People are leaving ratings for this book, but I haven't seen it for sale anywhere yet. Is it actually in print now?

... interesting point that. If you go to the "best users" on this site, you'll see people who have 1 000s of books - but ask them about it and they don't have a clue. I recon plenty of "readers" are merely adding the books to their list for kicks. If you really want to lay your hands on the book, Google it, or go to Alibris, they're fairly good at tracing rare books.
The vendor Baker & Taylor have "Publisher Cancelled" for this title. The major retailers and Alibris don't have it listed.

Thank you - this book was inadvertently added among the books I truly read - I am taking this book off my list.
I wish Putnam would get a ghost writer to finish this book so all of us Cat Who fans can have closure.
I imagine the publisher would have to clear it with Earl Bettinger, Lilian's husband, before they could actually find someone to finish her book and publish it, as she decided to stop publication herself as she was too ill to finish writing it. She could have given them permission at the time to have someone finish it for her upon her death but apparently didn't do so. I wish she had, I would love to read it myself! That was a heck of a place to leave the series, with Polly telling Qwill she was leaving for a "temporary" job in England that would have her gone for two or three years! No real closure there at all, I want to know what happens next!
The Cat who smelled smoke must have been out for a short time because I read it. If it was not finished by Lilian someone else must have finished it. I did not like the ending - the first of the Cat Who books that I did not like.
The Cat Who Smelled Smoke is the last book that Lilian finished. She was working on the next book in the series when she died. She knew she was dying, and was working with the publisher to get the book ready, when she realized she wasn't going to be around long enough to see the book published, so she stopped the publication of the book, and stated that she didn't want someone else finishing it for her, so it is still officially unfinished. I believe that she even specified in her will, or in some other legal document, that no one was allowed to finish it after her death, and her husband decided to uphold her decision and not allow anyone to finish it.I do agree with you about the ending though. I was hoping that it would be resolved in the next book, but then found out the next book, which would have been number 30, was never going to be published, so now we'll never know how it would have turned out. So Qwill will be forever waiting for Polly's three years in England to be done and for her to come back home to him (hopefully). Yeah, not happy doesn't begin to cover it, but what can you do?
