I'm going to see if I can write something (although I should be writing my presentation for Tuesday morning... oh well!) but I've never done it before so I have a question. Can it be under the word limit, as long as it's not over?

Yea, if you want to write less I don't see a problem with that. You aren't giving yourself an extra advantage over everyone else like you would if you wrote more.
