Mosca | 13 comments Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson is the next book I plan to read. A note inside the jacket refers to the book as a "first volume in what promises to be an epoch making masterpiece". This statement seems to imply that this book is the first of a series or duet of books.

The book I have is a public library version of the early hardback 1999 edition. So I'm not certain whether this was an early intent of the author's, and whether he ever will (or did) write that "second volume".

I did a Google search for "Cryptonomicon Sequel" an recieved a confusing collection of blog entries, reviewer comments, and a number of poorly linked references to an interview (date?) with the author, where he was supposed to have said something of the sort.

Does anyone here know anything more definitive than I could find?

Thanks in advance.

Lori There really isn't a sequel to it, altho The Baroque Cycle does have Laurence Waterhouse's ancestor several centuries earlier.

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For Cryptonomicon is pretty well self-contained (and excellent, BTW). As mentioned, there are ties between a number of characters in it and the Baroque Cycle (which takes place a few centuries earlier).

I don't know if it was originally planned as a stand-alone or not, but I also know not to trust anything written on a jacket cover. The jacket of the book I'm currently reading has some of the characters' names wrong, while a book I read about a month ago had all of the events (thus the cause-effect of the description) in completely the wrong order.
