Steelheart

I love comic books. Yes, I'm 34 years old. This book is like a comic book, but better. And cheaper in terms of dollars per minute."

Good to know I was thinking of giving this book to my grandson who enjoys comic books.

Londa, what do you think of the book theif? I am considering that book for the next couple of months.

message 108: by Londa (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Beverly.. I enjoyed it until about the 50% mark, then I started to get bored waiting for the sinister element to show up. I'll let you know if the last 25% of the book makes it all worth it.

Kisha.. I love the Book Thief! I am sitting at a 4.5 right now. It definitely lives up to all the hype. I will probably finish next week for a final review.

Cinzia | 5 comments I'm finishing Jimmie Barnes Kindle Edition . I got it free on Amazon! I must say that it's really an amazing book. Jimmie Barnes is a 130 years old slave that has been fighting all his life to get back the 40 acres which were given to his father at the end of the Civil War. He meets presidents, corrupted politicians, people who want to destroy him and people who love him.
The book also introduces the idea of a 'Black Holocaust' ... a now concept for me I must say but I find it really intriguing! I'd like to discuss it with my classes at school. Do you know anything else about it that can help me?

I gave The Thirteenth Tale 3 ***
I enjoyed it, but the main character really irritated me. Didn't find her 'driving motivation/tragic backstory' all that compelling or believable. A lot of people really loved it though. For me, I think I am done with Setterfield.

Gone Girl byGillian Flynn and I can't believe it's taken me so long to get serious about this book. I don't know how many times I've started and always put it down by or before page 60! The twists and turns omg so overwhelming (in a good way).

message 117: by Momreadstoomuch (new)

Momreadstoomuch | 6 comments Gone Girl made me realize that I can not like any of the characters of a book a still love a book. I like her style of having these horrible characters tell you a story. I have The Night Women on my to read list. So many good ideas on this blog.

You know, I listened to The Book Thief on audio. I think it would make a big difference. The narrator was good and made 'Death' come to life ;)

I didn't like his voice for Liesel, but it wasn't a deal breaker.

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Pushing through The Good Lord Bird. The 'western' dialect is not a fave of mine, but 'a little birdie' told me that Part 2 really picks up. Going to try and finish it this weekend

Just started Eye Spy. Proving to be a creepy weird read. Just the way I like 'em

Just finished The Golem and the Jinni and immediately added it to my favorites list. Loved it and am sad it's over.

I just thought about it, but I imagine all the German words and phrases might slow you down too. Thanks to the narrator, I know how to say several swear words in perfect German. LOL

message 131: by kisha, The Clean Up Lady (new)

kisha | 3909 comments Mod
Yes! The German is hard to follow. It's just gonna be a slow read so audio would likely speed it up a bit.

Slavery's Exiles: The Story of the American Maroons by Sylviane A. Diouf - learning about a part of (Black) American history that has not been much of a focus.

Lulu, I'm with you. I'm not good at it. I always end up neglecting the ones that are less interesting. But I'm gonna try because I've committed myself to way too many books for February lol.

Lee if you don't get pass that 10% lol. It's a slow read for about the first half of the book but then it picks up tremendously from there. It took me two weeks to read it.

message 141: by Lee (new)

It works best for me if the books are not in the same genre or are different in some way.

And once you get use to 2 books than you can move on to 3 at the same time :)

Worthy Brown's Daughter is also at the top of my list. I saw there was an author's profile in PW about the research he did for this book as it is based on a true court case and revolves around race relations in 19th century Oregon.
