Club Dead by Charlaine Harris
Book Completed: 7/29/2013
Rating: ★★★★
Continue Series: Yes
Review:
First off, thank you for less Bill! I swear that is why I was putting off reading this one for so long. He is just such a bland character. I would much prefer if Sookie got together with either Eric or Alcide in a future book.
What I liked about this book was that Sookie showed a lot more of her independence in this book compared to the previous two books. This book was a lot more my speed although there was absolutely no going into details really in this book. Everything happened very quickly and then finished. It was probably my favorite so far in the series...granted a good chunk of that may be due to there not being any Bill in the story.

Shelf: Paranormals
Read: 7/29/13
Rated: 3 Stars
Review: So I did enjoy this story, but would have to classify it as somewhat of a transition book. There wasn't a lot going on, but the details were necessary in order for the story to progress. In this book we learn more about the shifters and their relationship with the vampires, as well as some important history. Merit explores her feelings for Morgan and Ethan, as well as adjusts to her new existence and abilities. There were also several new storylines introduced. All of this should make for an entertaining next book, which I definitely intend to read!
I am done with my book. It was really excellent. The review is a bit biiiig!

Shelf: Supernatural
Book: Written in Red by Anne Bishop
Date Finished:July 29
Rating:★★★★★
MY REVIEW:
If I could give 10 stars to this book I seriously would!
I loved loved loved this book! It was neither too slow, nor too fast, but set a pace of its own. I was totally hooked from the very first paragraph.
Anne Bishop's attention to detail is stunning in itself. Books like these are why I love Urban Fantasy genre so much. I really liked the naming conventions in this book. A bookstore and hotel/cafe owned by a werewolf is called Howling Good Reads and A Little Bite! The story in itself is set in Thaisia. There has always been a conflict between Humans and the Others. The Others, or Terra Indigene include a variety of species. The last names of most of them signify what kind of species they are- "Wolfgard" is a shifter wolf, "Crowgard" is a shifter crow, and so on. There are vampires, or Sanguinati, hawks, crows, lions, a bear,Elementals like Winter and Spring, who have control over the elements,a Coyote name Jester etc. The days of the week are also named differently- Moonsday, Sunsday, Earthsday, Thaisday and so on.
The flow flow of the story was so smooth. In Lakeside Courtyard, Simon Wolfgard the owner of Howling Good Reads, suddenly finds a human woman Meg Corbyn in the shop for the position of a Human Liaison, which they had advertised . Meg looks like she has escaped from something. Simon, inspite of his doubts, accepts her for the position. Meg soon begins to learn, in more ways than one about dealing with the feared Terra Indigene.
But Meg has a secret of her own. The Controller of the Compound from which had escaped before coming to the Lakeside Courtyard, want her back desperately, will go to any end to get her back.
Not to mention, the Others have no compunctions about eating human (alive too), and the rest of the human parts are sold as "Special Meat"... Meg now has to learn living with the Others, and not become their food, all the while escaping from the Controller , who is very determined to her her back.
Meg's relationship with Sam Wolfgard, the pup, was heart-warming. Meg is very kind and considerate to everybody, and takes everything in her stride. The author beautifully portrays how Meg integrates herself into a "Humans are just Meat" world, and slowly becomes a positive influence.
Tess, Henry Beargard, Winter and the other Elementals, Vlad and Erebus Sanguinati, Jester, and Simon Wolfgard were all great characters- scary but great. The humans in the Courtyard -Harry, Merri, Heather, Ruthie, Monty, and Karl were all wonderful characters too. I hated Asia Crane with a real passion. Anne has a way to portray the character in such a way that they become very real to you.
I can't believe we have to wait a whole year for the next book.

Book: Affliction by Laurell K. Hamilton
Series: Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #22
Finished: 31/07/2013
Rating: ★★★
Review:
The story started on a very good note: Anita get's a call from Micah's mother informing her that his father is dying of an unusual preternatural infection. Since the attack came from a zombie and it's Anita stock and trade....it really looked like something I would love to read.
Since there is travelling involved, it's the perfect time to perform the info dump and discuss in details all the intricacies of Anita's relationships with everyone in her life. This plot device has it's use but after 22 books it paints Anita as being dumb about supernatural politics, slow to analyze people's feelings and downright whiny. Fortunately after the 1/3 book, every feathers are back into place and all the lengthy discussions have taken place while Micah's father is dying in a few hours but certain conversations cannot be rushed...
Once this unpleasant business is done the rest of the book is mainly centered on the action. Anita is in her element and is actually hunting the killers. Edward enters the scene and it's great fun when he's around....especially when he get's to use his flamethrower (Edward is many things but only a friend to Anita so don't get ideas).
As Edward so aptly put it: "You have a zombie apocalypse and you don’t invite me." ...so that Anita can respond: "I didn’t know it was a zombie apocalypse until we were in it, and for the love of God do not say the phrase zombie apocalypse where the media can get hold of it."
I liked the take on the flesh eating zombies and the fact that the story is Asher-free for once.
It is one of the better books since the series took a left with the ardeur, while it's still present it does not dominate the story. It's a nice change.

