Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Oh, Heather, the inside flap was even more fun. The rendering of Jamie was horrible. Eek!

This is the inside of the older Dragonfly in Amber. Jamie and Claire look so different than I imagine them. lol

Yeah, Ladyhawk, I was a teen when I first read Outlander. I was able to read Outlander-Voyager and then I had to wait for DoA on. I've been reading them faithfully every release date. It was agonizing waiting for the books to come out back then. There were no tweets of excerpts or daily lines. She'd occasionally post an excerpt for the books, but that was it. Fans are so spoiled now (myself included). LOL

The funny thing is all my friends say that Outlander is the reason I'm still single. They claim I'm trying to find Jamie in the flesh. hahahaha

I own all these covers (my Drums of Autumn doesn't have the name in gold):

Mochaspresso | 11 comments I was working as a temp in an office. The person I was filling in for was on maternity leave and she left behind a copy of the first book in her desk drawer. I used to read it every day at lunch time and got hooked on the entire series.

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments That was a lucky break, mocha! :) Of course you got hooked!!!

message 504: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments LMAO, Jen! It's so awesome that you posted those! Guess what! My hardcovers are those covers! I also have the plain blue Outlander hardcover (signed) and the read 20th anniversary edition.

But my very first hardcover that I still have, it's falling apart it's been so loved, is that hardcover with the clock and the pearls.

I thought so, too. :) That was a great year.

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Aren't those covers great, even if cheesy?

Wendy, mine are all mass market paperback til you get to Fiery Cross. I have that one in trade paperback. The rest are in hardback. I want to get them all in hardback.

My original Outlander is falling apart, too! I'm afraid to even read it anymore. I do have the 20th edition in hardback, but I don't want to read that one, either. It's "the precious." I'm going to get them all in Kindle eventually. :)

message 507: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments LMAO, I won't read my hardcover or my 20th edition. I have a paperback for that. And I have them on Kindle but I haven't read it there.

message 508: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments I have all those too but Dragonfly. I also have them all in large paperback and on Kindle. I have like 6 Outlander books in multiple size paperbacks. It's an obsession but I love it!

message 509: by Jen (at last!) (last edited Apr 28, 2013 06:52PM) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments I think it's a healthy obsession! ;) I want to get them all in hardcover and in trade paperback. lol

I have them in audio b/c I was a member of Audible and could get the for super cheap during sales!

message 510: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Holmes | 6 comments I started a virtual book club with my friend who lives in Maine - I'm in York UK. We quickly expanded to 22 members and Cross Stitch was put forward as our book of the month for February. My friend Fiona convinced us all to read it- the rest is history , here I am, in this group having just finished Voyager

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Yay, Pamela! So glad you found Outlander! :)

April (scotiaphile) | 9 comments I like historical function, and a nice associate at Barnes & Noble recommended it way back when....I have them all in original hardcover...much abused lol.

message 513: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Isles | 1 comments A friend in NZ recommended Outlander to me. After finishing the book, I didn't know if I should love her for sharing a great read or hating her for sharing a book that yes indeed I loved but didn't realised until I had finished that it was part of a series of books. I found it really hard to put the book down as i needed to know what happened, but it didn't end, i need to read the next one. When I had finished i felt like a part of me was missing and i needed to read the second book fast to find out. But after the second, came the third and the fourth and i'm just about to start the fifth!! So do i thank her for suggesting a really good book, that I enjoyed reading or should i kill her, as I'm so impatient that i cant wait to read the next books!!

message 514: by Jena (new)

Jena (outlanderfan74) | 49 comments In 2009, I had just bought an EReader, and because I'm totally blind, I really had no concept of just how many books were out there. Selection in Braille was limited, and I felt like I had moved from a bathtub into an ocean with all the books that were newly available to me. So I asked all my friends for their suggestions.
At the time, I did not know my (now best friend), Desiree, very well at all, but I new she was a reader, so when she suggested Outlander, I bought it from Audible.
And I almost gave up on it!
In the first chapter or two, it just seemed to drag, and I couldn't tell where the book was headed. But once Claire went through the stones, and Jamie was introduced, I was captivated! (And then all the earlier background information made sense.) I am so incredibly glad I kept reading! Otherwise, I would have missed out on my favorite series of all time!
I owe Desiree a debt I can never repay, because these books are magical, and four years later, I'm still thanking her every time Outlander comes up in conversation!

