The Space Between Us is by Thrity Umrigar and is set in Bombay current day. I guess all of us have places that draw us: the mountains or the ocean or certain areas of the world that fascinate us, where we say to ourselves, "Someday, I want to go to---" India interests me, but to be honest, it doesn't draw me to it like other places in the world, so I wasn't sure if I'd like the book. But as I got into it, I realized this book is not about India. It's about two women, one the servant and one the mistress, who both feel that they do not belong where they are in the world. I don't know about you, but there are times when I just want to shout out to the world, "This is not supposed to be my life--with these people, in this place. I don't know what happened, but I don't belong here!" If you've ever felt that way, then this book will speak to you. I love it, and there are places in the story where I'm reading through my tears.
