Bree (coffeebeanbookshelf) When you're reading a book and have to stop (I know, gasp...), do you finish the chapter, get to a section where it moves on but isn't a new chapter, or just stop reading wherever you are?

Usually I try to get to the end of a chapter before putting the book down...if I can't make it that long and there's a break coming up, I'll use that.

LOL, just a random question for the day... :)

message 2: by Allison (new)

Allison I really try to finish a chapter. If i can't do that, I'll try to find a break.
However, because I've been so busy, I'm trying to find any time I can to read, so I'll read before bed and while I'm waiting to tan. And I can never guarantee where I'll be when I fall asleep, or they have my room ready, so on those occasions, I just have to stop where ever I am.

message 3: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Ideally I wait until the end of a chapter, even when I'm reading in bed at night. However, having 4 kids between the ages of 1 and 8, I sometimes will have to put a book down right in the middle of a sentence to attend to their needs (or break up a fight). :o)

message 4: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I try to wait until a chapter but sometimes I just can't, like my eyes won't stay open anymore or I've lost track of time and am running late to work. Sometimes I also get so into a book that I don't even notice chapter breaks so I'll say I'm going to stop at the next chapter but don't realize I have already started the next chapter until a few pages in.

Samantha McNulty I try to finish a chapter, or at the very least, finish a paragraph. Sometimes, I can't, but I try.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Ideally, the end of a chapter; failing that, a break in the text.

If I'm desperate, where the subject matter seems to be changing.

message 7: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments I try to finish at a chapter end. If I can't then I wait for a break or at least a thought break.

message 8: by Kristina (new)

Kristina I like stopping at the end of a chapter or at the mini breaks within a chapter, if I can.

message 9: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I usually stop so that I am on the next page (on the left hand side) otherwise I get confuse where I left off. I do have a friend who HAS to stop at the end of a chapter.

message 10: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (sureshot26) | 94 comments Chapter's my preference, but since I often get cut off in my reading by arriving at my destination, I usually settle for the start of a page.

message 11: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments Back when I was working, I read before went to sleep- I stopped whereever I was when I started nodding off.
These days strangely enough, I hardly ever read in bed- and I usually try for the end of a chapter.

message 12: by Leora (new)

Leora Being a bit on the OCD side, I always try for the end of a chapter or a break. However, since doing the Spring challenge and reading in every spare moment I have (and even ones I don't, like hiding a book in my planner while my students are eating lunch or doing quiet assignments), I just stop at the first paragraph on the left hand side.

message 13: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments When I have to stop, I always stop after the first paragraph on the left hand page. I'm always consistent about it so whenever I pick the book back up, I always know exactly where I left off.

message 14: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (sherylmarasi) | 93 comments I usually try for the end of the chapter...unfortunately sometimes it's sooner :(

message 15: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (cassielo) | 42 comments I stop at wherever I am when I don't feel like reading anymore or have to put the book down. That includes mid-sentence.

I have this thing where I think that if I can't find my place in a book without a marker, then I haven't been reading well enough.

message 16: by GracieKat (new)

GracieKat | 864 comments I try to wait until the end of a chapter but if I'm rushed or falling as;eep then I'll at least wait until the end of a paragraph. The end of the chapter thing can be bad, too because if it's a good book I'll want to keep reading.

message 17: by M (new)

M | 15 comments Usually I have 10 seconds notice that I need to stop, so I try to end the paragraph, and, failing that, the end of the sentence.

message 18: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) Depends if I'm listening (end of segment) or reading (end of chapter). ;o)

Samantha McNulty Liz wrote: "Depends if I'm listening (end of segment) or reading (end of chapter). ;o)"

Oh yeah, I never thought about audio

message 20: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I prefer to stop at the end of a chapter, but like others I read in bed at night so sometimes I just can't keep my eyes open long enough. I'll stop pretty much anywhere if I have to. I have a good memory so I can always remember what's been happening.

message 21: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (lissieb7) I can't stand stopping mid sentence or mid paragraph. I usually stop at the end of a chapter. Sometimes, like lastnight, I stop at the end of paragraph. I must feel as though I've come to a stopping point, like the end of a chapter or section.

message 22: by Julie (new)

Julie | 52 comments I'm like Melissa, I have to get to a stopping point, such as a sentence that ends at the bottom of the page, or better yet, a new chapter or other demarcation point. If I absolutely have to stop reading, I usually find myself re-reading what I had read prior!

message 23: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo | 338 comments I just try to stop at a natural break in the narrative and that's not always at the end of a paragraph. There are some authors that like to leave little cliffhangers at the end of a chapter. That being said, most of the time I can't stop reading a novel (it's not a good sign when I can!), so I try to plan ahead so I can finish it in one big gulp. Non-fiction, I can put down so that tends to be what I read when I know I'm going to be interrupted (my car books and lunchbreak books are all nonfiction).

message 24: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (ioanasaunt) | 16 comments If there's more time, I'll end the chapter. But if there's not, I'll stop wherever I am. I'll just memorize the page because I don't use bookmarks. If it's a number like page 121, I'll round off it, so I would've to memorize 120 instead.

