That is exactly my problem Eve! I am finding it a bit tedious and I cant wait to get to the good parts. You feel my pain :)
I do agree with you, Gabaldon is a genius.

That's what I said! Kevin McKidd is Totally Jamie. If you saw him in the HBO series "Rome", you'd absolutely fall for him as Jamie.

Oh yes, a mini series would be better - sort of like the Tudors - but the casting will make ALL the difference. I realize they could never pick actors that fit everyone's ideal, but I'd still watch it faithfully!!!! They could make the Nickleback song "I'd come for you" or "Never gonna be alone" the title track... everytime I hear it, I think of Jamie & Claire.

As an ex-nurse I would agree with you on that one. The medical detail is one of the appeals of reading the Outlander series. I often wondered how docs & nurses coped before antibiotics, syringes etc. The ideas that D.G has come up with for treatments are amazing. I thought the use of the rattle snake tooth as a needle was inspired.

Kevin McKidd... I forgot about him. I love him; he's on Grey's (which I watch faithfully) and he was on Maid of Honour. Wow, he isn't perfect, but he's big, hot and if he grew his hair out, he'd look pretty close to the part.

Bravo!

ChristinaRae | 295 comments So when you watched Maid of Honor (which I did, purely for Kevin McKidd and the Highlands) weren't you disgusted when the girl walked away from Hunky-Dashing-Scottish!-Red Head to have McLame-y-Man-slut-whose-one-redeeming-quality-is-that-he-shares-dessert?

I have a friend who is a McCloud and she said that the castle in that movie is 'hers' (her clan's). I think it was in some other Scottish movie too, but I can't think which one. Maybe Highlander?

The Geeky Bibliophile (tgbreviews) Hello everyone! :)

The way I discovered Outlander was dumb luck more than anything. I frequent a local used bookstore, and the owner has a small area set aside where she stacks books she's giving away, usually because they aren't selling. A copy of Outlander was in the free pile one day, and as soon as I realized it was a time travel romance, I had to have it. I was pretty sure I would enjoy reading it, but I had no idea that it would become my favorite book of this type!

That was a year or so ago. Since then, I've made many return visits, hoping to find more books in the series. It's near impossible to find a Gabaldon book over there, that isn't already being held for another customer who requested it. So far, I've found Dragonfly in Amber, Drums of Autumn, and The Fiery Cross. I *almost* had a copy of A Breath of Snow and Ashes. I was on a tight budget that week, so I asked that it and a few other books (DIA among them) be held for me until the following week. Imagine my heartbreak a week later to find (after returning home) that I had been given 2 copies of DIA, and NO copy of ABOSAA. It had been given to the wrong person (I'm sure they thought it was their lucky day LOL), so there was nothing to be done about the mix-up, other than to swap out the extra DIA for something else. And there hasn't been another copy of ABOSAA in the store since then, or they would have called me. :*(

Unless I order Voyager online (which I'm about to do soon, I think), I won't be able to read the other two books I *do* have. It's killing me to see them sitting there on the shelf, just waiting to be read, and not be able to do it. *sigh*

I still wonder how a copy of Outlander ever ended up in the free pile, as popular as the books are around here... but I'm SO glad it did. Otherwise, I would have missed out on reading this excellent series.

And the more I read through these discussions, the more I think it's time to re-read Outlander and DIA. ;)

ChristinaRae | 295 comments You'll love Voyager; it's one of the best!! Happy hunting.

The Geeky Bibliophile (tgbreviews) Well, I couldn't take it anymore, so I checked on Amazon to price the books. Average price is $11... not bad. They all seem to be the larger-sized paperbacks, like my copy of The Fiery Cross. After I get caught up buying what I need, I'll probably go back and get new copies of 1, 2, and 4, as well. (Can't stand have mis-matched sizes in a set. LOL)

Sooooooo... I'll be ordering Voyager within the next week or two. :D I'm so excited!!!! I'll have to start re-reading the first two novels right away. It wouldn't do at all to be confused about what's happening when I start reading Voyager, after all. ;)

You can buy them new too, I bought the entire series at my local bookstore, all new in one shot. Each book was about $10.00 each.

message 164: by ChristinaRae (new)

ChristinaRae | 295 comments The small paperbacks are $7.99 at Borders(California). I just got one for a friend.