Ladyhawk | 957 comments Ya Rebecca, that's your call! Lol

Rachel, you summed it up nicely as many fans feel the same way. I'm still ashamed for telling the friend that recommended it to me that the story was just meh when I was still in the early pary of the story.

message 516: by Linda (last edited May 12, 2013 10:57AM) (new)

Linda | 24 comments A co worker of mine recommended this 2nd hand book store and one Saturday I went to check it out. I was just browsing and my eye was caught by the blue cover on the Outlander paperback book; so I pulled it out and flipped through pages. Never heard of Diana Gabaldon back then. It was all chance. I liked that it was thick and I just started reading. This was back in 2008/2009 that I discovered this series.

message 517: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 110 comments I found them in 2007/2008....and reading has never been the same, I have all in hardcover and a complete spare "lend-out" set. My hardcovers never leave the house....These books resonate in the way many do not...beautiful, intelligent characters and writing...This and the Bronze Horseman series are my top 2 series of all time....

All of my Outlander series are paperback but I do intend to purchase the series in hardback as well.

I am curious about The Bronze Horseman series and I've seen mention of this series a couple of times. I probably will check this one out as well. I really do love a series of books because I hate for the storyline to end.

I'm impressed a husband and wife team who read. Do you often read the same books and discuss them?

message 521: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia | 3 comments Last year when my husband and I vacationed in Oregon. A woman at a shop at Depoe Bay told me about this series of books because she noticed that I have crooked fingers like Jamie. My crooked fingers are caused by Dupuytren's contracture which is a genetic anomaly associted with People of Scandinavian or Northern European ancestry. It has been called the "Viking disease" or "Celtic hand". She thought I would be interested in the historical fiction of the Outlander series since Jamie comes from Scotland and we seem to have a similar genetic background. I thought that was cool because this condition is very rare especially in a female. I am glad I started the series. I am half way through the Fiery Cross and have loved the other books in the series.

I just had to reply here!

Margaret Thatcher (the late ex prime-minister) had it and so it became known as Maggie's finger!

April F. | 1 comments It was in 1994 and I was pregnant with twins, I needed a book and we didn't have a lot of money, I was also on bed rest so I bought the thickest book they had on the shelf in the romance area, it was Dragon Fly in Amber, I didn't know it was the second book until I started to read it. Normally I could never have started and waited to get the first one, but I was desperate for something to read, I was hooked shortly into the beginning and it never mattered that it was the second. She has been my favorite for 19 years now, oh how time flies! My twins are graduating high school this month!!

message 526: by Ladyhawk (new)

Ladyhawk | 957 comments Oh April congratulations to you and your graduates! It's amazing to me how these stories of "how I found the Outlander Series" are so personal, enlightening and touching!

The Bronze Horseman is the first in a really good trilogy! Really puts you in the time.....you feel like you are in the midst of WWII :) I loved it. I am also very impatiently awaiting the 8th in this series! :)

message 528: by Catherine (last edited May 19, 2013 01:22PM) (new)

Catherine | 288 comments I am working on getting them all in hardcover(at the moment I have all paperbacks).....so far I have Outlander & Echo in hardcover. And......I'm definitely getting Written in My Own Heart's Blood when it comes out :)

message 529: by Lysette (new)

Lysette (lysettegr) | 1 comments My aunt recommended this serie to me, and since she gave me the first book, i was hooked!
And it is still my favorite book so far...

message 530: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 13 comments Outlander was a suggested book for me on my Audible account a couple of years ago. I figured I would try it since it had so many excellent reviews and I am glad I did. I was hooked from the start and completed all seven of the books in record time. Can't wait for book 8.

message 531: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (mandalou31) | 11 comments In 2010 I was off work after shoulder surgery and a friend loaned me a copy of Cross Stitch, 2 days later I phoned her to let her know I was ready for the next book, I was totally hooked. I've now read the series 3 times, have all the books (including the Lord John series) plus have them on my E reader, Im now listening to them on audio.

message 532: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolmo) | 42 comments What a great idea Amanda! Never thought to listen to them on audio. I have read them all four times and am completely hooked too. I see a splurge coming!

Heather in FL (heather_fl) Carol wrote: "What a great idea Amanda! Never thought to listen to them on audio. I have read them all four times and am completely hooked too. I see a splurge coming!"