But if I really really so much time, I'll probably end the book. XD

message 25: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Joanne wrote: "If there's more time, I'll end the chapter. But if there's not, I'll stop wherever I am. I'll just memorize the page because I don't use bookmarks. If it's a number like page 121, I'll round off it..."

I used to be able to memorize page numbers slowly though I stopped being able to memorize anything. I wish I still could though.

message 26: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey If I can.. a chapter, definitely a paragraph, unless I'm at work...

message 27: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 157 comments I usually always to stop at the end of a chapter. But, if a chapter are 12+ pages, I stop at a thought break. This is what usually happens if I'm reading in bed & hubby is ready for bed.

message 28: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) End of a chapter is preferred. But sometimes I just can't make it (like reading before sleep time). Otherwise, the end of a paragraph. I hate to stop mid sentence, but can't be helped sometimes if I literally nod off and my face falls into the book!

message 29: by Dara (new)

Dara | 88 comments Are you supposed to stop? lol...I try to finish a chapter but of course the end of the chapter usually has some snag to keep you turning pages into the next chapter. I have been known to stay up all night reading...

Diane (dianedj) Dara wrote: "Are you supposed to stop? lol...I try to finish a chapter but of course the end of the chapter usually has some snag to keep you turning pages into the next chapter. I have been known to stay up ..."

Gosh, I wish I could stay up all night reading. But when my eyes want to close, I'm a goner!! If I even try to continue, I just end up re-reading what I "thought" I read as I was falling asleep LOL!

Atishay | 1451 comments Same with me Apurv. Never stop in the middle of a narration.

message 32: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) I try to stop at a chapter end or at least a specifically delineated section within a chapter. If I can't do that for some reason, I will often restart the chapter or section when I return to the book.

message 33: by Cliff (new)

Cliff Ball (cliffball) | 13 comments I haven't done this in a while(maybe because I'm getting old! ha ha), but I've laid down on my couch with a book at 9 am and didn't finish reading until I was really sleepy at around midnight. Now, usually, I read two or three chapters and stop. I'm learning moderation!

message 34: by Mackenzie (new)

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 28 comments I usually try and read until the end of the chapter. But if I can't wait long enough for the end of the chapter I'll stop in between paragraphs. The paragraphs with a big space in between. :)

message 35: by Liz (new)

Liz I try to stop at the end of a chapter...last night before the bf and I watched a DVD I made him wait to start it until I had finished my chapter. In fairness, it's a book he lent me and has been nagging me to read!

message 36: by Abbie K. (new)

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments I usually wait to the end of a chapter, but only if I absolutely have to...like I find myself checking for leaks in the eyelids. I once took my book into the examining room to keep reading, but I wasn't too worried since the doctor was notorious for being late. Haven't tried it with the dentist yet, but I wouldn't rule it out.

message 37: by Lauren (new)

Lauren In a perfect world I would not have to stop hehe. However I do try to finish a chapter. If unable to then I go to the nearest break or paragraph.

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) first of all, I hate to quit reading once I get into a book that is hard to put down but when reality shows up I like to stop at the next chapter - if I am close to finishing the book completely, then I try & finish....then I have to wonder for all of about 10 sec what I am going to read next.

message 39: by Bedtime Booknerd (new)

Bedtime Booknerd (shawtygurl15) I usually finish the chapter...its easier for me to remember where I left off & what happened...

message 40: by Abbie K. (new)

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments Why oh why does the phone or doorbell only go off when you get to the good parts? I've had to stop reading when I put things on the stove, because I ruined a pan boiling the water out of it. I even gave my classes the occasional free reading day because I was in the middle of a book I didn't want to put down!

Anyone ever ignored the doorbell because you were reading?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Only when reading in the bathtub! I think.

message 42: by Liz (new)

Liz Yes, but that's understandable. I always assume anyoen who is visiting me does not want me to answer the door in a towel or a robe!

message 43: by Abbie K. (new)

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments How about a sign for the door...

message 44: by Liz (new)

Liz Good thinking! Also, my boyfriend thinks I am really weird for wanting to stop at the end of chapters. Today we went to the Eden Project in Cornwall and when we got off the train on the way home, we had to pause briefly in the station so I could read two more paragraphs to finish a chapter. He is a reader too, you'd think he'd get it!

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments When I'm reading in bed I often stop at the end of a paragraph. But generally I don't mind stopping mid sentence. I usually just restart the paragraph anyway.

message 46: by Edith (new)

Edith | 256 comments Sounds like a lot of us are in the same boat. I try to finish the chapter.

message 47: by Ana (new)

Ana (anacnunes) I usually stop at the end of a chapter, but if one chapter is particularly wrong I try to stop somwhere coherent, where i won't find the nedd to go back and read the last page to remeber where I was.

message 48: by Taejas (new)

Taejas Kudva (kudvat) | 77 comments I'm usually satisfied with a pause in the story, even if it's not a chapter break. Well, maybe it's better to say I try to stop if it becomes obvious something is about to happen: "protagonist x arrives at the house and walks up to ring the door bell" type stuff.

Either that, or I wake up, uncrease the page, and start reading at the drool stain. :)