Mishelle LaBrash (mishalabrash) | 397 comments Yah, I forgot, I'm Canadian, therefore my costs are higher than yours, if your in the U.S..

The Geeky Bibliophile (tgbreviews) Shell: I was looking at the new books. If I'm going to go to the trouble of ordering them, I'm going to treat myself to new copies! :)

ChristinaRae: Thanks for the tip, but I think I'll go with the larger version in this case. I don't do it very often, but for certain series' of books I like having the larger, nicer version, and I pretty much made the decision to eventually do that once I bought TFC. The bonus is, my shelf for those books is much smaller, so the books will be easier to find when I want to re-read them. (There is a method to my madness. LOL!)

message 167: by Judith (new)

Judith | 26 comments I read all the Outlander books on my Kindle. "Outlander" cost $2.99, "Echo..." (most recent) cost $9.99 and all the others were $6.39 each. Also purchased mass production paperback versions (all new) from local used book store for 10% off book price of $7.99. I bought the first and last books on CD (unabridged) from B&N on the internet. They were expensive but cheaper than price in B&N store. All that to say, it saves to look around.

I love the large size paperbacks as well, and bought all the books in that format, except for DIA & Voyager. I will have to invest in those, but what will I do with the small paperbacks?? I wish there was a book exchage we could do!! I know 'swapping' is available on this site, but not if you're in Canada (like me)! I love the idea of swapping books with other like-minded people!

The Geeky Bibliophile (tgbreviews) That's my dilemma as well, Eva. I think I'll see about trading them in at the bookstore. I know I can with the two I purchased, but I'm not so sure about Outlander, since it was a freebie. Still, as popular as they are around here, I'll ask anyway. She might make an exception, given how quickly she sells Gabaldon novels. I doubt they'd last more than a day on the shelf, and they are certain to go to someone(s) who are fans of the series that way. :)

Sally Bushnell | 4 comments Another great epic but what cliff hangers left in the air and I really don't relish waiting another 3 years to find out what happens!!! It depresses me.
I'm not sure why most of you don't like LJG I think he's quite cool, I hope you've all read his books? I think the issue of Claire and him "getting together" is strange.Finding comfort in each other maybe but sex? LJG has always been strong in his gentlemen ideals and he never really liked her repected her and grateful over his brother but sex? I'm certain Jamie would have had alot more to say to both of them in a flying rage!! And yes why did she pass on the letters she hadn't any need to get involved knowing the future anyway?
Rob Cameron gave me a bad feeling right from the start not sure where he fits in?
William Buccleigh was a bit of a suprise turning up and if the family tree is correct is he dead now having gone back through the stones with Roger so not sure why he was around. I am assuming now we know Jem is still in the present Bree and co will have to follow to find Roger? Why didn't Mandy tell her folks that he was safe if they "kent" each other so well??? A confusing story line but still griping.
I agree with most comments on Jenny but I can see why she left to go to America she has more family there and she wouldn't have been head of her house anymore.
Post note: not to sure where my first comment went so this is a bit scrambled.

Mary | 3 comments This series is very special to me. My sister got me started on them because I am a nurse. Had a very hard time getting into the first book for the first 100 pages or so but she continued to push me on until I was hooked! Living many states apart we shared many, many telephonic discussions as we progressed through the books until her death in 2008. Sadly, she made it through the 5th book and was unable to get very far into the 6th before her melanoma tumors began breaking her bones. She lost use of both arms shortly before her death but continued as far as she could with the tapes and the help of her daughter. I often find myself still trying to have our little discussions as I continue the series, wondering what she would have thought about different parts. We both fell in love with Jamie and shared many thoughts over the devotion he and Claire have for eachother. It is a series well worth several reads - I love it and have recommended it to many!

I'm so sorry.. sad to hear that about your sister... but I'm happy you both shared your love of these books - and Jamie : - )

message 176: by Mary (new)

Mary | 3 comments Eva - Dont be sad, even though I truly miss my sister she hated "this cruel world and human selfishness". She chose not to fight her disease, and kept it confided only in me almost two years before she became symptomatic, then declined rapidly over the next three months, but remained so positive and always looked forward to a better life. She was one of the few of us that actually have the opportunity and did go through every scrap of everything she personally owned and saw to it it went to who she wanted. Even made several CD's for her family to give in place of services. She slipped into her own incoherent world just days before she died. Strange thing is she knew what she had two years before she was officially diagnosed with it, we will never know how, she was never able to explain how she knew but she very accurately did. At first I didnt believe her but promise confidence and moral support in her decision until she was ready to reveal to hers and our family. I never thought about it until now, maybe she too had a ghost like Jamie forewarning/haunting her! Strange and unrealistic but so true. I have absolutely no doubt that she is at peace now. I dont mourn for her loss, she didnt loose, I mourn for loss of my very special friend, confidant, and sister. She was 48. Your thoughtfulness is kindly appreciated - but please dont feel saddened.

