Karin | 629 comments I just read a graphic nonfiction history, Wake The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts by Rebecca Hall where a scholar had to dig deep to find any mentions of women led slave revolts.

Matthew McElroy | 51 comments On the train to New York, reading The Winter of Our Discontent. it is good, not great.
At home, I have a copy of "The Boys of Dunbar", a true story about a high school basketball team from Baltimore that had six players make the NBA.

Lenaya Fallin (lenaya_fallin) | 1 comments I just finished A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow which was awesome.
And am currently in the middle of The Blood Trials by N.E. Davenport, which I don’t love as much. But is still pretty good.

D.T. | 19 comments Blood at the Root by LaDarrion Williams The author expressed his desire to create a book targeted toward young black male readers because they lack books made with them in mind. I can definitely see that

Matthew McElroy | 51 comments How the Word is passed by Clint Smith. It's a well-written book about how the United States has failed to acknowledge or remediate the harm created by enslavement. In many places, we have done more to provide consolation to literal traitors than the Black people who created the wealth of the nation.

Matthew McElroy | 51 comments I finished Song Yet Sung, by James McBride, yesterday. It was amazing. I'm going to continue pushing through The Book of Disquiet by Pessoa for a bit.

I have a few books reserved at the library for tomorrow.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Song Yet Sung is my favorite book by McBride. It is masterfully written. I’m still reading the wake of the wind, an excellent book by J. California Cooper.

Same here! I just recommended it to someone last week.

Karin | 629 comments I just reread Everything, Everything and also read a Jamaican-Canadian novel I didn't like called Brown Girl in the Ring--I hadn't realized it was shelved horror and paranormal (I only saw the magical realism and a few other things).

However, if you like dark speculative fiction, you might like Brown Girl in the Ring which is primarily written in Jamaican English and the author was born in Jamaica (not sure when she and her family moved to Canada.)

message 1832: by Matthew (new)

Matthew McElroy | 51 comments I'm going to check out both of those- Wake of the Wind and Brown Girl in the Ring. My summer reading list continues to grow.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I believe you will enjoy The Wake of the Wind.
I am also reading the Slightly series by Mary Balogh. First I was watching Bridgerton on Netflix which reminded me of the regency romances I read a long time ago so I am rereading them now. They are a lot of fun.

message 1835: by Sarah-Hope (new)

Sarah-Hope | 22 comments Finished House of Shades. I was impressed by Lianne Dillsworth's 2020 debut novel, Theatre of Marvels, and House of Shades is, if anything, ever better than the first. Both novels take place in Victorian London and examine life from the point of view of Black women.

message 1836: by Sarah-Hope (new)

Sarah-Hope | 22 comments Hall of Mirrors id a mystery set in 1950s Washington, D.C., featuring two mixed-race gay couples: one female, one male. The author parcels out information a little at a time, creating tension among the characters because some of them know more about what's going on than others.

Karin | 629 comments I just finished a well written memoir, All Who Believed: A Memoir of Life in the Twelve Tribes
All Who Believed A Memoir of Life in the Twelve Tribes by Tamara Mathieu here's my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've visited this group (long story) and even met a couple of black members, which is rather disturbing when you read what she says about their doctrine about blacks who aren't part of their group! To be fair, that is barely touched on in this memoir, but I'm posting the link in case anyone here has heard of them.

Dosha--they have several locations right in our state!

I have started a couple others but have focused on Babylon because it’s been 3 1/2 months since we chose this book. I need to finish it before the end of July!

Angel | 490 comments @Dosha, Yes! I am up to the part where Safiya and her mother took the trip to Washington DC and Nee York and they are with her Auntie. Safiya has a revealing moment of clarity, that her Father’s influence is ingrained in her. Her mother and her auntie are beautiful souls. I am so grateful to her mother for not leaving when she did attempt to walk out. I am about 70% completed. I hope by the end of the week to finish it. I work all week though so my reading will be in between shifts.
