Christian Schoon | 4 comments Well, Spooky1947, you're right; it's always a good idea to verify terms of something like this promotional giveaway (key word here being: promotional). Here's the website of the org. offering the "name a star" pkg:

http://www.nameastarlive.com/faq.asp#...

So, is this IAU sanctioned in any way? Nope. Stars are generally referred to by spatial coordinates or ancient designations; so, yeah, no surprise that ya can't actually buy/sell this sorta thing, and that's clearly spelled out in the FAQ. Naming a star w/ one of these orgs is a symbolic action to honor an individual etc. But hey, you get a suitable-for-framing certif & proof that you launched the name into space. That might well get you some relationship/gifting props if nothing else. And bottom line: it's free!

Christian Schoon | 4 comments yeah, I agree, spooky - telling your significant other that "Oh, by the way, see that point of light up there... well, I've got a little surprise for you..." Kinda tough to go wrong w/ a "gift" like that. :)
