I was lucky enough to snag an interview with Ms. Lorraine Bartlett, enjoy!
Mini Interview with Lorraine Bartlett
#1 Where do you see yourself as a writer in 10 years?
L.B. Sitting at my desk, writing. But my desk may be in another location. Who knows.
#2 If you could live anywhere regardless of the weather, where and why?
L.B. I pretty much like where I am. But if I could give anywhere a shot, it would be the Cotswolds in England. I'm definitely not a city girl.
#3 What genres do you like to read when you are not writing?
L.B. I generally don't read fiction when I'm writing--which is pretty much all the time. Therefore, I read a lot of nonfiction. For instance, I recently read an entire book about rehabbing single-wide trailers. Why? I don't know. It just sounded interesting. Of course, I'm also interested in recycling and repurposing useful items. I also read a lot of decorating magazines and books, as well as DIY books, although I have little to no talent in that regard. If I am reading fiction, it's usually a book to "blurb" for my publisher (or a friend), or women's fiction.
#4 Do you do book signings, if no do you have plans to, when and where?
L.B. I've pretty much given up book signings. The problem? Not many people come anymore. It costs the stores a great deal of time and effort to set them up, and when readers don't come, they're reluctant to set them up and authors are reluctant to schedule them. I'm a wreck for the entire week before I have to do a signing, which means I can't get any writing done. Since I support myself with my writing, that's a week without making progress (or a week without pay.) These days I'm more likely to drop in a store and sign the stock (books). I also offer my readers signed bookplates.
#5 Do you" base" any of your fictional characters in your books from people in
your personal life?
L.B. Rarely. Usually a story requires a character do perform a specific task or set of tasks to keep the narrative moving forward. I might pick up a trait or a hobby one of my friends does and add it. For instance, for a while, my friend Ellery Adams was into kickboxing. I used that for one of my characters and it came in very handy, but this character bears absolutely no resemblance to Ellery in any other way.
#6 What are working on now?
L.B. As of now, I'm writing the sixth Jeff Resnick mystery, DARK WATERS, which will be available by the time this interview goes live. By then, I'll be in the middle of the ninth Booktown Mystery, which as of yet has no title. I've got plans to write the third installment in my fantasy series, Tales of Telenia (titled TREACHERY), and a novelette to introduce a character I hope to write about in the future. Plus I have a couple of ideas for short stories I'd like to work on. I like to keep busy.
#7 Do you have any talents other than being a great writer?
L.B. I don't consider myself a great writer, but I do consider myself to be a pretty good storyteller. I don't seem to have any other real talents. On a good day, I can bake a pretty decent cake or a few dozen cookies. I'm fairly good at organization. I had to give up hobbies like knitting and counted cross stitch because of carpal tunnel syndrome. Thank goodness I can still type!

The immensely popular Booktown Mystery series is what put Lorraine Bartlett’s pen name Lorna Barrett on the New York Times Bestseller list, but it’s her talent -- whether writing as Lorna, or L.L. Bartlett, or Lorraine Bartlett -- that keeps her there. This multi-published, Agatha-nominated author pens the exciting Jeff Resnick Mysteries as well as the acclaimed Victoria Square Mystery series, and now the Tales of Telenia fantasy saga, and has many short stories and novellas to her name(s). Check out the links to all her works here: http://www.lorrainebartlett.com
Her latest release is Dark Waters, the 6th book in the Jeff Resnick Mysteries. (The first book, Murder on the Mind, is free on all e book formats.)

