Erik Curre (ecurre) | 19 comments That sounds nice Mehmet. Unfortunately I sleep on a futon (one consequence of living in Japan), which is not really conducive to pleasant reading in bed.

Mostly I read on the train during my commute to & from work. It's a long trip so gives me plenty of time to bond with my Kindle. I'm actually on the train right now as I type this comment.

message 102: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Erik i also use to read on the train during my studies at uni. I got a car now and less reason to use trains, but when i do i still make sure i bring my book. I also have a kindle Erik, on my holiday to Hong Kong this year i brought it with me. Found it way useful as did not have to carry loads of books in my suitcase. I read one Japanese horror book before Erik called Audition, translated into english. Do lots of people read on the trains in Tokoyo ?

message 103: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) My favorite time to read is definitely in the morning. I know it sounds weird, but I am a morning person. As far as place goes, I like to be curled up in my bed or out on the back porch with some coffee!

message 104: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments That is not weird at all Jess. When i wake up early and got enough time i find it nice and relaxing to read also. Just i am more of a night person and do most of my reading at night.

I agree, having a Kindle makes vacations so much easier! Especially when you're reading something that would be quite thick and heavy to lug around in physical form. Only downside: I'm afraid to use it when relaxing by the hotel pool because I'm paranoid about it suffering water damage.

Tons of people read on the train in Tokyo. Look around any given train car during rush hour and you'll see people with their noses buried in books, newspapers, e-book readers, portable video game systems, and cell-phone screens. It's pretty much the accepted way to pass time on a train. Rush hour can get so crowded that it's nice to have some form of escapism so you can temporarily forget how many warm bodies are packed in around you.

Felipe Gálvez Valenzuela (er_felipe) | 20 comments Does anyone know some sort of music/composers for reading? I love to read outside so i can hear sounds of "nature" (I live in the city :/ )but when the night comes... I have to do it inside. Maybe some of you have some suggestions.

message 107: by ZoeyBB (new)

ZoeyBB (sjnovak3) | 95 comments Here. Now.

I guess I don't have a lot of requirements. :P

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) My favourite place to read is in a moving vehicle. I find the motion of the car relaxing, and can easily become absorbed in my book. I also like to read in my gliding chair in front of the fireplace, in a bubble bath, out back on a blanket spread on the grass, or propped up in bed before settling in to sleep.

message 109: by [deleted user] (new)

My favorite place to read my Kindle, is in bed. However, my cat, who sleeps with me, doesn't like it at all, and sits on my arm, so I can't hold the Kindle! He think beds are for sleeping, not reading! :)

message 110: by Perry (new)

Perry Lake | 335 comments Horror must be read at night, if at all possible.

message 111: by Marie (new)

Marie | 4030 comments I like to get comfortable in my recliner and turn all the lights off while reading a horror novel on my kindle. It has to be quiet in the house as I need the atmosphere to get me in the mood for some spooky reading.

message 112: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments I have a recliner also Maria. It is a great chair to read on, but my problem is I tend to read at night. So currently i love to tuck up in bed and read my book, to help me unwind after a hard day working

message 113: by Troy (new)

Troy (robotroym) I like to read laying on my sofa or in bed. I usually end my night with reading for an hour or two on the sofa before heading to bed to read for another hour until I can no longer keep my eyes open. Storms are perfect for spooky stories.

message 114: by DeAnna (new)

DeAnna (deannaparamo) Any time of day and the location in the house varies. Could be in my office, living room or in bed. However, if it's horror, I prefer it at night in bed.

message 115: by Erin (new)

Erin (ems84) | 9075 comments If I am reading at home it's usually in bed. At work before I go in and during lunch it's in my car.

message 116: by Steve (new)

Steve Parcell | 912 comments On the train to and from work. Headphones on so I don't get disturbed by mobile phone shouters!

message 117: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis I like to wake up early and read in bed while everyone else is asleep. I also like to read on the weekend on the couch when it is a cold, rainy day (not many of those though, I am in San Diego).

I always have an audible book going too and I only listen to that when I am on elipitcal at the gym. So it is easy to see if I am loving the book because I don't want to get off!

message 118: by Kelly B (new)

Kelly B (kellybey) | 630 comments Late at night, after every one else has gone to bed! I like to read on the living room couch, with both cats by my side. A bag of some sort of candy usually helps, too;-).

message 119: by JL (new)

JL Shioshita (uberproductions) | 149 comments When I was a teenager it was In the bathtub because it was quiet and relaxing...but don't really have time for that anymore so late at night when it's almost as quiet and almost as relaxing.

message 120: by T.W. (new)

T.W. Faison (goodreadscomtwfaison) | 56 comments Hmmm, I like to pull out a good book of Lovecraft stories on my bed, specifically after a long night of writing. It just helps ease my mind away from getting obsessive and neurotic and keeping myself up far later than what is usually an ungodly hour already. However, if I'm reading a Hannibal Lector book, I either want to listen to it on Audible while on a jog or painting a fence (I work on a ranch occasionally), or I want to read it in broad daylight because it's just one of those books that is far more terrifying in bright lighting. After all Hannibal doesn't hide in the night, he hides behind a well crafted person suit while playing the harpsichord and slowly dissecting the human mind.

Jazmin | 25 comments At night in a nook built out of fluffy pillows on my bed surrounding like a private fortress, coffee mug a stretch away, and staying up as late as 3:30 am on a workday feeling like I got away with doing something sneaky just by staying up so late book in hand....

