what exactly is a mutant? Like a hybrid of something?

A mutant is an animal or human that has been changed in some sort of way from radiation exposure. That's mostly with animals. Humans are usually changed by attacks and they die soon after or gain powers(All the superhero stuff). An animal could have a different color of fur or have human like attributes. But no, not a hybrid.
