I really think this initial should be there as the author is listed as John R. Gribbin in all books source web pages and a second profile will appear the next time someone adds a book/edition.

However, all of his covers do not have an initial and there are 180 books under his name.

Below is the only instance of the initial, and it should not be there, per the cover and that the name is repeated, once without and once with the initial.
