This book is really getting me thinking about the future in general and whilst I would love to believe things mentioned in this book could never happen in the real world..There are a lot of people in the world who are greedy and would sell their souls if they could make some money off it.

Michele Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn I have heard so much about this author, I hope I am not disappointed :)

Hi Michelle,
I have just finished TRUTH by the same author, Peter Temple. I didn't enjoy the clipped style of writing and found the story plot to be another dysfunctional Homicide cop with sticky fingers from the past. Like you I struggled to rate it more than a 2.

Hi Pete, glad I am not the only one that didn't enjoy his writing style.
I just finished Sharp Objects - wow what a great read - I thought I had the ending picked early in the book, boy was I wrong! Really looking forward to reading Gone Girl

I am currently reading: The Genesis Plague by Michael Byrnes

I have never come across this author before, but so far the book is a rip-roaring yarn in the ilk of a Hollywood film. A summer read where pop-corn is required, but by no means dumb. It's full of action and military stuff mixed in with an ancient Mesopotamian curse! Great light-read that's keeping me turning the pages.

message 4914: by Sandy (new)

Sandy Papas Best reads this year - Mrs Queens takes the Train and The Kashmir Shawl ( a real surprise - reminded me of The English Patient in parts ). Snow White must die is a good thriller in the genre of Nesbo, Larson etc...

Currently reading The Round House - heavy topic matter but very well written.

Can you link the first one/s Sandra, I can't locate it without the author for some reason...

Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus
The Round House by Louise Erdrich

We also have a thread for your best reads this year too, if you want to check it out, you might find some others you haven't read before:)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3567 comments That is so funny Brenda! And so right! Our eldest is now 19, and I can still recite most of Dinosaur Roar! Board Book which the library finally donated to our family when it came time to retire it. Then there was Harry The Hairy Nosed Wombat & Other Australian Animal Tales which had multiple words, none of which we were allowed to skip, alter or forget.

Both of our kids are avid readers :) And now I'm facilitating the process with other families because I just can't resist purchasing copies of Diary of a Wombat for new our friends having babies!

Michele Just finished Me Before You by Jojo Moyes - another of those books where I wish goodreads allowed 1/2 stars - it annoyed me at the start, improved in the middle and the ending was good (if the amount of tears is anything to go by), but I didn't want to give it 4 stars, but I think it was better than a 3.

message 4936: by David (new)

David Lloyd | 1 comments Reading Fahrenheit 451. Some similar theories as Brave New World, keep us dumb and happy so we don't ask the hard questions, let alone know what the hard questions are in the first place. I enjoy this type of sci-fi, where the focus of the story is on how people interact and not so much about the changes in technology. Half way into his book and looking forward to an occasional uprising and general awakening of the senses by the desensitised population. Reminds me a bit of the kid's movie Wall-E, where a few people have their screens screens taken away and realise how beautiful the sky and stars are.

Thankyou Marianne, I’ll definitely buy this book.

I love her memoirs at the moment, and I agree she is one to watch out for. Her prose in her memoir is just as beautiful and gentle as you've mentioned in the review :)

Haha! I was up till 12.45am finishing Dark Horse by Honey Brown as well. I started it yesterday during the day, and just couldn't put it down....of course when I had to, I badly wanted to get back to it! So it's finished, and it was brilliant!!

Life After Life definitely sounds....different! But intriguing!

I'm about half way now (it's a long book) but it is truly fascinating. Did you ever see that film - I think it was called Sliding Doors where Gwyneth Paltrow tried to get on a train and in one version of her life she catches it and in another she misses it? Well this book is like that except there are many many versions of the main character's life. Love it!

Finished Life After Life lst night. Now that is the kind of book which should be winning awards. Brilliant. Just out of interest look how boring the American cover is Life After Life by Kate Atkinson compared to the British one Life After Life by Kate Atkinson
