I continue to be surprised, maybe because I incorrectly assume that people who love books understand some basic rules of discussion, of sharing your POV. The cool thing here is that there is no right or wrong answer!(I do need to say that calling everyone who doesn't share your conclusions "crazy"? That's not useful, its just disrespectful and not nice) I just want to know why you like her. Full stop. You *have* to back up your statement here. It means nothing if you (and this is not me slappin' you around, this applies to all of us, particularly when someone has asked a direct question). I love to learn from other people, to have new perspectives that I miss because I am just one person.

Help me with a question too, someone, how many YA "dystopian" books have come out in the past 5-10 years? If there aren't very many, maybe it is more helpful to compare Katniss to a broader group? (Or not, which is why I need help) :)

I appreciate this answer a lot. It has been so frustrating to think of young women (I feel like I should duck!

Nuran Amy wrote: "Her choices at the end of Mockingjay horrified me... No part of me liked Katniss from the moment she voted "yes" for more Hunger Games. My first thought was of Rue- how shocked and sad she, and Prim.... And Cinna and so many others, would feel. HOW could Katniss wish this horrible thing on more children??..."

Then you didn't read the book properly or really understood Katniss if you actually thought Katniss wanted another game. If you read too fast than you can miss the clues. I had to re-read the passage a second time straight after because it didn't make sense for her character to say yes. And then it made sense, she was tricking Coin.

Major evidence for this is when she thinks back to 75 years ago and thinks of pleas of mercy being ignored, and since she realise nothing has changes, pleas of mercy would be ignored again even if they voted against it because Coin is the one in power and is no better than Snow.

And since Coin already tried to kill Katniss and she's forced to check her weapons in, she didn't want Coin to suspect her so she could get her weapon close to her to kill her.

I wrote a thread with pictures of highlighted text for the clues and a better explanation on how the ending is misunderstood.

Malisa I don't hate Katniss. I think she is a pretty brave and strong character. While I respect everyone's opinion, I personally found her to be quite practical and selfless. Yes, she was a little confused about her choices, but who isn't? I think it would be unnatural to be completely sure about everything you do all the time. In the end, she proved herself to be worthy of everything she was hailed for. I don't think she was selfish at all. She did what she had to survive and protected those she loved in every way possible. Overall, I think she was a really well-portrayed and realistic character.

I agree, Katniss never really "stuck" with Me, nothing about Her really stood out to Me. I found Her very dry, bland, blunt, and just...........well She has the personality of dry toast. The only people She showed any type of compassion was Prim and Rue! and She only showed compassion on Rue because She reminded Her of Prim! Katniss was a bit cold in the first book, but was softer in the second book, then a complete boy crazed hot mess in the last book! What happened to Her development?!

Violet Armstrong I know there are people out there who love Katniss claiming she's strong and independent and some other stuff shout out to them, I don't see your point to me it seemed like the author Suzanne Collins was TRYING to make it look like Katniss was strong as well as passionate and emotional but seriously I don't not get why people bought it, to me Katniss seemed like a VERY thin character who had no potential to be the main character I am not saying she's has really bad I am saying thats she's not really that good. And then theres the whole love triangle thing it just really annoyed me that katniss just couldn't make up her mind she was dragging both Gale and Peeta along for like TWO WHOLE BOOKS FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!and no matter how much she claims to be boyish and un-girly type I think that all of us can see how big of a drama queen she is.And sorry for all those who love Katniss it's just my opinion.

Amelia Joy I hate her, she is my least favourite character in the book, she is just so rude, and i feel so sorry for Peeta, she treats him so badly

Lourdes One of the many reason why (hate is a strong word) detest Katniss is for her long plastic romance with Peeta. I believe he deserved so much better and so did Gale. I accept the ending however on account of it left Peeta with a happily ever after, which he deserved.

Sleet Yeah, i really didn't like her.

Erin B Velasquez I think Katniss's brain development got a little stalled when her dad died. You have to remember she was a child and her mom, who should have been the adult completely shut down because she had never learned to deal with extreme struggle. Katniss, from I think 8 years of age has viewed everything as a struggle for survival and everyone as trying to destroy her and the one person she has left, the extremely innocent Primrose. Katniss is not morally deficient. She has a very childish sense of morality. If you are innocent (in her eyes) and cannot defend yourself, she will defend you. If you can defend yourself (in her eyes) and are not doing it, you are weak or lazy. If you can defend yourself in her eyes and doing it...you are going to come after those she loves. That is why she distrusts petal so much...People don't just do something good without an agenda. That's why she can't do politics...shes very "you're either helping me or trying to hurt me and if you are helping me without a reason I can define, you are trying to hurt me" Katniss is an adult, or near adult with the emotional maturity of an 8 year old. It puts me in mid of the child soldiers abducted and conditioned in war torn parts of Africa. We are not supposed to like her; nobody likes her. That's her problem. We are supposed to, by the end of it empathize with her. I think that's why the author wrote the prequel about president Snow. Every person was once a little baby, hopefully being rocked in the arms of their adoring parents. If they become horrible human beings or even unlikeable human beings...why is that? What happened to make a sweet baby into a Hitler...usually it is the awful adults around them...it doesn't excuse their moral choices...but...it makes them more understandable...thats what most (good) fiction is about. Understanding or being exposed to human nature from all sides...In fact, I think, (here, I tried to link to a site showing the video where Katniss comes home with Haymitch at the very end and Prim's cat is already back in the house. (but the site would not let me and I appreciate their restrictions to keep people from posting ads etc) this scene is perfectly indicative of Katniss's mentality. The interaction between her and Prim's cat (get the irony cat/Kat). He's ugly, he's got all kinds of battle wounds...that's why Prim loved him. Perfectly explains the character of Kat...she attacks everyone that she doesn't know sincerely needs her and she stubbornly refuses to leave those who do. That cat hated Katniss, but now won't leave because they are bound by the affection for someone who loved them completely unselfishly no matter what not even wanting anything back from them.

Evelyn Kate Katniss is rlly confusing. First, she's all tough girl survivor and then she's all depressed and crying. Don't get me wrong, I'm with her 100% as a main character and hope she wins and all, but as a person, I don't like her.
