Yes! I'm from Ithaca as well! Sorry you'll be leaving it Tahleen but congrats on graduating, where to next?
As far as I know, Wegmans is a northeast store, they are great, but expensive.
Are you going to the Friends of the Library book sale before you go? Now *that's* my Ithaca addiction!

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) Hi Carolyn,

Welcome to the group!!!

So, glad we don't have a Wegmans here...I'd be in BIG trouble...LOL

Jean | 17 comments Hi all. I'm Jean and I've never stopped reading YA fiction despite the fact that I had my 50th birthday a couple of months ago. I'm based in Hong Kong, which can make getting the books I want a bit problematic. Local bookshops will carry the latest, most mainstream stuff, but relatively restricted range compared to the UK. I always come back from overseas trips with a suitcase bulging with books.

Yes, I could order through e.g. Amazon, but the postage more than doubles the cost of the books. Ouch.

Looking forward to getting to know the group.

Welcome Jean! I worked at a bookstore for a long time and I heard that a lot from customers. They would spend hundreds of dollars on books to bring back, or ship it themselves. It's a shame the costs are so high through distributors. What about something like eBay? A lot of people are willing to ship worldwide, and the costs for mailing books are usually relatively low. Not to mention you can find some great deals.

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments Hi Jean and welcome...I too live in an Asian country, but my problem is that they usually get things way later than America or the UK...especially with ya books...I'm excited to go back home to Southern California later this month to get some books (oh yeah and also to see my siblings, niece, and nephews)

Hello, My name is Ashley and I live in Washington. I'm a reading specialist and I really enjoy reading children's and young adult literature. I'm looking forward to reading some good books and having good discussions :)

message 259: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Welcome, Ashley, feel free to join in any of our discussions, or come up with something new. We're a friendly group here at Wild Things.

message 260: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments Alexis, thanks! And no, I will still be working at B&N, just the one in my hometown. I've been at that one longer anyway, and plus it's super huge. We're in the top ten stores in the country or something.

And Jennifer, it's awesome that you're from Ithaca! I actually went to the Friends of the Library book sale today haha... I introduced it to my friend, who had never been and I was shocked to hear it. She loved it and we're going back a week from Monday, the day after we graduate. And when everything is like 50 cents except for trade paperbacks and hardcovers, which will only be $1.50. And about Wegmans, I've actually found it to be cheaper than grocery stores where I'm originally from in Massachusetts. So yet another reason for me to miss it.

www.betterworldbooks.com will ship worldwide for a flat rate of $3.97 per book.... I don't know if that's any cheaper...

Cool, I'm glad you're able to transfer. I think my store was in the top five before the building's decrepit old landlord jacked up the rent by 600% and we had to close it.

$3.97 shipping per book sounds pretty reasonable, since that's what Amazon charges for shipping on used books.

message 267: by Jean (new)

Jean | 17 comments Thanks Sara TX. $3.97 sounds like a great deal. Amazon is $4.99 per book plus $4.99 per order - so $9.98 just for postage if I order just one book. Amazon UK is even higher. I'll follow it up.

There's a HK based online store too - I've just ordered some YA stuff from them, spurred on by this group. Could take a month or more though.

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Hello everyone...I've been in the group for a while now but haven't really introduced myself.

My name is Jess and I'm from Pennsylvania. I'm a crazy busy college student (hence the delay on the intro!), but I'm a little kid at heart, which is why I was excited when Fiona invited me to this group! I love all kinds of books, but YA holds a special place for me :)

I can't wait to start chatting with you all!

They've been branching out, the last couple of years. We have two here in Northern Virginia, and apparently there are more on the way.

They aren't as expensive as some of the other stores we have down here (Whole Foods, etc.), but they are dangerous to me because they have such a huge variety of products, many of which aren't carried by the main grocery chains. Especially the ethnic food aisles! Mmmmmm...and their produce is fabulous! They have a fabulous bakery and the one closest to us has a large food court of ready to eat food, a huge case of already cooked food to take home (steaks, chickens, etc, restaurant-quality), and they also have a huge case of prepared but not cooked food (restaurant-quality dishes). My DH likes that one especially - he picks up something fancy and we have it on our good china for special events, he gets to say he 'made' dinner because he is actually cooking it himself. = )

I know what you mean. When my family and I lived in South Korea, we would buy books from Amazon, and to keep the shipping costs down, we would have them shipped surface-mail (i.e. by boat)... It took FOREVER to get them... 4 to 6 weeks sometimes!

I live in Manhattan, which supposedly has everything, but in order to get all the groceries I want I have to go to a whole bunch of different places. The value of large suburban grocery stores is not to be underrated!

Tanya Bea (tanyabeebooks) Hi everyone,

My name's Tanya, and I've been looking for a book club like this for a long time. I guess it goes without saying, but am a huge fan of YA (and kid lit), so much so that I'm even toying with the idea of starting a YA podcast -- an idea I got from another Good Reads book club I recently joined, The Sword and Laser, which I highly recommend to any Fantasy/SciFi lovers!!

The last YA novel I read was The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman, which I thought was beautiful...even if it did sort of rip my heart out. :)

I look forward to jumping into the new book in June and chatting more with all of you soon.

Take care,

Tanya

L.W. Patricks | 4 comments Hello everyone,

I introduced myself a while ago but I was tired and realized I had the communication skills of a chimpanzee. I thought I'd try again, this time with feeling =P

My name is L.W. Patricks and I’m the spawn of a typewriting chimp and a literary ninja, feeding on the souls of Unicorns to fuel my ideas. Okay, some of that maybe a lie, but really. I’m a fun and honest individual =). My current favorite books are the Book Thief by Markus Zusak, the Game of Thrones series, Life of Pi, and anything that’s different and outstanding.
I’m also an author; publishing in the genre I love of Young Adult. I’m ecstatic to be a part of this group and looking forward to adding a ton of books to my reading shelf. Feel free to add me as a friend and we can chat about anything from books to pandas to robot ninjas.
Seriously, no topic is taboo to me!

message 298: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Stultz (wicketwillowbean) | 1 comments My name is Elizabeth and I'm 24 years old. I live in Kentucky (Louisville, to be precise). I have a BA in psychology and did two minors in English with a concentration in literature and Medieval Studies. I studied French for 5 years and have experience with Japanese, German, and Latin. One of my dreams is to translate Medieval Latin and French manuscripts. The other is to eventually become an archaeologist.

Currently, I work with toddlers as a teacher in a daycare. It's not exactly my dream job, or the best use of my degree, but it works for now. I am going back to school in August to work towards a degree in education so that I can become a third grade teacher. I also plan on doing another major in either microbiology or anthropology. I do enjoy some aspects of my job such as being able to teach my children and the joy that I receive when they finally catch on to what I've taught them. I also enjoy the smiles, hugs, and kisses that I get from my kids when I come to work in the mornings.

I am an avid reader and have been since I was a child. I generally read anything except westerns, romance, and inspirational/Christian books. I quite enjoy horror, fantasy, historical fiction, and mysteries. I have also gotten into the Quirk classics recently. Right now, I am reading Android Karenina. Classic literature is another favorite of mine with Edgar Allan Poe, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, HP Lovecraft, Victor Hugo, and Gaston LeRoux being among my favorites.

I look forward to making new friends and taking part in book discussions.

-Elizabeth
