I'd say Hermione she always had a bigger knowledge and memorization of spells and she is very good at them so Hermione.

Stepheny Hermione may know more, but Harry is the best at DADA so...I am gonna go with Harry.

Lauren Stoolfire I'd say Hermione.

Emily Harry. Hermione is brilliant but Harry has a certain flair for defensive magic. In the first three, she would have wiped the floor, but not later.

Ronja I'm not sure... I find it hard to picture a serious duell between the two of them.
My first feeling was that Hermione would totally win, but you're right. Harry does have real talent. And they're both pretty good at thinking in the midst of a confrontation... I'd probably still bet on Hermione, but it's a tough one.

I agree with you, close but I still think Hermione will win.

Pauline I'd say Harry. Hermione may be smart but so is Harry he's just not applying it in his studies that much but if were talking about dueling here it's completely different situation. Harry is born with it. He has talent for DADA. Hermione might outsmart him in some ways but he's stronger and can act in dire situations really well.

Luna Belle Pris If I remember correctly Hermione got an E and Harry got an O on their report cards for DADA... just saying. I think Harry is better at dueling and Hermione is better at problem solving, so Harry would win.

Brittney I honestly think it would be a tie. Hermione is very clever and Harry is a natural. I just don't know. lol I wouldn't want them dueling each other!! :-)

Maggie I think it would be a tie. Hermione is so smart, she would probably know spells that Harry didn't. But Harry is better at DADA. Of course, Hermione could probably Transfigure Harry into a mushroom and that would be that. But if Harry's using the Elder Wand, then he would win.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Potter although Hermione will give him a lot of trouble with her larger knowledge of spells from other areas such as Charms and Transfiguration. She loses only because her skill in these other areas haven't been shown to be as good as the top wizards', such as Snape.

I'm going to have to say that Hermione would win. Harry pretty much only knows 2 spells....

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Hermione.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Because Ron would be standing next to her firing spells at Harry too.

Paula Harry would win. He beat Voldemort so he is capable of beating Hermione.

Nurlely Hermione will win. She is smart and capable of doing things when it comes to logic (the spell she used to change Harry's face is not all comfortable). If beating Harry is necessary, she will do it. Harry is natural, but will never flick his wand towards Hermione to beat her. Or while Harry is spending time thinking whether it is okay to beat his friend, Hermione manages to transform him into... an apple?

Nakia Graham Harry

Elizabeth I reserve judgement because the mechanism for learning to do spells, and thus the things which make people good at them, aren't made at all clear in the books, so we don't know what makes someone 'talented' at magic. The information that we're given about learning spells suggests that it just needs memory, correct pronunciation and gestures, perseverance and above all CONCENTRATION, all of which would suggest that Hermione would kick Harry's backside. However, Hermione does (for some inexplicable reason) to not be so good at DADA, although if I had her ability I'd use transfiguration and charms like Mcgonagall, which she is clearly better at than Harry

Saidah Gilbert Elizabeth wrote: "I reserve judgement because the mechanism for learning to do spells, and thus the things which make people good at them, aren't made at all clear in the books, so we don't know what makes someone '..."

A lot of concentration is needed. Which is why Harry would win a duel. Hermione tends to get distracted 'problem-solving' in tough situations.

Elizabeth Sam wrote: "Elizabeth wrote: "I reserve judgement because the mechanism for learning to do spells, and thus the things which make people good at them, aren't made at all clear in the books, so we don't know wh..."
Hmm, Hermione was never distracted during a duel - no-one would be if it were a matter of life and death. She only tends to go into 'problem-solving' mode when just casting a few powerful spells isn't sufficient, and that ability has saved the day numerous times, it's not a disadvantage

Samantha The Escapist Though I think what Rowling said sounds good, I think that Hermione would benefit more than Harry from knowing her opponent so well.

Matched against the same enemgy Harry would likely do better than Hermione, but matched against each other I think Hermione would really make use of how well she knows Harry - and by extension, his weaknesses.

Hermione is far more manipulative.

Julia I think it all boils down to where Harry's head is during the duel. He's got far superior reflexes, but if Hermione can get a single spell past his defenses, he's done. And she's better at staying focused. If Harry's head is in the game, he'll win. If he's at all distracted, Hermione will win.

Mikela Julia wrote: "I think it all boils down to where Harry's head is during the duel. He's got far superior reflexes, but if Hermione can get a single spell past his defenses, he's done. And she's better at stayin..."

He's probably be distracted by the fact that he's dueling Hermione...

Fonni Sinder Hermione has a clear head during battle. Harry gets emotional or sentimental. Hermione has a bigger advantage and a wider knowledge of spells. I think she would win

Samantha The Escapist Laura wrote: "Harry would win. Hermione is a really good witch but Harry has faced so many risks... Besides in the 3rd book he was better than her on the defence against the dark arts test that Lupin created!"

Yeah but in the 7th book they all would be dead several times over if it weren't for Hermione.

