I don't recall. About 75 I think, a lot of which I had read 30-40 years ago. I had been reading other classics that somehow didn't make the list. But I'm very happy to have "met" many new authors who are on the list.
I think I had only read about 11 back in 2006 when I bought the first list book... I'm up to 213 now!
I started the list in late 2010 with only 10 books read. Now I'm currently reading my 100th list book!
I first came across the 2006 book at my brother's. I considered myself to be reasonably well-read and confidently guessed I had got about 200 in the bag already. I was disgusted to find I was only on about 45. I was determined to bump that up to 100 pretty quick and I haven't stopped finding wonderful things to read yet. Currently on 289 from the 2006 list with about another 20 from the later introductions.
Started the list last night, coming into it I've already read 39 books. Only 962 to go, lol.
About 90 when I checked in September. I'm now up to 142 so I've made good progress. I've re-read several books which I know I have read before but couldn't remember much about. Having a goal definitely helps, my reading has dramatically increased.

How many books had you read when you first started/heard of the list?
I do have to say that I am glad "Eline Vere" is on the list. I had to read that in school when I was 14, and I am glad that at least now it served a purpose (another "r" in the spreadsheet). God that was awful to get through at that age!
