That's really dramatic. She did have a pretty bad experience with the troop in her area.

But I was a girl scout and had a really good experience too.

Félix (habitseven) Scouty goodness.

message 55: by Clackamas (new)

Clackamas | 17 comments Lol. I didn't start out to trash Girl Scouts. I also didn't tell anyone to quit. I said they weren't equivalent organizations. In my experience, they haven't been. If that's just my region, then that's fantastic. I'm glad to know that it was local policy, not institutional.

Still, my Gold Star didn't have the bearing on scholarship opportunities that the Eagle did for my male peers, nor did it do any good on my resume when I was younger ... while I have seen favorable hiring decisions made for Eagles. So regardless of how awesome Girl Scouts might be, to most of the public (at least in my region) they're nothing more than the kids you have to dodge on your way into the grocery store to avoid buying cookies. And you don't HEAR about teens still being involved in Girl Scouts, or about their major projects the way you do the boys working on their Eagles.

message 56: by Clackamas (new)

Clackamas | 17 comments It's a back woods mentality, but people often have their boys join scouts for the strong male role models. If they believe they aren't getting that, they quit. They take their kids out of scouts due to things like female leaders. They have their kids change schools or classes due to SUSPECTED homosexuality of teachers or coaches. People changed religions when the Methodist Church publicly declared that it supports homosexual members and clergy.

This is our world. It is changing. It is actually changing more rapidly than ever. The fact that the leadership of BSA felt that it was necessary to vote on this issue at all shows that it's changing. Our country's laws don't even reflect equality yet. Why do you expect the BSA to?

I really do want an answer to that. Why do you expect that an organization as large as BSA should change their rules before society as a whole? Particularly when so much of rural America prefers things stay the same?

You are not addressing the inequality of Boy and Girl scouts, Clakamas. What you are talking about is SEXISM. Boys get treated better than girls not because they are scouts, because they are MALE.

Jammies Carol, thank you for posting that, although I see the BSA still stands for BullShit Apology...

message 72: by Clackamas (new)

Clackamas | 17 comments This is a private message I was sent:

"As an Eagle, I figure I should weigh in.

The BSA is founded on some pretty hefty principles. Trustworthyness, Helpfulness, Bravery, and Honor. To that end, the idea that we, as an organization, would exclude a fraction of the populace because of their sexuality, violates that concept of Honor. While honor isn't mentioned anywhere in the Oath, Law, Motto, or Slogan, it is an inherent concept of what scouting is. The whole idea behind scouting is that as a program is takes young boys and gives them the tools and knowledge to become good men. If one of those tools is a refusal to deal with homosexuality in an accepting manner, then we are failing to make those young boys fully into good men.

Further, it's not a matter of "rural" at all. Fully 75% of Boy Scouts come from suburban or urban areas. The reason that the decision was made was a purely fiscal one. The Morman Church, Catholic Church, and Methodist Church are the three largest contributors to scouting, and if the decision had gone the other way, the reality that those churches would pull their funding on religious principles would come true, and scouting would wither and die.

Also, I have to disagree in the most strenuous manner in the small town misconception that a gay man cannot adequately teach a young boy to be a good man or cannot be a strong male role model. That is a slap in the face to the many gay men who I know and work with, who are good men themselves. And while the argument over allowing women into scouting (they already are, in a limited fashion, though the Venture program) still rages on, the Girl Scouts of America still thrives, albeit not in a manner as well known as the Boy Scouts (this is in part to prior decades of societal sexism, and the fact that the GSA is not self-insured like the BSA is, and their insurance companies have limited the activities they can engage in)."

Between that and BunWat's most recent response, I think I've got it. Thanks.

It probably doesn't need to be remarked on further. She can clarify if she wants, or we can hope that it wasn't an issue to begin with.

Oh.....so many questions.

Why is potpourri in a Tupperware? Why is it moist? Why would it be handled roughly? What does this have to do with an Eagle Badge? Is it because Girl Scouts are tasked with making potpourri at meetings?

Clackamas | 17 comments Lol. This is what happens when I have to work a bunch and can't check in on Goodreads!

For clarification: We occasional contributors and lurkers do still pay attention but have our own reasons not to post publicly on controversial issues. The gentleman who messaged me was fine with having his contribution out there, just not his name. And I appreciate him for it. As I appreciate those of you who politely tried to help me understand.

As for my name: Blame my dad.... I like it now, but it was not fun growing up in Clackamas County next to the Clackamas River, near the Clackamas Mall, with kids who knew I was named for dad's work place. *grin*