I love how consistently everyone is disagreeing! Great question op :)

message 26: by Ronja (new) - added it

Ronja I don't think that Harry would profit THAT much from being better in Defense against the Dark Arts.
In DADA and all the attacks he survived he fights against more or less dangerous creatures or deatheaters and I don't think that is comparable with a duell between him and one of his best friends. Harry only knows spells for life-threatening situations that demand desperate measures. I don't think he's reckless enough to use them against Hermione.
She would win because she knows harmless but effective spells, that allow her to win without hurting Harry.

Kaeri Against each other? Harry is strong, but Hermione can seriously outwit him. I'm sure she knows a ton of spells Harry doesn't and will be quicker than Harry. Defense against the dark Arts goes to Harry, but he won't exactly need that kind of magic to fight against Hermione does he? I mean, come on, in the books, it's almost always Hermione who comes up with what spell to use in difficult situations.

message 28: by Steven (last edited May 31, 2014 02:35PM) (new)

Steven M Harry would win. Although Hermione gets better grades, all her knowledge is studying. She doesn't have enough experience and practice. Harry is amazing at the Dark Arts and Defense Against the Dark Arts. He is the only known master of death.

message 29: by Anna (last edited May 31, 2014 07:42PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna Hermione. Harry is very good at DADA, but he just uses the basic defense spells: Expelliarmus, Stupefy, etc. A duel isn't won just using defensive spells. Do they help? Absolutely. But one also has to be clever, using strategy to either catch their enemy off guard or simply confuse them. Harry has his moments, but Hermione is always thinking. When the Snatchers caught them in the Forest of Dean, she cursed Harry to confuse the Snatchers. Hermione can think quickly and effectively, on her feet. Harry is still a good wizard. In a duel with Hermione, however, she would win.

Paula Harry would eventually find a way to win.

Daisy Gotta be Hermione, i can't honestly say Harry would even have a chance against her.

B Paula wrote: "Harry would eventually find a way to win."

I agree! I think Hermione would get the upper hand in the beginning, but Harry would outlast her. He's also more innovative than she is.

Absolutely. It's not about strengh or force, it's about strategy and intelligence. Besides, Harry was always stunned how resourceful Hermione is with spells. He didn't even know half of them.

Carolina Morales Hermione would bring Harry down within a minute.

Rux Sta Harry

But Harry was never about strength or force - that was Voldemort, who Harry was always fighting and eventually won. Hermione's great, but Harry has always managed to outshine her. Hermione has the book smarts, but Harry has the practical, street smarts that it takes to win (and Harry has always had sheer luck on his side ;D).

Commander Spock(Live Long and Prosper) Hermione. Luck can only get Potter so far, and Hermione knows way more than him. 'Cause she's a badass.

Harriet Limpot This is a great question. I've never actually thought of it. But I think Harry would win. Hermione might know every single spell that exists, but in a duel, it's not about how much spells you know how to cast, it's about how good you cast a spell. And I think Harry is definitely on it. Harry defeated the Dark Lord only through Expelliarmus. Just think how Hermione's best spells would backfire at her because of Harry's great defending skills.

Kahley Even though Hermione is extremely smart, Harry has faced Voldemort at least 5 times and Hermione, 0.

Kahley So Harry would win. Plus he got an O in his DATDA (Defense against the dark arts) O.W.L

message 41: by Elin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elin Hermione is extremely talented and clever and would have won in the first 3 books, but then Harry started to learn more advanced magic and he faced Voldemort more than 5 times and Harry killed Voldemort as well. And you can't bring down Voldemort and being weak. Harry is strong and in the fourth book he got away with Cedric´s body and the Tri Wizard cup and just using Expelliarmus against Voldemort and that is pretty strong.
So i would go with Harry

I totally agree

message 43: by Sami (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sami Harry was the one who won against Voldemort, but I'm pretty sure Hermione would have the smarts to beat Harry.

message 44: by Suge (new) - rated it 5 stars

Suge I don't think there would be a winner. Hermione wouldn't want to hurt Harry and Harry wouldn't want to harm Hermione lol.

Hannah Lee Hermione. Hermione, Hermione, Hermione. Harry has no actually special abilities if you really think about it. He was marked, and that's what makes him special. Also, Hermione not only has the smarts but she also knows Harry sometimes better than he does himself. She is more advanced than he is, and even though she learned the Patronus spell after he did, that was because she didn't have a horrible past and dead parents haunting her. Point is, Hermione, though I really don't have anything against Harry, has the real talent. Harry is just special, but Hermione worked and sweat for her abilities.

Hannah Lee Elin wrote: "Hermione is extremely talented and clever and would have won in the first 3 books, but then Harry started to learn more advanced magic and he faced Voldemort more than 5 times and Harry killed Vold..."
That was because of the wand cores. Not that I'm hatin' on Harry, but just stating facts. Then again, he had the will power to force the beads of light towards Voldy here, but that's just willpower, not talent.

Hannah Lee Paula wrote: "Harry would win. He beat Voldemort so he is capable of beating Hermione."
Only if she becomes suddenly super evil and shares the same wand core as him.

Hannah Lee Anastasia Inkyfingers wrote: "Because Ron would be standing next to her firing spells at Harry too."
HAHA funny :P

Crystal Wang This is difficult... but I'd say... Hermione?

Karol Nayeli I would go with Harry, because Hermione would know all the spells but I mean Harry is the master of DADA here. :)