I like the novels of the Jeff Reznik series a lot but Bound by Suggestion was too disturbing for me. That one can not be called a cozy by any stretch of the imagination. I am not saying that it was not a good book, it just wasn't for me. I have Dark Water but it is in a "short stack" of about 20 books I want to read first. lol

Below is an interview that I was lucky enough to do with Sandra Balzo, enjoy!
Mini Interview with Sandra Balzo
#1 Where do you see yourself as a writer in 10 years?
S.B. It may sound funny, given I’m eight books (as of December) into the one series and two into the other, but I’d still like to be writing the Maggy Thorsen Coffee Mysteries and Main Street Murders. I’d probably be on Maggy #18 and Main Street #12. The challenge, of course, would be coming up with enough coffee puns for the titles of the Maggy books.
And . . . . okay, I’ll admit it. I’d love to see—sometime, somehow, somewhere—a television series or movie based on my books. The upcoming Maggy #8, Murder on the Orient Espresso, is very visual—think train, Agatha Christie and the Everglades. Patrick Dempsey, who just bought a string of coffee shops, should take it on and play the adorable Sheriff Pavlik. Hey, he obviously loves coffee, right? Let’s all write and tell him!!!
#2 If you could live anywhere regardless of the weather, where and why?
S.B. I love Madison, in my home state of Wisconsin. Situated on two beautiful lakes, it’s both the state capitol and a college town (the University of Wisconsin), so there’s always something going on.
#3 What genres do you like to read when you are not writing?
S.B. I’ve always loved mysteries, but I also enjoy biographies and memoirs. I just finished Wade Rouse’s At Least in the City Someone Would Hear Me Scream. Inspired by Thoreau’s Walden, Wade and his partner Gary move to the wilds of rural Michigan. It’s wonderful—hilarious and heartwarming.
#4 Do you do book signings, if no do you have plans to, when and where?
S.B. I love library talks and discussion groups, especially. The bookstore signings are usually at specialty shops that invite me to come in, like Murder on the Beach in Delray Beach, FL or Mechanicsburg Mystery Bookstore near Harrisburg, PA. I’m staying close to home right now, so the next event on my schedule is Magna Cum Murder, a conference in Indianapolis Oct. 25-27.
#5 Do you" base" any of your fictional characters in your books from people in your personal life?
S.B. You bet! (Not that I’m going to tell you...)
No, seriously, there is a lot of me in Maggy, though she’s mouthier and braver than I am. The other characters are combinations of people I’ve known over the years. A piece of him, a chunk of her. Oh, and Frank the gigantic, drooling sheepdog was named after a good friend in Milwaukee. Who is still a good friend, thankfully.
#6 What are working on now?
S.B. I just finished edits to Murder on the Orient Espresso, Maggy #8, which will be out December 1 in the US and August 30 in the UK. My publisher is Severn House in London, so the books come out there first.
In Orient Espresso, I take Maggy on a trip to my newly adopted home of Fort Lauderdale for a mystery writers conference with her beau, Sheriff Jake Pavlik, who’s to speak. Maggy's anticipating a romantic weekend, but upon arrival they’re whisked off to the opening night event--a re-enactment of Agatha Christie’s classic, Murder on the Orient Express, on a night train into the Everglades. The idea is to solve the 'crime' and return, but ….well, you know how it goes. I had great fun writing this one.
Next up, is the third installment in the Main Street series, tentatively entitled, To Heir is Human.
#7 Do you have any talents other than being a great writer?
No. And many days I’m not so sure of that one, either.
S.B. I enjoy playing tennis, swimming, running—but I’m no great shakes at any of them. I DID, though, run a marathon at the age of 48, and I’m very proud of that. I also just bought a Montgomery Ward vintage sewing machine (green!). Unfortunately, my sewing experience is limited to a “shift dress” I made in high school Home Economics, so don’t look for me on Project Runway anytime soon.

Day 5 SANDRA BALZO
Maggy Thorsen series
Maggy Thorsen, an ex-PR executive who now co-owns a coffee shop. She helps solve the murders in this small town in Wisconsin. She is constantly running into Sheriff Jake Pavlik, who just happens to be easy on the eyes. Mystery, romance and of course plenty of humor.

I like the idea of a small town in Wisconsin. I'm just across the bridge in Iowa.
Day 6 SANDRA BALZO
I have her all of her Maggy Thorsen books that are out. I loved them all. I know her other series is just as great. I definitely highly recommend her books, you won't be disappointed when you give her a try!
