Dottie | 27 comments I am reading "The Brothers Karamazov" by Dostoyevsky.
Have you ever tried curling up with your lap top in bed? Its not the same. That said I am enjoying it. I have head in the grape vine that there are machines that you can upload E books to that make it easier to read them.

Angela (asands) I have downloaded direct onto my iphone but haven't got round to reading any yet. It just doesn't appeal to me that much

Dottie | 27 comments Ya, I know what you mean, its almost like part of the excitment of reading a book is "turning the page"

Meredith (meredithgayle) | 23 comments I've never read E-Books.

Cecilia | 359 comments Personally, I want a book in my hands to read & feel the pages. I'm a bibliophile & collect books...especially "old" books. It's just not the same with ebooks. I know they are the current thing...but I don't think I could go for them.

Amazon has the "Kindle". I think that's the most popular reading machine choice right now. I seem to hear a lot about it. Martha Stewart talks about her's all the time.

I’m on the fence!

My problem with e-books is the cost. While you can get some e-books for free the cost of newer books is about the same as buying the book in the store. I would much, much rather plunk down the $7 - $20 and have a book to keep for all time than spend the $300 plus on the electronic devise and then the $7 - $20 more for each book as well. Besides - you don’t have worry about your physical book running out of battery power.

The idea of it is appealing (especially for those who travel a lot). It would be nice to have a library of books to select from without having to carry around all the books. The option of being able to download books anywhere is also cool.

But -- I think the option of downloading to the I-touchs or I-phones is a more convenient option than the electronic book devises. You could have your e-books and MP3 versions of audio books. Besides the plethora of other things the I-devices offer. . . . :)

You still run into that pesky battery problem though. . .

Just my 2 cents.

Dottie | 27 comments This is my first E book and I echo your comment, to the point that I am now off on another book and will look for The Brothers Karamazov in book form.

Betty (nightreader) I do not like them, Sam I Am! After several years of proofreading and formatting university manuscripts I am tired of it. Now retired I've rediscovered the joy of reading books. As I once stated, reading electronically compared to a book in hand is like cuddling a Barbie doll instead of a teddy bear. There is also the cost of a reader, the updating, the batteries?, and having just read the non-fiction Brain Surgeon, I would consider it also a health risk. I have already quit other groups which have begun to use ebooks for reviewing. Too much like my old job from which I have retired very happily. The only positive I can think of is that presumably if you want to refer back to something read earlier in the book they probably have a search function. Oh, yeah, I don't have a mobile phone, ipod, mp3 player or whatever else I'm told I can download onto. Don't get me wrong, I love computers, we are completely compatible, and I do quite well with solving my own tech problems. I just want a book for reading and relaxing.

Dottie | 27 comments Thank you all for responding to the question.
My job takes me all over the United States, so, I have been looking at my options. I take an average of 5 to 6 books with me. Then there is the surprise stops along the way, for book stores seen advertised on billboards, " ALL BOOKS $3". I just cannot pass one up. In the past, I would go to the library, check out audio books, and upload to an I POD. I found that I am a person who needs to "SEE" in order to retain. In addition, I found that I preferred to hear a male voice instead of a female. In the end, I was missing out the essential parts of the book and would have to hear it repeatedly.
Then I read about the Kindle, but have tossed this back and forth in my mind as I place a majority of the books I read in my library to enjoy once again. With a product like the Kindle and the I POD, one would not have the pleasure of returning to the book. It is almost like when film went primarily to digital. One no longer has the photo albums at hand to share.
Thank You again,
Dottie

Betty (nightreader) Good analogy Dottie!

Kristina (k_boroff) | 2 comments I'm one of those people that love a good book any way I can get it. I have been listening to books on CD for sometime now, I was commuting a hour (one way) everyday so they saved me. Now I have tried the e-books, it worked if I was stuck at work and there wasn't much to do but I hate it at home. I have never down loaded one to a Ipod or Mp3 player since I have yet to buy one for myself but I do not believe I would use that either. I love listening to the audio books but I dont like having the head phones on all the time.

Sue Ouellet-Cofsky I am an ebook junkie and there are TONS of great ebooks available for nothing (project gutenberg) and some very low cost ones as well....I usually have two ebooks going and a "regular" book going at the same time. I have the Sony PRS-505 which has tons of books on it and I also have an itouch that has books on it. It brings my book addiction to a whole new level....

I had not heard of project gutenberg, thanks for the information.

Betty (nightreader) I just discovered on a recent trip that I don't like audio books, either. I'm too distracted by scenery & wildlife. On the other hand maybe I would enjoy them if I had some free quiet time to listen.

LORRAINE | 18 comments My back hurts too much when I sit too long at the computer so I don't buy ebooks.

Leana (craftychick) I can't handle reading on a computer screen so I don't use them. I love audio books though so I wish more books came in that format. I do want a Kindle though because from what I understand it isn't like reading on a computer screen at all. As far as reading on the computer, can't do it for long periods at a time. But I would love to read on a Kindle or another similar brand.

message 17: by Sue (new)

Sue Ouellet-Cofsky See I don't use my computer to read ebooks...I read them on my Sony PRS-505. Handles just like a real book and actually easier to read in bed...no bulk..I have over 180 books on mine so even as I ride in the car I can always find something to read....

message 18: by Leana (new)

Leana (craftychick) I am jealous Sue. Some day I will get one.

message 19: by Sue (new)

Sue Ouellet-Cofsky I got it as a birthday gift and let me tell you I think it is one of the best gifts I have ever been given...it feeds my addiction for books and uses so much less room :)
