Latoya's Library This has been my favorite book for years! When the movie came out I was shocked by how many people had never heard of it. It was my favorite book for a very long time even with Harry and every other book I read. But it has since been replaced. I highly advice to pick this up at your local book store it a good read.

Kyle Salder yes, you are the only one who read this before the movie came out. feel better now?

Susan A student recommended this to me in 2004 or so, and I remember really liking it at the time. I haven't read it since then, but I've recommended it to many students.

Cherie HIPSTER ALERT!!!!

Hannah yea you're the only one who read it between 1999 and 2012.

but really, almost all my friends read it in like 04 or 05 when we were just starting high school.

Rebecca Miller I read it ages ago after seeing it recommended in waterstones

Gracie Yes, you are literally the only person. Not even Stephen Chbosky himself read it before the film came out.

Ficie There are a bunch of reviews from 2007 and 2008 on this site, so clearly quite a few people read this before the film came out.
I cannot see how that matters though - if films helps people discover literature they might like, good for them.

Sorenconard " I was way into this book before anyone knew of it, now that others like it, I've moved on." that's how you sound. Not a good look.

like many others , I read this book before the movie back in 2002 or so. I try not to brag when a book I've read is popular enough a movie is made of it.

Emily Nope! Read it when I was 13, which was back in 2004. Pretty much all of my friends at the time were reading it back then. When the movie came out, some of my college friends had also read the book as teens, and some hadn't and read it before/after the movie. I was actually surprised when I found out some of my friends hadn't read it yet- it just seemed like everyone I knew was reading it back in middle school/early high school. I guess it was a thing that spread like wild fire in some schools and not in others. In general though, I think lots of people read it before the movie, especially since it was published back in '99.

Gino Alfonso I read the book when it first came out in '99 and had since been my favorite book of all time, I loved Stephens adaptation of his own novel, thought he was gipped at the oscars of 2013 for best director and adapted screenplay nominations great job for a first time director - thought he should have been nominated also for adapting Rent back in '06 (I think it was)

Alana I read this book in 2002, and I loved it so much that I kept it long enough to read it once more before returning it to the library. It's still one of the most beautiful novels I've ever read.

No and no

Megan I read this book in high school.

Scott I read it at least 10 years ago. I loved it, but don't really remember it well enough to compare it to the film.

Scott I'm not surprised it was made into a movie, as it was an extremely popular novel with a built-in audience, but it is perhaps surprising that they let the author direct it himself.

Sarai no there is more people who have read this you are not the only one.

Laura No. I would assume a large number of people read it before it was made into a movie. I read it almost ten years ago when I was in high school.

No real surprise that it was made into a movie since Chbosky has been in the film industry as a writer and producer for some time now. Both the book and the film are great.

Scott Laura Ashlee wrote: "Chbosky has been in the film industry as a writer and producer for some time now."

Ah, that I did not know.

Becca I was introduced to this title in 2002, and have probably read it 20+ times since :) I still have yet to see the film, as I tend to spend more time thinking of the inconsistencies between the movie and the book than I do enjoying the movie. I'm sure I will eventually give it a shot.

Gino Alfonso I read the book when it first came out in 99 and actually tried to option it as a film at one point back in 03/04 sometime but he said he was looking to do it himself back then, I think it was a great choice for the studios to let him direct it too being his directorial debut... 5 stars to both book and movie!!

Sorenconard For the people hesitant to watch the movie for fear it will ruin things: that is a legit concern for most book-to-movie conversions but let me tell you, you have very little to fear. Most movies don't have the author as the director. It was a great movie the was very true to the book

Naomi I always meant to read it when I was younger, but I never got around to it. When the movie came out, I decided to read the book before I saw it. This inevitably ruined the movie for me, but the book was great.
