Outlander Series discussion
How did you find the Outlander Series?

Hmmm, I'd say I was just a little bit older then Molly when I read it for the first time. Though it was a big jump from her reading Twilight during the bus crash. It was a GREAT choice for Sam!

When I was stationed in Belgium I used to bring a book with me every day to work as I had to deliver things to generals and often had to wait for them to read what I had brought and then take it back to my office. One general (2-star, Air Force, male) would ask me each day what I was reading and we'd talk about books. When FC came out I bought it right away and was reading it as I waited for him to come in for the day. Come to find out he was a fan as well and had bought it too. Of course with him being a general he didn't have much time to read so each day I would ask how far in the story he was so I could talk about what he'd read without spoilers; I had read it all over the weekend. In all of this talking we got his aide reading the series also. Score another Outlander addict! I have since passed the book out to two other coworkers and got them hooked as well.
To answer the thread of the post...I got Voyager as one of the selections (9 for a penny) when starting a book club. When I got it I realized it was the third in a series. I kept it for another 6 years (moving it three time including overseas) before I found the first two at the library in Germany and decided to read them. So glad I kept it all that time.

Do you think I am hooked?? OH did I mention that I went to a book signing and meet Herself as well?

Not exciting or special but I do actually remember that fist time I held it very clearly.

Mary....lol! My Mom (age 82!) is also a huge fan of all of Diana Gabaldon's books including the Lord John series :D

Fast forward to 2011, and Barnes and Noble had a special offer for a romance novel, I had some time to kill and I got hooked on the genre, eventually realizing that Outlander was the genesis of time-travel romance. Read several other series, but was saving Outlander like a good glass of wine. One day, it was offered as a free ebook and I knew it was a sign. I still waited another couple of months, and then read the entire series through Echo in four months. Tonight is night five of going to bed without Jaime and Claire. The next book feels like a decade away.
This series tickles my intellect as well as satisfying the romantic side of me. My husband wonders why I suddenly want to visit Scotland. LOL

I've never been so affected/obssesed by an author in my life! I devoured the entire series in two months.
Am rereading Outlander now so I can move onto Dragonfly for the March discussion.

I'm just so glad to find this group since I don't know anyone in real life that has read this series (although I have recommended it to quite a few people).

There's a group read/re-read of Dragonfly in Amber that just started March 1st. If you're willing to back up a couple of books, come on in!
All my Outlander and Lord John books are Kindle. I first read most of them on my tiny Android screen using the Kindle reader. Recently, I purchased a Kindle Fire, and I'm loving it! But sometimes I wish I had a hard copy to hold in my hands... especially with the short stories and novellas that are published as part of other book anthologies. But I do love the portability of my Kindle and ebooks! Wherever I am, Outlander can be with me! :-)

As I have such a love of books and Scotland, I figured this would be the best of both worlds, and I ordered a copy from Amazon. I remember taking it out of the box and seeing the vibrant blue cover and remarking how beautiful the design was. I started it that afternoon, and read the whole thing within the next few days. I was completely hooked and in love with this story, the characters, and DG's great writing style.
By the time I went to Scotland later that year, I had gotten through Dragonfly and Voyager, so my visit to Culloden was quite the afternoon. Going through all of these sites that I had been so enthralled with before Outlander was now even more moving like the gorgeous Highlands in general, and a nice pint and haggis at The World's End in Edinburgh (I did not find Mr. Willoughby, though), to name just a few. Just too amazing for words.
I am about 100 pages from finishing Fiery Cross, and am looking forward to starting ABOSAA next. My original plan was to get through the series before any re-reads, but that never happened... I have read Outlander several times through, Dragonfly and Voyager twice... I just can't help it :)

My grandmother was an avid reader and she would go through a book a week or more. She past away a few years ago and when Im reading I feel closer to her. She gave me The Fiery Cross for my birthday one year :-) That was the last book I read because I just read too much of all of them lol
I can relate to the story because my family is from Wales and I have a welsh name. I also have red hair and I have a thing for rugged red hair men HAHA!
I just bought an ipad and on the way home from work I realised I can read the 'doorstop' books now wherever, whenever and not have to lug them around anymore!!! Hehe
A couple of years ago I was happy to go to one of Diana Gabaldon talk here in Sydney. She was amazing and really friendly. I would love to go to another one. I heard she is writing more......

What an excellent Grandmother! My Granny imparted the love of reading on me also. She is in her 90's now and is unable to read much now as the vision is going. I have a kindle and am so grateful to not have to lug around huge books anymore.

Awe… Silver, your post made me teary-eyed. Your mom sounds awesome.
I found the books when I googled, "Love stories like Twilight". The search came up with chat rooms, mostly of parents trying to find other similar books to keep their teenagers reading. Outlander kept being recommended, but the people always said they were a bit more "adult-themed" and had "overt sexuality". Therefore, I knew it was just what I was looking for!!!

Although, it is probaly good I am taking a break, my husband was really grumbling that i always had my nose in a book.
I just finished the 3 Fifty Shades of Grey books, those were good too.

My friend just asked me for another book like The Bronze Horseman (she's read Outlander and love it) and I said, "you and me both." haha! There is nothing like Jamie and Alexander. I've been looking but nothing comes close to those two, IMO.

I aggree. Those two series are the best. I did like the Tea Rose and esp. the Winter Rose. But the books were as well written. Still a good story tho. I honestly cant say that I havent found anything else that comes close!

The only thing that kept me from deleting them from my list of possible reads was the main character's name being the same as mine (though I use the Irish spelling). Thankfully this was enough to finally entice me to give them a try because they have become one of my favorite book series of all time. Now I just need to get a friend hooked so I can spend hours discussing the books with someone other than my poor boyfriend (who now knows every detail of Jamie and Claire's lives whether he cares to or not)

I introduced myself to a lady in a restaurant because she was sharing her Outlander books with her friend. Outlander bridges the gaps between people. haha!
