L.Y. Levand (lylevand) | 208 comments I thought we could have a trivia game for the movies. :D

Example:

Person#1: While filming the scene where the Hobbits are returning to the Shire in Return of the King, Elijah Wood couldn't control the pony he was riding.

Person#2: Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf) both recorded prologues for The Fellowship of the Ring, but it was decided that Galadriel would be a better narrator.

Or we could just randomly spout things at each other, which would be just as much fun. xD What do you guys think would be more fun?

message 2: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments Hmm.. either way would be fun. Great idea :)

message 3: by johanna (jo) (last edited May 27, 2013 09:50PM) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Lol! Those are both awesome. I guess we could just spout them at each other until someone runs out? xD Your choice.

I got one -- I know that while acting the "You Shall Not Pass!" scene in the Fellowship, instead of the Balrog, Ian McKellen (Gandalf) was playing to a pingpong ball. ^_^

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments During the scene when Sam is running out to Frodo while Frodo is in the boat, Sean Astin got a large piece of glass stuck in his foot. I watched the clip to it on YouTube, and they had to stop filming to get the piece of glass out. I was thinking "Ouch that looks like it really hurt"

(And Lol about Ian and the ping pong ball :P)

message 5: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) When kicking the orc helmet in frustration after losing Pippin and Merry in the Fellowship, Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) broke two of his toes: however, he acted through it, and the breaking-toes take is the take we see in the film :) Partly why his yell is so anguished when he falls to his knees.

message 6: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments During the scene celebrating Bilbo's birthday, Billy Boyd (Pippin) didn't know that the fireworks were going to explode, so his scream was real in the take.

message 7: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) The scene where Gandalf whacked his head on the roof at Bag End in the Fellowship? That was real. The whack wasn't in the script, but Ian McKellen played through it so well that PJ kept it in.

message 8: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments Orlando Bloom (Legolas) began his horse and fight training four months before the Return of the King was planning to be filmed.

message 9: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Let's see, um ...

Oh, Orlando Bloom (Legolas) broke his rib while horse riding in the film.

message 10: by L.Y. (new)

L.Y. Levand (lylevand) | 208 comments Ah ha! Ping pong ball! I want outtakes! That would be so funny. xD

Oh, I found this one: "While filming the trilogy, Viggo Mortensen got so into character that, during a conversation with Peter Jackson, Jackson addressed him as "Aragorn" for more than half an hour, and Mortensen didn't even realize it."

message 11: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments Sean Astin won the award for best movie sidekick at the 2003 Acadamy Awards for The Return of the King. The movie also won eleven awards, including best director and best music score.

message 12: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) *cheers* Wooh! :D

Oh, the fact that 8 members of the Fellowship got the elvish word for 'nine' (9 members in the Fellowship) tattooed somewhere on their bodies: everyone but John Rhys-Davies, who sent his stunt-double in his place. Instead of an elvish 'nine', Peter Jackson received the elvish number 'ten' lol

message 13: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments Dominic Monoghan originally auditioned for the role of Frodo, but the part ended up going to Elijah Wood.

message 14: by L.Y. (new)

L.Y. Levand (lylevand) | 208 comments "Sean Bean (Boromir) was deathly afraid of riding in the helicopter that had to take the actors to and from the many filming locations. After the scene on Caradharas, the one where Boromir tries to take the ring from Frodo, Bean refused to go anywhere else by helicopter. Many times he had to take a ski lift and climb many hundred feet in full Boromir gear to get to the set."

message 15: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Oh, I love that one xD

Viggo Mortensen's son persuaded him to take the role as Aragorn.

o.0 Really??

When Frodo falls over in the snow and loses the Ring, there's a close-up of the Ring, with Frodo in the background. A giant ring of six inches in diameter had to be used to keep both Frodo and the Ring in focus.

