc. It has a sequel called "Durc's Quest" which has Durc leaving the clan to find his mother.

Sorry this took so long. Computer problems. Try the following link:

Edit: I clicked on the link and it works. But the user has changed her forum name from BarbMc to Cap'n Gramma. But it's the same story. Let me know if it works.

There was not a third story in her series. That is correct. One of the best current stories on the ECfans.com forum now is Ayla's Clan by Bill S. It is currently on part 4. If you read it, you would have to read the first 3 parts first. But it's no problem because he has the links at the bottom of all of his posts in the signature line. A word of warning, it's very much an alternate universe story. It's a story where Ayla stays with the clan by refusing to acknowledge the death curse that Broud ordered.

I love this series, personally, but you can tell she was tir..."
Same. I was so disappointed in book six. I'll reread the others many times, but I'm never touching that one again.

There are many alternative fan fictions which pick up after Shelters of Stone, giving us the satisfying ending we all wanted: a plausible reunion of Ayla and Durc. Here's one I'm currently re-reading:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8663391/...
The writing is passable and the story in line with the earlier works of Auel.
I don't consider Painted Caves to be part of the series. The writing is not at all like the earlier books and the behavior of the main characters is completely unlike their previous personalities. Perhaps Auel was suffering from some age-related issues when it was written... or maybe someone else wrote the book. It doesn't matter to me-- Painted Caves is not part of the series in my mind. Once you read this and other alternative "book sixes", you will probably agree :).

No, Auel herself spoke of finality - Ayla hearing of Durc's progress while NEVER reuniting (as opposed to NOT reuniting which would leave open a seventh book chance to meet again) thus Durc's clan cannot directly connect with Ayla (future son finding half brother Durc, perhaps?)

actually that would suffice to allow Ayla to "hear of" without reuniting
I could envision a "NEXT GENERATION" SERIES (books 7-12?) which follows parallel stories of Durc and the son of Ayla and Jondalar
(would she name him with clan 2nd name? Creb maybe?) if called something like "Jon-Creb" ALL the generations after Bear Cave would remember a Mog-ur called Creb allowing all to make the connection to the ghost Ayla
but warning: Durc cannot move as west as "Jon-Creb" so its likely a reverse travel if they join

Even if Durc didn't believe Ayla died from the death curse (which he probably dead) he'd have no way of knowing where Ayla might have gone."
The Clan knows of the Others in the area, many of which have 1) met or have heard of Ayla, and 2) can either teach Durc their language (as he was demonstrated to be capable of it) and/or learned some Clan language from Ayla. Finding a trail of breadcrumbs wouldn't be the hardest part of re-uniting.
I imagine the Clan lived on with Broud as leader and Durc eventually mated Ura. Durc likely picked up a good amount of status through hunting prowess and general likability, but Broud would make a point of condemning any child Ura had as 'deformed.' After a couple instances of this, Durc eventually challenges Broud for leadership and succeeds.

the mythos says Durc has clan memories so as a mixed breed could easily have some sort of others memories that Ayala passed having learned then repressed after initial tragedy.
in this way Durc could possibly understand some simple words though speech could easily be "impossible" without practice with books 1-6 having taken a southern to north and eastern to the west direction, i see additional books retracing trail to find Durc the newest leader having out smarting his adversaries despite his handicap of inferior strength