Book: Leopard's Prey by Christine Feehan
Finished: July 31
Rating: 3.5★
Review:
This was an okay installment to the series. Remy was a great alpha male, all broody, handsome and in control. Bijou doesn't know she is a leopard. After growing up with an extremely neglectful/harmful rockstar of a father, she returns to the swamps to the only "family" she ever had with Remy and his sister. They were the only people that showed any true care for her when she was growing up. When Bijou returns, all of Remy's past protective instincts for her returns to the surface and he realizes she is leopard and probably going to shift for the first time soon. The problem I had is how horrible everyone is to Bijou. Because all people loved her father so much, they either ask her for her autograph/photo then turn on her, or just automatically turn on her. She is also a singer and has decided to partially retire to only perform at her recently purchased nightclub in New Orleans, and the public is bitter about it. She also has a stalker leaving her notes and painting creepy things on her properties. However, she does not see the need to have a bodyguard or any kind of security with her. All during this drama, there is also a serial killer on the loose that Remy, a homicide detective, has been tracking for years. I found the killer predictable about halfway through the book, even though there were about five different suspects thrown at us throughout the book. However, because I love the series so much, I had to give it the rating I did.

Too bad they didn't call our winning shelf. I'm proud of myself for using only books already on my kindle, free books, or library books for the challenge this time. I still have way too many on my kindle, but every little bit helps. :)
I am going to read
for the tortured hero shelf.. I was hoping we could play some more.. Oh, well... It was fun to be in this team with you all...

Review: This is the third book in the Chicagoland Vampires Series and my favorite so far. Merit is still discovering more about her “inner vampire”, and her training and experiences are transforming her into the Sentinel that Cadogen House (and Ethan) wants and needs. Her interactions with Ethan, the House Master, are entertaining, to say the least; and she is beginning to fit in better with her new “family”. I particularly enjoyed the shapeshifter storyline, as we learned more of their relationships with the vampire community. There is quite a bit more action than in the previous two books, which is always a plus(in my humble opinion). The one thing missing from this story is more Mallory. She is Merit’s best friend, and since the first book, we have heard hardly anything from her. She has an interesting “talent” as well, and it would be nice to discover a little more about her role in this supernatural society. I am definitely enjoying this mythical world that has been created, and look forward to the next book in the series.

Book: After Ben by Con Riley
Finished: August 6
Rating: 3 ★
I was really hoping to read Magic Rises this week, but I guess Curran is not tortured enough to make the cut for this shelf. Instead, I already had this book checked out from the library and it was on the shelf, so it won by default. The book was a real tearjerker. I cry easily and this book made me cry like a baby. Theo is recovering from the sudden death of his partner Ben a year before. When the book starts he is still living a numb life. As he begins to wake up he starts to get to know Peter, an acceptably aged man at his gym, and Morgan, and unknown man he has begun to talk to in the political chat forum he frequents. Some of the plotline decisions were tough for me to agree with, and the rating reflects that, but the storyline was compelling and an interesting read. It turns out there is a second book in the series and I will probably read it if my library carries it.

Review:
I was a bit worried reading Kane's story. How can you make a plot with a demon possessed warrior like Disaster? By pairing him with a heroine that survived almost as bad an experience as he did.
Tink (Josephina) was totally lovable, cool powers with lots of daddy issues. It was a bit funny that Kane's demon was not on board with his chosen female and created a lot of drama.
Interesting characters were brought and plenty of William! How can you resist his out of the blue comments and quoting Fight Club while teaching Kane a lesson?
It was a long wait but worth it.

Until the next Bingo challenge.

Just now returned from a road trip... Too bad... Well, it was fun playing with you all! Looking forward to the next Challenge!
