Great review on The Neighbor Michael, I have it in my Winter challenge to read. Then I looked up and read the blurb of Life Expectancy, and it sounds really good! So I've added it to MT. TBR!!! LOL :)

Cathleen Ross (goodreadscomuser-cathleenross) | 10 comments I'm fascinated with a book I'm reading at the moment called Destiny of Souls. It's written by Michael Newton who regresses people back to their past life and then he brings them forward to the time in between lives.I can't put it down. It explains what happens when you die. Great reading for an author interested in writing the paranormal.

Khenan Bragador | 140 comments Just finished Animal Liberation and The Runaway Jury today! Being a vegan i thought Animal Liberation would be a pretty good book, it was facinating for sure, i especially enjoyed the discussion about history and speciesism (religion and romans and stuff :D). Runaway Jury.. well i love the movie haha so i had to try. Must say i prefer the movie, the book was quite good but there were many parts where i cringed and compared it badly to the movie. Good read overall though!

Now onto my bi-yearly(woops, twice a year) harry potter series run-through :P Finally watched the latest harry potter movie last night so i got it in my mind to read em again :)(i can't read just 1 book of them and walk away somehow :( have to go through the series) Fun times.

And you call yourself a book lover! You should definitely read the whole series next, because it is quite literally the best thing ever :)

Michael (knowledgelost) I haven't read Harry Potter either

message 1661: by ★ Jess (new)

They're my favorite books ever...So yeah. YOu should definitely read them one day. The writing in the first to books is pretty childish, though books #3-7 everything is perfect.

I am very disappointed in all of you.
I mean, not even the movies!? :(

message 1666: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments The books are 10000000000 times better :D

message 1667: by [deleted user] (new)

i can understand you guys not reading them i mean the first one is made for like 9 year olds...i tried to get my dad to read them he got the three and gave up

but i still love them and find them really fun i would still recommend them.
and books over movies every time since the fourth one the movies have been horrible! i dont know why i go to see book to move conversions im always disappointed. i think I want to much from the movies.

message 1670: by [deleted user] (new)

o i played that on DS sooo funny lol

message 1671: by Neko (new)

Neko Haha..The game completely stumps me though..Doesn't really give you much of the storyline as such cause they blur it with their own lego style. It's enjoyable but not the best lego game..And they've dumbed down the bosses amazingly..lol

On topic...My Favourite Wife is actually turning out to be better than I thought. I'm pleasently suprized at how much I can read and not get distracted. So with that this book should be finished just before it turns to June.

message 1672: by Dale (new)

Dale Renton (dalerenton) Just getting back (briefly) to the HP thread - I've always felt vaguely guilty about not enjoying Harry Potter books - possilby because JKR is a fellow Scot (by origin) and her personal rags to riches story is wonderful. I began the first one and gave up after about fifty pages - it felt very YA, and sadly, I'm considerably closer to OAP. I'm also very averse to the "WereVamp" stories which sell by the bazillion nowadays. But so are my teenage kids. So - am I just a crusty old reader with overly conservative views on what makes fiction great?

Haha!!! Think I can join you there Dale ;) LOL

message 1674: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Actually, the first two HP books have very baby-ish style. There is a noticeable difference between the first two and the last five.
And there are hardly any vampires. I think they're mentioned briefly in book #2, but its definitely not like those crappy paranormal romance books, like Twilight or Vampire Academy.
There are some werewolves, but again, its the furthest thing from Jacob Black you could imagine.

The books are actually amazing. I dont think they're just childrens stories about magic. There is so much more. The series is full of moral messages, two that come to mind are: "Love is the most important thing in the world" & "Killing rips the soul apart".
And Rowling develops, over the course of the series, into a sensational author. She writes a few beautiful quotes:

"If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals."

"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live."

"It is our choices, Harry, that show us who we truly are, far more than our abilities."

Oh well, thats your opinion. What ever floats your boat :)

*Jessica* and Joanne - I HEREWITH RAISE MY HAND TO TELL ALL AND SUNDRY THAT I TOO HAVE NEVER READ HARRY POTTER.

Oh well, the first two - the "babyish" ones.

AND I NEVER INTEND TO READ THE REST!

... short pause while Jessica & Joanne pick themselves up off their respective floors...

Chuckle. A matter of taste indeed. I just don't like paranormals. Historicals float my personal boat.

Darlings, have you ever read the history of planet Earth? There's so much bizarre, wild, and wonderful stuff in there I don't feel the need for vampires and their ilk.

That said, I also love good old-fashioned "hard" science fiction. Yep, we humans are interesting mixtures indeed.

Dear girl - as a writer myself I have nothing but respect for J.K.R. Even Stephen King says she's a superb writer. Just not into the subject matter.

Stop crying, dear. It takes all kinds to make even a booklovers' world, and we can actually be nice people too!

True - I'm probably old enough to be Jessica's mother's much older sister, and I really love the HP series, for a range of reasons but primarily because it's just a great, imaginative story. Fortunately books don't require locking ourselves into one genre to appreciate them - the wider you read the better, but if all someone likes is vampire romance then go for it(someone has to).

If people don't love HP, Jessica, we just have to let them go on their poor, misguided, deluded ways and try and understand them. Poor things.... ;D

message 1694: by [deleted user] (new)

dw jess im right with you in the harry potter train!

and Laura Daniel Radclif doesn't float your boat :O
i plan on marrying him lol!
anyhoo i just finished
The Iron Daughter (Iron Fey, #2) by Julie Kagawa i didnt really like the first one but i read this one on the promises that series gets and i quote "amazingly awesome" it doesn't its twilight but with fairies! ...so pretty much twilight lol

Ditto (altho I read the first one aloud to my daughters, and I slept straight thru one of the earlier films - came straight off a night shift).

Interest factor???? Pretty low.

message 1696: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Dale - "So - am I just a crusty old reader with overly conservative views on what makes fiction great?"

I agree with you and I'm not a crusty old reader, therefore you cant be one either. I too struggle when, trying to find any book, I am confronted with a truckload of Teen-Vampire books. Some of them are probably good, but I'm not going to find out.

Besides I have so many books I adore, and so many new ones to explore, don't feel I am missing out on anything.
