Livi Best (ol040388) | 11 comments Personally, as an author, I write what I know. Or, at least, what I think I know ;)
I grew up in NYC with a stint in Paris, so all of my published books and works-in-progress take place in those settings. I've grown up with fashion and did some work in the modelling industry, so those are common elements in my books. From my experiences, I've encountered my fair share of crazies/delinquents/trust funders/what have you, so they all definitely lend elements to my characters.

What do you all like to read/write about?

I find it very interesting that many romance authors are from the South and that a large majority of recent releases from that genre are based there. Reading them allows me to feel like I'm actually there, though I've only been to a few major cities in those areas!

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 1260 comments Personally I like to read about all sorts of different people and places. I just like them to have a sense of place so I feel I understand the context, but not to be so entrenched in that world that it's inaccessible to me.
I'll read the odd book with billionaires, movie/rock stars, sports players etc. but not too many because I can't relate to the world they live in. I also suspect the author can't either which puts me off.
If I'm going to read about a group of people or a location I know nothing about I have to believe the author knows it intimately.
If the author is good they'll take me there with them!

I don't know, I think I find it easier to answer what I don't like reading about than what I do!

Lila Veen (lilaveen) | 2 comments Interesting question, though very broad.

I like to read books with some element of mystery and/or magic involved. I used to read a lot of sci-fi, not as much fantasy. I love settings of all kind. I'm a Chicago native, so it's cool to see books based here where I know exactly what they're talking about, but I also love books in settings I'm unfamiliar with, like New Orleans or Australia.

I love family sagas, and I tend to write in that direction. I don't really care as much about the economic background of characters. If they are wealthy, it makes it very easy to write crazy scenarios but creates less conflict.