Daniel Barnett | 239 comments Coffee shop and lots of coffee. It might be the best thing in the world.

message 124: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments I enjoy reading around midnight in my room. Total peace and quiet.

message 125: by David (new)

David (arsenicpirate) | 1 comments I like to get as many pages in as I can on my lunch break. I roll up all my breaks into one long hour and just let the stress of the workday melt away. Then on the weekends I sit on my balcony with some coffee or a drink, by my potted plants and my windchime, cars whisking by in hushed sussurus on the street below.

message 126: by Maxine (new)

Maxine (Booklover Catlady) (booklovercatlady) | 42 comments I usually start reading about 11pm and will be reading to 4am. It's my favourite time to read, when the house is quiet and it's just me lost in my books.

I'm fortunate that running my own business from home I can sleep in a bit otherwise I'd be the walking dead. I'm trying to do more daytime reading again.

message 127: by Angel (new)

Angel | 48 comments I read in the living room whenever I can, which is when I'm able to squeeze it in and it's finally quiet.

Baz MW (bazcatt) My partner and I just bought our first house (an old Queenslander with beautiful timber floors and high ceilings). We've deck our study out with 2 big dark wooden bookcases and a big beautiful dark wooden desk and cushy reading chair. It never gets cold enough here to warrant a fireplace, so I put my favourite dim lamp on and favourite fireplace YouTube video and settle in with a glass of red :)

I'd love to be able to read these hours, sounds amazing! Unfortunately even on weekends I can't sleep in past 6:30 haha

wow, so many of you read late into the night. I'd be asleep within minutes of trying this. I can't stay awake much after 10pm, but then I'm usually awake around 5:30 or 6:00am.

message 133: by Troy (last edited Apr 20, 2017 10:31AM) (new)

Troy (robotroym) Living room couch starting between 7-9 pm, then I move to the bedroom and read until I can't keep my eyes open any longer. I'll often read in the dark by only my Kindle light.

message 134: by Baz (new)

Baz MW (bazcatt) We just achieved the first cold(ish) day of the year here. I've got to say, I definitely prefer reading on cold nights (particularly given the genre we all love so much).

Deranged Hermit | 2 comments Weekdays from 10 pm to about 5 am.

I prefer a warm bath by candlelight. The dripping of water and moving shadows adds to the atmosphere of horror novels.

Mikhail G (mikhailg) | 24 comments Hi! New to the Group (this is the third discussion I'm joining in this Group so will stop posting that intro from now on :-P).

I find that music helps me get into the mood of reading. And what works best for me is to create a short playlist (5 songs or less) and listen to it on repeat the entire time I'm reading a horror novel. I do this because I often have 3 or 5 books on the go (across genres) and occasionally take a 1/2 year break before coming back and finishing a book.

My short playlist-on-repeat trick works to help me get back in the mental mode of reading a book I've put down. As soon as I hear the opening track (e.g. Nine Inch Nail's The Day The World Went Away https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nmrgN4F...), I'm right back where I was when I first started reading that particular book.

Anyone else do this?

I can't believe you listen to NIN while reading haha.
I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to getting distracted while reading with music on. I can do classical or lounge or house but it can't have lyrics or it throws me off. (Same when I'm in the quiet carriage in the train and someone gets on and starts yacking away on their phone).
In summer, if there's not already a storm going on I'll put an 8 hour storm loop on YouTube
Coming into winter now though I've changed over to an 8 hour crackling fireplace loop haha

That sounds great Baz but at the risk of sounding like a doctor (which I am not) I would recommend a brighter light ;D

Just reading this thread makes me feel cozy and ready to read.. for the past few months I've actually enjoyed reading in my kitchen on weekends if Im cooking one of those 8 hour meals that bubbles away in the oven or the stove, its warm and cozy and it's just me and my book :)

Haha, that's so funny! I would never do that, but I am absolutely sure it works to remember the book you are/were reading!
I ALWAYS listen to music while reading (while doing anything, actually, but reading in particular)! Mostly the music I always listen to ( I have a broad music interest, so that's a lot of songs), but sometimes classical (Schubert is the best!) if I have to concentrate a lot on what I read.

Marie | 4030 comments Well I found this one in the archives as well which started back in 2013 and no one has posted in here since 2017. We have tons of new members since 2017 so pulling this one back out. I posted in here in 2017 as well.

I am still reading late at night, but now if I wake up in the middle of the night then I just pull out my book to read if my insomnia kicks in.

So what about everyone else - when is your favorite time to read?

message 143: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments I posted on this thread way back in 2017 also !!!! Not changed my place of reading. Still love to read in bed just before I sleep. The other night we had thunder storms and I was tucked up nice and comfortable reading. Pure bliss.

message 147: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Lots has happened in my life between the time I started this discussion. The only thing I have kept the same is my habit of reading at night. I stopped the reading in the morning as changed job. Also lock down has changed me and my wife's lifestyle. So instead of reading on my own during the day if I am free, I sometimes read next to her while she works on her computer.
So to sum it up night time in bed is still my favourite.

Afternoons. I have most of the necessary work for the day done, dinner is still hours away, and I have time just for myself. I curl up in my favorite chair, have a beverage nearby, and dig into a book.
My problem is I have a hard time sitting still for long. So I take small breaks to get up and walk around. Not so bad though, it lets me think about what I was reading and process it.

message 150: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments That is good WendyB, this is better then rushing through a book and not taking the story in. Reading is about enjoying and relaxing the book.
