Books on the Nightstand discussion
What are you reading JUNE 2013?
I'm currently enjoying E.F. Benson's nicely nasty tale of a village "cultural empress," Queen Lucia (1920), and dipping from time to time into a well-written look at uncommon animals, The Kingdom of Rarities by Eric Dinerstein. Next up: Dick Van Dyke's autobiography; Darwin's Watch, the third in Terry Pratchett's half-fiction "Science of Discworld" series; Catherine Drinker Bowen's Biography: The Craft And The Calling; and (with an eye toward our community theater's 87th season) a stage play that combines the best bits of the Lucia novels, John Van Druten's Make Way for Lucia.
I read "Constellation of Vital Phenomena" just before Ann & Michael mentioned it on the show; it is excellent! Also, just finished "We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves" ... really interesting; I recommend both of these. Now, I am reading "Life After Life" by Kate Atkinson - - and getting ready to read "And the Mountains Echoed" because I am going to see Khaled Hosseini talk next week!!

Next was "Life After Life" - I really liked it but my old lady brain was confused in a few places. Just started "We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves". I did read "Inferno" somewhere in there - no comment!
reading life after life by Kate Atkinson and want to start Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard
Jan wrote: "Reading "A Constellation of Vital Phenomena." wow!"I finished A Constellation of Vital Phenomena this weekend and I agree with your comment completely. For a debut novel I found it completely amazing. I can see myself reading Anthony Marra for years to come.
Read both Shadow and Bone and The Solitude of Prime Numbers this weekend, and loved them both. Trying to figure out what to read next, thinking about All That Is.
Just started When the Killing's Done. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/86... today. I've never read TC Boyle before.
Just started
. I'm afraid to get too far into it as I may have to take off work. Also, have read 5 of the stories in
, just wonderful and I'm listening to
in the car.I just recruited a new member, she goes by Mary (Bookhounds). She writes a couple of blogs and I have known her for many years through another site. If you see her around, please make her feel welcome.
Just finished The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantyne and started The Bone People by Keri Hulme ... Have read The Bone people before but ages ago and fancied a second read :)
I've just started listening to The Golden Compass audio on my commute. My sit down and read time is very limited this month :-(
Just finished reading "The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer. Bleh. NOT interesting - did not like. Listening to Bill Bryson's, "At Home: A Short History of Private Life" on CD. This is more interesting, but I'm glad I'm listening rather than reading; it's NOT a short history and is thick with factoids. I don't know if I'd be able to sit with it for long. Highly entertaining though (Bryson reads it and I enjoy his narration a great deal)and so fun to discover the history of many familiar sayings so common to us today.Planning on picking up one of the two Malcom Gladwell books on my stack next: "Outliers" and What the Dog Saw."

So did you take the day off work, Janet?

Just finished Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King which was excellent on the plane ride home from booktopia.About to crack open Ex-Patriots by Peter Clines...can't wait!
Linda wrote: "Janet wrote: "Just started

I finished The Alchemist and then read Gathering Blue and Murder on the Orient Express. Next up is Life After Life. So may people have loved this book. I'm hoping to love it, too!
Just finished Stephen King's Joyland. It was great! Definitely a throwback to the old days and King was at his best. After a few novels that, I thought, he did a poor job bringing closure to, Joyland was a delight. Just getting started on Patricia Volk's Shocked. Has anyone read this?
Toni wrote: "Finished Cutting for Stone (wonderful!) and am now starting The Paris Wife."I read the paris wife , enjoyed it but didn,t put ernest heningway in a good light, meaning he was rather a cad, not a very nice person, but it was good.
Susan wrote: "Reading
. Trying to revisit some classics this summer. It's become a bit of a tradition for me."Lovely tradition. I revisit Willa Cather and Eudora Welty each summer.
Tonya wrote: "reading life after life by Kate Atkinson and want to start Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard"Really liked Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard , great look at history, and well written - I thought.

Ditto, Robin. That was a real insight into our history. I had know idea about Bell.

Finishing
- which proved to be an excellent choice for the plane ride home. Next up -
.I'm all over the place in the wake of Booktopia...
I just finished The Snowman by Jo Nesbo and loved it. I want to read more of the series but am not sure if I should go back and start from the beginning or move on to the next book. I'd love input from those of you familiar with them.
Sharman wrote: "I just finished The Snowman by Jo Nesbo and loved it. I want to read more of the series but am not sure if I should go back and start from the beginning or move on to the next book. I started with The Snowman too and loved it, then went back and read them in no particular order. I haven't finished yet, but do enjoy picking them up every now and then.
Happy reading Sharman!
Sharman,I agree with Chanda...I've read a couple and I think you can read them in any order which has been helpful because some of them haven't been available in the U.S. in order.
Yes, re: Jo Nesbo. The first Harry Hole book to be published here was Redbreast, but that is actually the 3rd in the series. The Bat is #1, and that will be out here this summer. I've heard that the first two are not Nesbo's best, though as a completist I will definitely read them. He definitely gets better as a writer as the books go on. I loved The Snowman. You really can read each book on its own, though you lose a bit of the psychological development of the character and possibly some references to earlier cases that might be considered spoilers if you really remember and retain the info.
I kind of got the impression in The Snowman that there was an overall meta story arc involving Harry's erstwhile girlfriend and her son. There was some mystery as to who the father was, and I wondered if it wasn't Harry himself.
Black Boy, The Diary of a Young Girl, Heir to the Empire. It's hard to keep up with reading while in school- slowly but surely!
Mary wrote: "Elizabeth wrote: "I started
The Middlesteins."Me too!"
I have this on the reserve queue at my local library, as my husband is Jewish I should find it interesting.
I have started in on a reread of one of my all time favorite novels LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA.

I've finished it and found it interesting. Very sad really.
Really liked the audio of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... Also liked, but did not love My Ideal Bookshelf. My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I've just started Under the Dome by Stephen King on audio. At 35 hours, it is a chunkster and should take me a while. I am already hooked. Also reading How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by Mohsin Hamid in print. What a way with language he has.
The owner of Village Books raved about The Tilted World, so I'm reading it and loving it. Taken by the characters, the writing, and the 1927 Mississippi flood.
I am now reading Jonathan Evison's All About Lulu. I didn't know about it until I saw it at Village in their Booktopia display. It is fantastic. No pain, no gain.
Cindy wrote: "I have started the Game of Thrones Series. Really liked the HBO series."I am on the 3rd book, but I have only watched Season 1 on HBO, I thought it was great
I just finished Vampires in the Lemon Grove: Stories. Russell just blew me away with her imagination and talent. I'm about 3/4 through And the Mountains Echoed. Hosseini never disappoints me, he is just a natural born storyteller. I've got several audios going and this is where I get into trouble, just too scattered and probably won't finish all of them The Kitchen House, Is This Tomorrowand The Silver StarI'm like a guy in a bar who can't pick which pretty girl he wants to talk to....lol.
I'm reading Murder in the Bastille by Cara Black. I love her mysteries with detective Aimee LeDuc where Paris seems like a character as well.
Had to stop Life After Life, couldn't get into it right now will try another time. Finished the silence of Bonaventure arrow by Rita Legenski loved it!!
Kalen wrote: "I am now reading Jonathan Evison's All About Lulu. I didn't know about it until I saw it at Village in their Booktopia display. It is fantastic.
