Adhityani (dhitri) I just finished reading The Tiger's Wife and gave it five stars, highly recommended! This debut made it to the shortlist of this year's Orange Prize, deservingly so! Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I am torn as to what to read next, mt TBR is too long!

message 1405: by Adhityani (new)

Adhityani (dhitri) Ugh, I started reading Roomby Emma Donoghue last night and decided, halfway through the book, that I don't want to continue reading. It's too harrowing. The book tells the story of a woman and a little boy held captive in a basement by an old man who abuses her sexually. The little boy was born in the cellar and has never seen daylight or The Outer Space, that how both called the outside world.

Donoghue says the story is inspired by the Josef Fritzl case, who held his own daughter captive in a hidden corridor in the basement for 24 years, raped her and fathered 7 children, some of them died but the rest she gave birth to in the basement. It's such a sick case, I can't even imagine what horrors the daughter must have gone through. The knowledge that this book is based on the case gave me a good idea as to where the plot is going (and it is going into a direction that I am not comfortable with at all!).

Also the story is narrated by the 5 yo boy, who is so pure and innocent and has no conception of normalcy. This made it all the more harrowing and I just couldn't get myself to read another page (lready sobbing by the time I reached the end of chapter one). Maybe that's because I am a brand new mum (still consider myself so even after 6 months) I just got so affected by the story, I can't fathom how sick this person is to do such thing to this woman and child and how traumatising it must be for the ones held captive.

Sorry to ramble, just had to share. I might go back to reading it one day, but right now I just don't have the emotional strength to continue!

it sounds like a hard story ... since having children there are quite few things I cant watch or read, and by the sounds of it, this is one of them.

Oh, I didn't know there was a story about that case (fiction or non)..I sure wouldn't be able to read it, it was so shocking!!! Bad enough seeing it on the news, and reading about it in the papers, no, no, no!!!!!

I remember checking this book out on GR..The cover of it reminded me of the Google logo because of the colours. I was very suprized when I read the blurb.

I think you've just confirmed for me that I won't be reading this book.

message 1412: by Maggie (new)

Maggie I did read it, and gave it 3 stars. I found the boy incredibly annoying (maybe I'm a hard hearted bitch?), and the story finished in a most unbelievable manner. Certainly wouldn't recommend it as a brilliant read, although many people seem to think so.

Oh, you need to persist! The halfway mark is where the book turns completely! I loved it. The escape scene had me doing the equivalent of hands in front of the eyes in a film (see my review).

Ooooh will deinitely have a think... too tempting! But I have started reading Kate Grenvill's
The Secret River and meant to hop right onto the 'sequel' The Lieutenant so maybe will re-read Room after that. But even now I am cringing at the thought of leafing through the pages again, the story's haunting me already...

message 1417: by Dale (new)

Dale Renton (dalerenton) I haven't read anything from the late David Gemmell for a while but am a huge fan. Currently reading http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38...
and as usual with Gemmell's work, thoroughly enjoying.
David Gemmell is often described as a great writer of 'Heroic Fanatasy' but what is sometimes overlooked is he is a master of dilemma. Characters in Gemmell's works are "damned if they do, damned if they don't" and that makes for great reading.

Haven't read The Secret River, it's on my TBR but I loved The Lieutenant. A book on the same man, Lieutenant William Dawes, is Ashley Hay's "The Body in the Clouds", set in 3 time periods, definitely worth a read.

Yeah I wrote about MK Hume and her books before. Have you read the Arthur trilogy before the Merlin trilogy? She's an amazing author. if you haven't read the Arthur ones I really encourage it. You'll love it. =)

Thanks, you have just reminded me that I mean to read her books. Off to the library website to reserve some now (especially as they will count towards the Aussie Reader's Challenge).

I would finish the book if I were you Dhitri. It's a quick read, and I'd be interested in what you think of the ending.

Hi Dzintra. I've read a couple of kate Morton books. I enjoyed
The House at Riverton (aka The Shifting Fog). It's great when you find an author whose work you enjoy isn't it?

Oooh, an Arthurian story. I quite like Arthur / Camelot / Morgana le Fey stories, ever since I read Zimmer Bradley's [book:The Mists of Avalon
. I think I read a few Arthur books when I was younger too. I now belong to the "Arthuriana - All Things Arthurian Group" on Goodreads. If you like this book, Jacinta maybe you could check out that group for more ideas?

I own quite a few Arthur style books myself too if you want any suggestions.

Jacinta Hoare | 62 comments Hi Shelly
No I haven't read MK Hume's other trilogy. I was at the airport yesterday waiting for my CNS/SYD flight and the airport bookshop has the 2nd and 3rd of the Arthur trilogy only so I chose the Merlin book.

I have a thing about airport bookshops, I always buy a new book and often try a new author. Has become a bit of a tradition for me :)

You should read it if you get a chance. I haven't read any of the Merlin trilogy yet. I've talked to the author though. She's amazing and so kind. Enjoy! =)