Rosella | 4 comments I never thought to check for a board related to the Outlander Series before. So how did I get started on this journey?

It was my mum. She recommended it and as all things mother, I ignored her. It was years later that I found the book and started to read. Once started it is impossible to put down! I am a slow reader I I could not believe how quickly I devoured "Cross Stitch" (I prefer that title). As I was reading there were passages there that I could not believe my mum had read let alone recommended to me. I'm over that now and realise she is only human.

I've finished EITB so now I have to go start all over again to recall all the bits I forgot. After mum has borrowed all my books again of course.

Flora | 3 comments Before my son was born (and when I had lots of free time, LOL) I used to love to go book hunting in our local thrift stores, they had great deals then, 10 cents per book!! I bought the first 4 books of the series, this was approx 8-9 years ago-wow how time flies!! I left them on my shelf for several months- I was reading other more interesing books- or so I thought at the time, before I re-discovered them at the back of my book shelf, I started with Voyager, and I was hooked!! I went back and read Outlander then Dragonfly in Amber and Drums of Autumn. After that I couldn't wait for the Fiery Cross, which I had to buy in the larger version, I could'nt wait for it to come out in small paperback-if you could call these small, haha and I also bought ABofSA in hardback. I have yet to buy EIB, but on this one I want to re-read the series before making the purchase, unless I find it in a used bookstore. But there is nothing like buying them new-so nice!!! And whats also nice is to know there are others out there who are equally fascinated with Claire and Jamie as I am!!!!!!

message 179: by Crystal (new)

Crystal (coinoperatedgirl) | 17 comments A few years ago I was in a Canadian Walmart looking for a book or two in the clearance bin to keep me sane on the flight home, and came across a copy of Breath of Snow and Ashes (it was actually hard to miss, being all shiny and silver). I read the back, saw that it involved time travel and romance, and put it down thinking "who would want to read *that* combination?"

My husband told me to grab it otherwise two weeks later I'd be kicking myself for not getting it. I spent the first hour on the flight trying to figure out who all the characters were, because I'd unknowingly picked up the final (at that time anyway) book in a series and had no idea what had happened in the others. In fact, I didn't find out it was a series until a few days later when a coworker saw the book and made a comment. By that point, I'd figured out who people were and was sucked into the plot, so I finished the book and then proceeded to read the series from the beginning, which I do about once a year when I run out of things on my book shelf.

Peggyzbooksnmusic Just joined this group today.

I discovered The Outlander series about 10 years ago when I was surfing the Barnes & Noble website. One of their features when you click on a book is to show other books that have been bought. I thought that The Outlander sounded very interesting (what an understatement!) and I had a gift certificate so I bought it and WOW was I hooked!

I'm now in the process of re-reading the series in anticipation of reading #7, An Echo in the Bone. Just finished The Fiery Cross and am now starting ABOSAA, my third favorite in the series after The Outlander and Voyager.

message 181: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 4 comments I got into the Outlander series about 5 years ago. My mom recommended it to me as a "historical romance/time travel" series. I wasn't into romance novels at the time and rolled my eyes and said no thanks. She told me to take Outlander and if I liked that she would give me the rest. I reluctantly took it and by the time I was done I was begging her for the rest of the books! I was completely hooked! Now, I recommend them to all of my
friends. Several of my girlfriends reading them. Now I need to re-read them so I can recall all of the details and we can discuss them. I'm totally into the historical fiction romance genre now. I've been reading Phillippa Gregory and I found The Bronze Horseman series through this group too.

message 182: by Heather (new)

