Ioana Hayman (ioanahayman) | 7 comments Hi! I'd like to volunteer for discussion questions but I can't figure out how the "teams" work. Would someone kindly point me in the right direction or to a post explaining it? Thanks a bunch!

message 155: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
Hi Joana!

The teams are referring to Tower Teams which is a team challenge we currently have. You can read about it and sign up to be put on a team here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
We expect there is still another 5/6 weeks of the challenge to run.

You don't need to be on a team to write DQs, so feel free to volunteer! People are putting their team names as it gives their team points :)

Book of the month isn't challenge, it's buddy read (in case we are thinking different thing). :)
Anyway, for both (challenges and buddy reads) all you need to do to join is go to the thread and say I'm in or something like that.
In challenges, you'll be expected to post progress of your challenge (either by making new post or editing old one).
In buddy reads and BOMs all you need is read specific book you chose to read with others and discus it during reading. There are few types of discussions. BOMs mostly have few volunteers upfront that want to post questions from specific sections of the books for discussion. Others then discus book based on those questions.

And welcome to the group :)

Micah | 9 comments Regarding the books of the month questions. How do you get involved with the discussions? I see people volunteering to post questions, but where are the discussions listed to go over the questions? I'd love to join in.

Karsyn (imzadi) Micah wrote: "Regarding the books of the month questions. How do you get involved with the discussions? I see people volunteering to post questions, but where are the discussions listed to go over the questions?..."

If you see where people are volunteering, I'm assuming that it's for a BOM that hasn't started yet? Everything is done in the same thread. The BOM is announced with a date, then people volunteer to write up the Discussion Questions. Once the date arrives, in that same thread will be the Questions that are asked and people can answer and discuss the book.

As an example Micah, the BOM we just finished was
Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll

The links to each days discussion questions are in the original chapter breakdown message here and then people comment from there.
I hope that makes sense :)

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments I have a question about Tower Team goals... Will there be a Tower Teams V? (If yes, when?) Will the Goals be the same or different? I really enjoyed making notes of things (like aquamarines, "judgement," and "last straw") in the books I read. I'm wondering if I should keep making such notes now that I'm in the groove for them.

But if the goals are going to change. . . ???

Hi Jen
We generally run TT once a year and then have other shorter challenges for the rest of the year.
We started using the goals for Gladiator Games and then continued with TT. So although I don't think the current goals will change, we may add new ones over time :)

Laura, by the looks of your comments in the BOM for "All the Bright Places" you have just responded to another persons response, getting only the first line of the text or so. What you need to do is look for the actual questions. They will usually be all in Bold and be only the questions. At the beginning of the thread you will see what day the questions are posted on.

Copy & paste all the questions only, and then you can answer them in your own post. If you don't follow along from the start you'll have to look for the questions. In that book's case, the first set of questions can be found in post number 44 on Feb 11th. Just copy/paste Karen's full post in your own post and answer the question.

You can also just talk about the book without answering the questions.

Hope this helps.

Allecyn | 82 comments Quick question. I am fairly new to the group and haven't finished any of the challenges I am involved in yet. So, when I do finish one, should I create a new post to say I completed it or just make a note in my original challenge post that it's completed?? I know at least my first few I complete I will want to show off, lol!!

I'm not a mod, so don't take what I do as gospel, but I usually do both. I'll update my post to say "complete!" AND create a new, current, post to say that I reached my goal, with a link to my first post included. ;-)

One other question, I am trying to get myself set up for some challenges, wanna have a few going together, but I am having trouble with finding the newer challenges with more current activity. I know I can see the list with the most current updates, but I am finding that most of them are challenges that were started a few years ago and someone might of just updated them. I am wanting to look at the most currently started challenges so there will be lots of current activity. Is there a way to see chronologically which challenges were started the most recently?

:) all good

Unfortunately Goodreads isn't very sophisticated and, to my knowledge, there isn't a way to sort by date created. You could look back at our newsletters to see what was advertised over the last few months and that will give you the ones newly created and also seasonal challenges that have been reactivated

message 180: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Mmmmm, no easy way Allecyn. We use a lot of the older challenges still, since they are poplar. The Novel Roleplaying game is probably the biggest thing that gets updated the most right now. It's just really a matter of finding what interests you.

I went through and pulled some new ones for you. Here's a few for you to take a gander at ~

Decades Challenge started 12/30/15
Author Alphabet 2016 created 12/30/15
GoodReads Choice Awards 2015 created 12/30/15
Planning vs Achieving created 12/31/15
2016 New Release Challenge created 1/1/16
Hunger Games, Escape the Capital created 1/31/16
Carnival Around the World created 2/1/16
All About You, Part 4 created 2/8/16
American Ninja Warrior created 2/13/16 (quiet, but if you are a fan you might like it)

You should check out the ongoing Novel Role-playing game here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...!

It's so much fun, and you will find everyone playing very helpful in the Tavern. If you have any questions, everyone is happy to help. The leaders of the challenge have done a wonderful job making the coolest reading challenge on goodreads IMO.

Abigail (ammcginley) I'm curious, before I get started with challenges. How do you feel about graphic novels and manga and the like? A lot of people don't consider them books but I wanted to know as a group, do things like that count?

message 185: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Abbey wrote: "I'm curious, before I get started with challenges. How do you feel about graphic novels and manga and the like?"

With the individual challenges that you'll do here, it's likely that many/most would accept graphic novels / manga because those challenges are about you and what it is that you want to read. There may be the challenge here and there that prohibit them but for the most part you will be able to use them for individual challenges unless otherwise stated.

Where they typically aren't allowed are in the bigger team challenges where we are usually counting page count. There isn't any of our main/big team challenges going on right now and the Around the World challenge doesn't say you can't use them.

Just check the first few posts of the challenge(s) you are looking at doing. It will specify if any books can't be used for that particular challenge.

Hope that helps!

Abigail (ammcginley) Thank you. That definitely helps.

However I am a little lost on where to start when it comes to challenges and things like the buddy read. I have read all the welcome threads but they have overwhelmed me. Can anyone give me a simple idea of where to start? Usually once I do something I can catch on pretty quick. Thanks!

Check out a few challenges - the monthly or seasonal ones are good to start with, and sign up for a couple that interest you. Then just start reading and keeping track of what fits. (I keep a separate file of the challenges I'm in with links so they're easy to find. But I'm in quite a few.)

Once you've done that keep an eye out for a Buddy Read that you'd like to try, and read the monthly newsletter for new challenges.

Welcome to the group!

There's none scheduled yet. They are done about once a year, so it might be a while until Tower Teams comes around again.

But there's a lot of other stuff going on, including the Leprechaun Take Over right now through the end of the month, and the Leprechaun Read-a-Thon going on until the 26th. There will be another team challenge before the next Tower Teams too, so lots for you to join in.

Hope you'll come check it all out. I'm sure you'll like a lot of stuff just as much as you'll like Tower Teams, when it returns. :)

On the top right of the comment box is a link that says (some html is ok), click on that. Then copy the html provided for "Link" into your comment. Put in the link of the post you want to link back to and voila :)