They are *incredible* in audio. I haven't read the books, only listened to them. Davina Porter is a master narrator.

message 534: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (mandalou31) | 11 comments If you join Audible they are a lot cheaper, I pay $16 a month and get to download a book for free. I listen to them on my long drive to and from work and set the timer and go to sleep listening to Davina's great voice.

message 535: by Heather in FL (new)

Heather in FL (heather_fl) I love that they're only one credit, but still the full, unabridged versions.

message 536: by CHC94 (new)

CHC94 | 44 comments A college friend introduced me to Outlander. At first, I said, "No, that's too thick for me to read."

A few years later, I read it and was hooked.

I'm on my 2nd re-read (now they are on my Kindle) and I listen to the audiobooks on my commute.

message 537: by Susan (new)

Susan | 2 comments I can't remember how I discovered the series but I'm glad I did in 2000. I have all 7 books in paperback and HC and will be purchasing them for my Nook soon. Even then I won't be able to part with my hard copies unless I lend them out. Currently I'm listening to the audio books while I get some sock knitting done, and while commuting. I'm almost finished with Drums of Autumn and hope to be finished listening to Echo before the new book comes out in December.
I love everything about this series, I've read it through 3 times over the years.

message 538: by Juanita (new)

Juanita | 25 comments A 70 year old friend of a friend kept telling me that she thought I would like the books. I was hesitant as the whole idea of time travel didn't appeal to me (really). Finally I told her I would give it a try and after many (and I mean many) sleepless nights I finished the first four and then had to wait for Fiery Cross. We have become dear friends. I visit her regularly and we have become good friends. She is in her 80s now and still reads non-stop. I keep her up to date on when the next book will be out and she jokes and says she better live to read the final book. Just love her!

message 539: by Vanessa Eden (new)

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments I found outlander by looking up recommended romance novels. Outlander was at the top of every list I looked at. I bought it at a local bookstore and the rest is history! I fell in love with Jamie!

message 540: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 11, 2013 12:55AM) (new)

It was recommanded by a friend who knew I like time travel stories. I read the first four books last year.

message 541: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (mandalou31) | 11 comments A good friend talked me into reading Cross Stitch in 09 while I was recovering from shoulder surgery, I've been hooked ever since.

message 542: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Welcome all to "Outlander Land"! Great books and hoping the miniseries will be just as good!

message 543: by Beth (new)

Beth (bethorne) | 4 comments I read about Outlander while reading another story. The main character was reading it, or had read it, or something. That was in 2009. So I read it and never looked back!

message 544: by Debra (new)

Debra Beckman (dbec1998) | 45 comments I first saw the Outlander book on the desks of 8 different speech pathologists at a conference I was presenting. I asked one of the therapists why, and she told me it was the best book EVER! I started reading it, then decided that I had to hear it, so I bought the CDs and would pull into the parking lot or garage and just stay In the car to hear just a little more of the story. I have read the first book over 29 times, and the entire series to date 19 times.

message 545: by Maggievzqz (new)

Maggievzqz | 2 comments I read them and loved them a long time ago.... I loaned my original copies to a friend of mine who had Cancer, final stages. They helped her for a while.....but I never got them back!!! I miss her and my books, but life goes on. Now I got my digital versions :)))

message 546: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 288 comments I am impatiently awaiting the 8th book...but in the interim...I have begun the Lord John Grey series(which is a "spin-off" of sorts) it has been on my tbr list for ages....and I finally read the first one! although, I kept expecting Jamie to appear somewhere in the story, it was in no way disappointing!

I also love the Bronze Horseman series as well as Into the Wilderness Series. Another book that may hit you to the core is The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope...all of these books are my #1, can't choose, I only know I am thankful for intelligent, imaginative writers out there!

message 548: by Jennie (new)

Jennie (mariebelle520) | 5 comments I'm not sure why I never found these books on my own, they're definitely right up my alley. But last year an old friend suggested them to me, knowing my taste in books & that my bf lives in Scotland, she was sure I'd enjoy them. Well...I'm not even finished with book 1 yet & already love them...she was right ;)

message 549: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Glad you're enjoying #1! Those of us who have re-read these numerous times are a little envious of those who are just starting The Outlander "journey"! :D