Heather | 120 comments I have to say I never liked reading at all. A co-worker gave me a short book to read and it was about an Irish clan. I liked it a lot (little did I know what a real book was about at the time). A parent to a student walked in while we were still on the topic and she said I had to read the Outlander series and she brought them in. I almost died when she brought in 4 books and to see how thick and what small print they were. Guys, truly the last books I read were in kindergarten and it was about ABC and 123’S! I was polite and thanked her and tried to give her a time frame of when I might return them. School just let out so I told her by the end of summer vacation. I never planned on reading them. Well, three weeks later I was returning all four with circles around my eyes and letting her know there were 2 more books to the series and one coming in Sept. I was hooked!!! I also got approx. 5 other mothers into the series. They would come through the door and not even inquire about their child but want to know what’s next with Jamie and Claire. It looked like a book club and not a children’s therapy center. Kindles and books where out with talks of separations and husbands and boyfriends complaining about their laundry not being washed. LOL, it was great!

Jesse (Jessep) | 8 comments I found Outlander through Goodreads because in so many of my other groups I would see a mention of how great the series was so I had to look it up. From the first moment, I was hooked. These books are so incredible and they just grip me by the gut. I finished Fiery Cross about a month ago and I am checking off some other books on my list before venturing into A Breath of Snow and Ash..I've heard that this one is excellent. I'm just worried about getting through to the end of Echo and waiting two years before getting cliffhanger resolution. I figured if I can hold off a few months (BIG IF), then read Echo next year (MAJOR BIG IF), then the wait won't be so bad. I get so emotionally involved in these books, I have to take a break for my mentality because I'm totally aware that this is not normal! hehehe.

At some time I had bought Drums on a sale table and was not sure how I really like it. But, hearing about their buying the books, thought I would start with Outlander....of course I loved it and have read the series several times - well, Echo twice so far. And have they read the books - Heavens, no - Go figure!!!

Michelle | 1 comments Hello, I just joined up. I have read the series at least 7 times. I generally start re-reading from the beginning a couple of months before each new book is released. I read the first four when my twin daughters were born and in the special care nursery. Lots of reading time between feeds and not much else to do. It was great having four to work through and now it almost kills me to wait 2-3 years between books. I have just got a girlfriend onto this series and it is so funny seeing how obsessed she is with it.

message 187: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (gotrr) | 9 comments About 9 months ago, I began reading romance novels in earnest. I was in a used bookstore searching for material and the salesperson told me that Outlander was the grandaddy of all romance novels. I immediately bought a copy. I have to admit that I had a hard time getting into Outlander. I stopped at page 54 and didn't pick up the book again until last week when I got tired of it gathering dust on my shelf. I forced myself to move past the beginning of the novel and of course, I fell in love with the book. Now, I'm hooked on the series and am well into Dragonfly in Amber. Bought the ebook so that I can read it on my Blackberry whenever there is a free minute.

Can't say why I had such a hard time getting into Outlander. Perhaps if I'd had a spoiler or two, I might have been more anxious to move past the beginning. But, I purposely stayed away from reading about or listening to any revelations regarding the book or the plot. And I'm so glad I did because every story twist was and exciting revelation and made reading the book that much more enjoyable.

Love to Escape | 17 comments I still remember picking up my first copy of Outlander, about 13 years ago. My son was about one. It was on a rare occasion when my husband and I were having "alone, couple time" and we were getting coffee at a downtown bookstore in Monterey CA. It was a book featured on a shelf and I picked it up and read the first couple of pages and was hooked! It was my first time travel book and have bought every one of them since. To this day I remember reading Outlander for the first time with great anticipation, the smell of coffee, books and a delicious slab of chocolate cake.

I know what you mean. By the time I hit Fiery Cross, it seemed to take longer. On the positive side, I reread areas that I did not pay too much attention to before and it felt like reading for the first time. I think I am delaying an end to the series until the long wait for the next book. Its purely subconscious.

I'm about 50 pages away from finishing Dark Lover and I am so hooked - and more than a little bit in lust with Wrath.

I noticed that the other books in the series all focus on a specific character. Does it involve Wrath and Beth as well?? I realize I don't know how this book ends so it maybe a silly question... but are the books interwoven or just focused on that one character?

Eva, Each book does focus on a different main character, but all the other characters remain woven in the story...I was hooked on book one Dark Lover and I couldn't stop reading until I had read all there was to read by JR Ward. Yes, Covet was a new series by JR and Lover Mine comes out on the 27th. Also Rehvenge's story is really good too...Lover Avenged! Yes there are more BDB to read and enjoy!
