I would start at the beginning, because that's where a young Stephen King started. I have been reading his books in order all these years and always feel a little thrill when he mentions something that correlates to another of his stories.

I think you should read books according to your mood :) it works really well for me. You can hate/love a book according to that. I can't tell about specific order because I haven't read all King's books, maybe some experienced readers can give you a better advice in that matter. Anyways, I hope you enjoy all of them!

I'm with Angela. You'll appreciate the Layers and layers and connections more if you read them as King got them printed.

I am thoroughly enjoying all the responses! It is wonderful how King's books effect us all so differently and which are favorites or not. I am also one of those that votes for starting near the beginning. Carrie, It, the Stand, Pet Sematary, Salem etc. He has had a few that i was not as fond of but no matter what the characters will grab you.
Gerald's Game from your list. However, when you get them, #1 choice would be The Stand then It. Happy reading!

Reading in order seems like a good idea - carrie, salem's lot, the shining, the stand, the dead zone, firestarter, cujo. But when you get to dark tower, I think you should stay with it and read the whole series rather than have 8 books come between the first and the second installment. Maybe jump a few really important books ahead of it, like IT and MISERY, maybe even CHRISTINE.