That's one big ring. :O

The Lembas Bread that Sam and Frodo eat in the beginning of the film was actually shortbread cookies made by the art department

Oh, this isn't a trivia question, but I was commenting on an article about movie trailers on MSN, and I mentioned The Lord of the Rings trailers. I also mentioned that I thought Sean Astin did great as Sam. Surprisingly, I got a lot of thumbs down on my comment

message 21: by L.Y. (new)

L.Y. Levand (lylevand) | 208 comments What?? How can that happen? He did awesome! :/

I found this: When Frodo is leafing through Bilbo's Book in Rivendell, a page with dwarven runes is shown. The runes translate thus: "Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the keyhole." This is a reference to the map in "The Hobbit" and the runes tell of the secret entrance into The Lonely Mountain.

:D

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments I'm watching the behind the scenes featurette of The Return of the King: Extended edition, and I'm learning a lot of interesting behind the scenes tidbits. You know the scene where Frodo tells Sam to go home? That scene was never in the book. Peter Jackson and the filmwriters wanted to add that in because they wanted to add more suspense for Gollum's goal of splitting Sam and Frodo up (friendship wise). I actually didn't notice that it wasn't in the book when I first read it, now I think I'll have to go back and re read that scene, just to compare the differences. The filmwriters made some changes to the events in the chapters. A majority of the Sam and Frodo scenes in The Return of the King actually occured in The Two Towers (the book). Oh, and another interesting fact: the set crew started their work on the Minas Tirith set in 1999.

Yes; Shelob and everything actually happens at the end of The Two Towers, in the book, and The Two Towers ends with Sam realising Frodo's alive, and trying to get back to him (I think knocking himself out, too). I believe.
And they added that bit in :'( It's sad. It created so many unnecessary Frodo-haters. Some of my friends dislike him just because of that scene.

Isn't really trivia, but the beginning of The Hobbit is very clever: did anyone actually notice that Frodo had the same red book under his arm when he went off to surprise Gandalf, that he had at the beginning of the Fellowship, and was reading when Gandalf arrived?? (I hadn't watched LOTR when I watched The Hobbit last, so I didn't realise it). I just thought that was so cool.

I was irritated with that scene, lol. I knew it wasn't in there. xD But I didn't know about the Minas Tirith set. It would be cool if they took all the sets and made a theme park, like they did for Harry Potter. I want to visit Minas Tirith!

Yes! I loved it. :) I know lots of people didn't like how they tied it in, but I certainly did, lol.

Lol! Listen to this one: In the Mines of Moria, in Balin's Tomb, there are a few shots where it only shows profiles of Aragorn's face. That's because Viggo Mortensen had gone surfing with the Hobbit actors, and his surfboard came up and hit his face. The right side of his face was swollen and he had a black eye. For about a week, the filming crew was only able to shoot his profile.

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments L.Y, I agree with you about the theme park thing. But.... Don't get upset with me, but I'm not a Harry Potter fan. I respect that a lot of people like it but it never clicked with me. Hope you can still be friends with me on here regardless? I'm more Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia.

message 27: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Lol, everyone likes different things, Rach :) I'm not a Potterhead, either, or a Whovian, and yet, no matter how many times my GR friends tell me to read/watch them, and no matter how many times I politely decline, they're still my friends, and always will be ^^

I've run out of trivia off the top of my head ... I'm going to use IMDb now :)

How about this ... Sean Astin's father, John Astin, auditioned for the role of Gandalf.

Nothing to worry about. :) You're free to like or dislike whatever you want and we can still be friends. I wouldn't just dismiss you because you don't like Harry Potter.

Narnian525 wrote: "How about this: the trees in the kingdom of the elves in the fellowship of the ring extended edition were made entirely out of rubber"

o.0 Really? Rubber? Wouldn't want to hit one of those with a car, lol.

Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum, also voices the Ringwraith who says, "Shire...Baggins" to the hobbit outside Hobbiton. That's cool. That ringwraith was freaky, though, lol.

message 30: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Agreed :)

Hahaha! Look at this ...

Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan spent so much time up the tree (TreeBeard) during the making of the the film that they spent their time between takes writing a screenplay. Additionally, it was so difficult to get up and down to their "perches" that they were left there during breaks while the rest of the crew went off to eat, though someone was kind enough to pass theirs up to them.

I can't help but wondering what the screenplay was about ... xDD that sounds hilarious.

A screenplay? Maybe it's about two people who got stuck up a tree, and threw things at the people down below. xD I'd watch that!

How about this one: In the scene near the end when the Fellowship is canoeing down the river, Legolas and Gimli's boat capsized because of a crew member trying to prevent them from floating downstream. Gimli started to sink because of the chain mail, and rescue boats came swarming out to save them.

Heehee, me too xD. I wonder if they did chuck things down at people, lol. I would. ^^ Just the mental image of everyone going off for lunchbreak and leaving them up the tree, lol! xD

Haha!

:O --
EASTER EGG: In the extended DVD version on the first movie disc, go to chapter 29-30 under the scene selection. Press down under chapter 30 and a gold ring will appear. It's a hidden extra of the MTV awards for Andy Serkis receiving best virtual performance.

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments The costume designers put together so many battle costumes for The Return of the King that their fingernails began rubbing off

Viggo Mortenson bonded with his filming horse so much, after filming completed he bought it off of it's original owner

It took an hour and a half to attach the hobbit feet to the four actors (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd)

And, this one is funny: the male actors would play pranks on each other on the set, with hip hop music :P Ha ha The Lord of the Rings cast is awesome

Narnian525 wrote: "Ha ha. Aren't they? :D Well, them, the iCarly cast, The Chronicles of Narnia cast, and the Firefly cast for me. "

The cast of Narnia was awesome, too. My sister watched iCarly for a long time, and my favorite character was Spencer. xD But I haven't heard of Firefly. What is it?

The scene in which the Fellowship mourns Gandalf in Moria was filmed, ironically, before the group had even met Ian McKellen.

:O

When the Fellowship start poking their heads out of the snow after they've been buried on the mountain, Orlando Bloom (Legolas) is coming out of real snow (the rest are on a set).

xD That would be cold!

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Yes! It would be! xD

Peter Jackson's original plan was to exclusively hire British actors for the roles of the hobbits. As it turned out, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan were the only ones, and one of the tasks he charged them with was to coach Elijah Wood and Sean Astin in the ways of British pub culture.

Lol. That's funny. xD

During the Council of Elrond, leaves are continually falling in the background to suggest that this is a meeting that is taking place outside. This meant about half a dozen crew members were positioned above the set, dropping leaves at various intervals. This also meant that the production department had to collect sacks and sacks of leaves during autumn, and of course dead leaves turn brown fairly quickly. Which also meant that every single one of those leaves had to be individually painted.

message 41: by johanna (jo) (new)

johanna (jo) (johannad_m) Film directors are mad. What they do, for one scene ... o_O

The Main Door of Helm's Deep was built so heavily and so well that the real battering ram that was built to knock down the gates failed to do so until the door was weakened. Someone had built the door a little bit too well and Peter Jackson can be heard on the Extended Edition DVD commenting that if they had to defend a castle, he would want the WETA workshop guys to build the door.

message 42: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 286 comments This is cool: When filming wrapped up for The Return of the King, the cast and crew gave Peter Jackson a gift to say thank you for directing them. It was a 4D camera.

message 43: by L.Y. (new)

L.Y. Levand (lylevand) | 208 comments Yes, they certainly are mad. And the actors aren't any better: Viggo Mortensen kept his sword with him at all times off set so that he could remain in character. He was questioned several times by police after reviewing his training sessions with the sword and being spotted by members of the public.

xD

Yup! I want to visit New Zealand, lol.

A rubber puppet with a horrific face was superimposed over Ian Holm's face when Bilbo Baggins catches a glimpse of the ring again in Rivendell. Holm was so delighted with the puppet that the design team had a cast iron version of it made for his mantelpiece and gave it to him as a parting gift when Holm wrapped all his scenes on the film.

xD
